Was wondering if anyone else is, pretty consistently, shocked by the timing of days off at 670?

Tune in to the station this am, and hear the two Steves filling in for BOTH Mully and Hanley. As Rosenbloom kept saying, it's "hockey week" and the guys are off.

I really wish I had a yellow pad with all of the other times I've been stunned at a host being off - not that they GET vacation time and use it (Jim Rome), but the timing of large sporting events and their time off.

I also wonder if anyone is really running the ship over there, as the random days off taken seem to have no rules to them. I've complained about how meatpants has missed several of "his" weekend baseball shows already - because of cover band gigs the night before, playing a prom, going to the Hawks game?

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has noticed this - as a long time observer I simply can't recall a time where I've tuned in to the station after a big event(s) and SO OFTEN have heard one or both of the primary hosts NOT be there. Like or hate certain shows, I really think radio is a business ALL ABOUT consistency - and I am just stunned at how often "the" guys aren't there for the listener after a large sporting/city event.

It continually amazes me how people are so damn concerned with radio show hosts using their vacation days. If the SCORE gives them the time off then they are free to take them. I bet the majority of guys on this board use up all their vacation days each year. Why should these guys not be given the same opportunity?

I havent listened much lately. I have no issues with vacation but I have found certain days off to be curious.

I mean there are days at my job I wouldnt even ask to have off because of things going on that day. But this isnt just The Score. ESPN did this too with fill ins after/during HUGE events. Seems weird.

On the other hand Prom is a once in a lifetime evening for a man

RFDC, this seemed like a complaint about when they are taking vacation, not that they take vacation.

I would agree that anyone upset with them taking the days off they are due is being stupid, but I would say questioning the timing is fair game.

Either way it really does not matter. If the company gives them the time off, then who cares when it is? Maybe they have something important in their family going on this week or maybe they just wanna get out of town and this was the only time they could work it out with their spouses schedule? A lot of times I would bet these things are scheduled pretty far in advance without anyone knowing what would be going on during that particular week in sports.

Like RPB said, there are times at nearly any job that you just don't take off.

If they can still get the time off, good for them. I just think it's fair to question it.

So looking at the whole year in advance, the week after memorial day is out because the Stanley Cup finals is going on?

What other weeks are out?

No one better take off at the end of October/first of November just in case the Cubs or WS are in the World Series.

Yeah, that's right. If the Cubs are in the World Series (Go ahead make your plans. It's not gonna happen.), you need to cancel that vacation. Their job is talking sports and that would be a pretty important event. They're not getting paid so management can put Larry and Rozner on at a critical time.

But you're right about one thing, RFDC. It really doesn't matter. When I hear Rosenbloom's smarmy voice, I simply PTFB.

So taking away the time for the four major sports championships, there are still at least 46 weeks.

Seems like plenty of time for people to take their vacation.

I don't care how much time these guys get vacation time, but I'm also pretty sure that none of the hosts would be on vacation had the Sox or Cubs been in the playoffs.

I bet the SCORE guys take time off to sit around all day and play video games. Damn losers are going to be dead by the time they are 35.

Of course you have the usual suspects, who spend all day on this board talking about every single tiny thing in sports media in Chicago, rushing in to bash anyone who "really cares about hosts getting/taking vacation time". I thought I made it clear that I don't care how much/little time they get, the question I was posing was indeed the TIMING of a lot of it.

While it's not local, didn't the "powerhouse" midday show of the station let one of it's hosts check out of NCCA March Madness talk? The morning show is being populated by fill-ins after the second home victory of the Stanley Cup Finals. The station's "staple" baseball show struggles to get both hosts in the studio on Sunday mornings. They promote the hell out of remote broadcasts where they constantly ask the audience to come out and party with the boys, where (quite a bit of the time) one of the boys can't be bothered to actually show up.

I may be doing some fantastic revisionist history here, but I don't recall this many absences "back in the day" on the station. It just seems like the inmates are running the asylum, to me. Maybe I'm wrong and the manager rules with an iron fist, but I find it incredibly laughable that the "co-host" of one of the station's most pimped shows has missed shows because of his "real job?" of playing in a cover band.

Did North do a lot of remotes and/or pre-post BIG game shows with a fill-in? Where Jigs was too busy or tired? Did Fred work with a fill-in because Murph was too exhausted from trimming his beard? Did Tom Shaer have to go it alone because Memolo was hungover?

Again, my main take is that radio serves as a cozy, comfy blanket for a lot of people - so it's just bizarre to me how many times I turn on the station to hear "I'm filling in for..." or "he's not here today...." Consistency doesn't seem to be a big deal, I guess.

Who's the other Steve besides Rosenbloom?

The timing isn't that big a deal to me since I view Hockey as barely a major sport. Plus, if you are a big hockey guy, wouldn't you rather have Rosenbloom? I found it quite convenient to PTF(Snooze)B waking up to Rosenbloom since I knew it'd be Blackhard hawkey time.

You must be referring to Steve Konroyd. The former Blackhawk player turned CSN analyst sat in this morning with the Trib's columnist and Brian "The Whipping Boy" Paruch's Saturday morning partner on 670 The SCORE & 670thescore.com.

So now I hear, transition today, that meatpants couldn't even be bothered to phone it in (from the studio) for "his" show today. I guess McNeil logged some solo flight miles, with Edzo chipping in for the first half of the show.

Again, I realize that this is HOCKEY - but I would argue that the stellar TV numbers indicate that this isn't as meaningless as a Rush Championship.

So now Terry Boers is out for a week. The "co-host" of the midday show on Chicago's Most Listened To Sports Station shows up when it doesn't conflict with his singing gigs. BOTH hosts of the morning show were not there the morning after (what could have been at the time) the last home game before the city won it's first Cup in generations.

What makes all of this even worse is the go-to guy that they use to fill in, Larry Holmes. Through this board I have learned that the program director was actually Larry's agent, and that explains more than just a couple of things about this whole situation.

It's just strange to me - and no, I'm not Spada. I supposedly won a hat from the guy, and have yet to see it - if I were actually him I would have a lot more hats than I currently do (and would have far less wear and tear on my SHIFT key.

I would have to guess that the Tributosaurus gigs were written into Spiegs contract since he's been doing them since 2002.

these guys schedule vacation and buy plane tickets just like the rest of us do. If you happen to have a trip booked to Aruba 5 months before the Hawks are in the Cup...you'd still go to Aruba. I don't care what your job is.

As far as fill-ins, I'm sure we all have our favorites.

This doesn't seem like people are that pissed with guys taking vacation as that is something generally everyone does, but more so with guy(s) not being able to sing one night and work the next day and with having to hear loho every time someone is off.
