Tom Thibodeau = the white Mike Brown? i.e., a career assistant defensive guru.

If there was any chance of landing Phil, this would not happen. I do not think this is a small time hire.

I meant getting Lebron not phil. I think the bulls are very much in play unless phil goes to one of those places and then I think its a lock that lebron goes with him.

He is represented by the same agency as Bosh and LeBron. I'm guessing the Bulls already know if Bosh or LeBron like him. Hell he has devised a scheme to shut down LeBron the last 2 times they met in the playoffs. If LeBron shows up for anyone of the first 4 games in 2008 Cleveland wins that series. Why wouldn't LeBron want to play for a coach like that if he really wants to win?

Well, the concern is maybe that Thibodeau is (and they have very similar career trajectories prior to becoming head coaches, i.e., defensive minded career assistant coaches)

When it's crunch time and it's the job of the head coach to push his team to get every last ounce of effort out of them, is a defensive-minded career assistant (like a Mike Brown or, heh, a Lovie Smith--tho "extra effort" and motivational skills matter more in the NBA than the NFL, where it's mostly about X's and O's); is a never-played-in-the-NBA Al Bundy the right guy to motivate a team of multi-millionaire NBA players in the Finals vs a Riley or a Jackson or even a Doc Rivers?

I once heard a great story about Game 6 of the 2006 Finals, when Miami was trying to clinch the title in Dallas, from someone who has seen the unedited footage of Miami's huddles during the second-half timeouts. Pat Riley basically stopped coaching. Threw out his X's and O's. Quit giving advice. Stopped drawing up plays.

So what did he do? He screamed at his guys like a boxing trainer. You're tougher than them! YOU'RE TOUGHER THAN THEM! Don't let up! They are ready to quit! They are ready to fold! Keep attacking them! Keep getting to the rim! Keep knocking their asses down! No layups! No dunks! Stay together! YOU ARE TOUGHER THAN THEM! YOU ARE TOUGHER THAN THEM! That's what he did for the entire second half. Eventually, his players believed him.

Come to think of it, Al Bundy could probably pull that off. At least the real-not-a-real-person Al Bundy might be able to. Not sure about Thibodeau.

While you chew on that for a moment, I'm not at all surprised that Tom Thibodeau will soon be named the new head coach of the Chicago Bulls. While "GarPax", as 670 The SCORE's Dan Bernstein refers to Executive V.P. John Paxson & General Manager Gar Forman, would've liked a head coach WITH EXPERIENCE, it wasn't necessarily a requirement for the Bulls' job. That being said, the Bulls also wanted their head coach to be defensive-oriented, and Thibodeau knows that. The veteran, unemployed head coaches around the NBA that were available didn't necessarily have reputations of defense and would've cost Uncle Jerry a lot more money. Terms of Thibodeau's deal weren't disclosed, but considering Celtics' head coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers thought very highly of him, I think the Bulls got the guy they wanted all along and at Uncle Jerry's price.

This is great news, IMO - they got the guy that they wanted, and the one that I was hoping for. Now on to the full court press to get Bosh...
