Giving out his Kudos of the day to shaq for being a good role model and learning his law enforcement craft, if he wants to run for Sheriff one day.

Mike points out to the kids (because we all know tons of kids listen to his show), but then says 'specifically the black kids' should look at him as a role model.

can only keep that racism under wraps so long Mikey! Always going to creep out.

someone feel free to try and tape his "SPIN" as to what he meant by that.

Correct. Normally a comment like that would offend me, but I sincerely get the feeling that Mike sometimes doesn't know any better. He's like a kid in that aspect.

If he believes it is important to have at least some role models who match your gender/race/ethnicity than I completely understand his point. Shaq would be a good role model "especially to the black kids" with that world view. He would not be alone in that view either nor would he necessarily be incorrect.

I don't agree Dolphin. If my son has a dream of being a great basketball player does he necessarily have to be the next Allen Iverson? Why can't my son strive to be the next Steve Nash? What's the significance of race here? Shouldn't a kid just try to be the best at whatever he or she eventually does? I don't agree with young people placing limitations on what they perceive as a role model.

Growing up, I never wanted to be like the most successful Black people in the world. I wanted to be like the most successful people period. If they were Black, great. If not, it still didn't matter to me. The sky should be the limit regardless. Unfortunately, some Black kids grow up thinking that they can't be successful unless they see specific examples of Black success around them. Where I grew up, I didn't see a lot of success around me but I didn't need to. I never doubted my own abilities.

KC,
You mean you want your kid to be a tough, smart field general who makes his team better and not a me-first, shot happy, practice skipping, tattoed thug???
regards
pappy

KC,

I think you missed the wink.
I was trying to play up the stereotypes just a bit.

Yes nash is all the things I said, but Sue Bird plays tougher defense.
As for AI, he may be all that, but he's also a tough SOB.
The beating he takes at that size is amazing.

My bad Mustang. I think I did miss the wink. You're right, about Iverson being a tough little bastard though.

Have you noticed though that whenever a white kid is compared to a great player it's usually another white player? Why can't a white kid come out of college as the next Isaiah Thomas or a black kid as the next Larry Bird? I never understood that.

I agree with that. Steve Nash is always compared to Bob Cousy. I think he's exactly the player that Isiah was but nobody makes that comparrison because it seems you can't compare white players to black players or vice versa.

Chuck Klosterman wrote an interesting article on that for ESPN.
Is Morrison the next Bird

Disagree all you want. There is a well thought out belief by some that a role model of a similar demographic is particularly effective. It is especially important in minority or traditionally depressed groups. I have no idea whether this is true. I do know that it is in man's nature to love what he knows and fear what is different, so that a role model who is like me should be easier to accept.

You know a player that just retired was the closest thing to Bird but nobody ever made that comparrison through the years because of the black/white taboo. Reggie Miller was a Larry Bird type. Both couldn't defend, neither could jump. They'd just run around screens and hit big shots. Although Bird was probrally a better passer then Miller.

Bird struck me more as the immoble point guard type, but Reggie had ZERO ball-handling skills. Also, I'd probably say Bird was a slightly better defender than Reggie. Other than that, I'd say that's a pretty solid comparison.

I respect your opinion Dolphin. I know there are many people who share your viewpoint. I'll partially agree that human nature tends to cling to the familiar. I just plan on teaching my son to expand outside of the familiar.

Bird didn't have great ball handling skills either. He would dribble with his palms not his finger tips like an awkard 8th grader. He made most of his great passes from stand still positions at the top of the key extended or in the post.

Reggie could shoot like Bird & they were both tall, but that where the similarities end.

Bird averaged 10 rebound per game, Reggie 3
Bird averaged 6.3 assists, Reggie 3.
Bird was a physical defender, Reggie couldn't defend his sister.
Bird could create his own shot, reggie needed 3 screens.

Nowitzki is the closest player to Bird in terms of skills, but he is much more athletic than Larry ever was.

This probably is true

BUT DON'T TRY AND SELL ME THE CRAP THAT MIKE NORTH IS THINKING IN UNISON WITH ANYTHING WELL THOUGHT

True I did not hear his comment, but I have heard comments over the years that are HUGE Stereotypes by him when he directs the comments to BLACKS.

6'7" genes don't run wild in the Cairo family, I take it.

No way Coach. I'm 6'0" and my fiance is about 5'4". Both my parents are short (pop is 5'6" and my mother is 5'1") and my fiance's parents are about the same. I'd say that the odds of my son being a point guard are pretty strong. :(

I agree that the NBA is starting to trend bigger. I think the pure point guard is starting to get phased out because teams are looking for 6'7" and 6'8" players who have point guard quickness and ball handling.

How many white kids said, " I want to be like J.Paxson or W.Purdue?"

Only time I tried to be Pax was when I was shooting my three pointer. "Paxson for three... ITS GOOD!!!" or in my case, "oh so close!"

Every white, black, spanish, chinese, purple, blue, green kid in America wanted to be Jordan or Magic. Except those southern rednecks who listened to Lynard Skynard and loved L.Bird.

Jordan Vs Bird for Nintendo was fixed. No way Bird can guard Jordan 1one1.

Southern rednecks are not exactly wild about the N.B.A.

Even the Bausston kids wanted to "be like mike". Converse - birds or Nike - Air Jordan's? Image is everything!
