How does that compare with other coaches? With VDN?

It's first time head coach money. I'm sure he doesn't really care. If things work out the way he expects them to he will be signing a new deal in no time.

Why?

Why is it a bad picture, or why is he going to be a great head coach? By the way, the Mr. Reason looking Mr. Reason explained some of this to Shark already.

I once heard a great story about Game 6 of the 2006 Finals, when Miami was trying to clinch the title in Dallas, from someone who has seen the unedited footage of Miami's huddles during the second-half timeouts. Pat Riley basically stopped coaching. Threw out his X's and O's. Quit giving advice. Stopped drawing up plays.

So what did he do? He screamed at his guys like a boxing trainer. You're tougher than them! YOU'RE TOUGHER THAN THEM! Don't let up! They are ready to quit! They are ready to fold! Keep attacking them! Keep getting to the rim! Keep knocking their asses down! No layups! No dunks! Stay together! YOU ARE TOUGHER THAN THEM! YOU ARE TOUGHER THAN THEM! That's what he did for the entire second half. Eventually, his players believed him.

Er, a coaching philosophy that consists of belching platitudes about "toughness" instead of drawing plays is why we just fired the last guy.

So the Bulls hired a guy who has never been a head coach in the NBA. Unreal.

Phil Jackson had not been a head coach in the NBA when the Bulls hired him. I am IN NO WAY SAYING Al Bundy Jr will be Phil Jackson. But I do believe he will be a great head coach in the NBA, and this hire will not hurt the chances of getting LeBron.

I thought after the Vinnie experiment that the Bulls would hire a guy with head coaching experience.

If they did this with any other guy without head coaching experience, I would agree. He has a ton of respect in the league. Again, the big picture is getting LeBron. I do not see this hire as an issue for him.

There was really no coach out there outside of Phil who has had head coaching experience who I was excited about.

Van Gundy? Okay coach, but I doubt he will leave his cushy TV gig.
Doug? Been there, done that, don't want it again.

The difference between Del Negro and Thibodeau is that Vinnie had never even been on a bench during the game since he retired.

Maybe he'll suck, maybe he'll be great. Who knows.

All I know is that he was the top assistant out there and the Bulls got him.

Here I go.Why didn't they hire this guy before VDN?I don't even remember his name being bantered about. An assistant coach for 16 years what's the reason for this???? It seems he's the wise guy choice ala Wannie.Let us hope he is a defensive guru to see if he can get this group to defend LeBron when he resigns with the Cavs

Anyone that cannot understand the difference in Vinny and Thibodeau is an idiot. Oh wait, you are talking about JohnKirk. Case closed.

I think Thibodeau should do okay. I'm not too bent out of shape over him not having head coaching experience because I knew GarPax was full of shit regarding that prerequisite anyway. I'd rather have Thibodeau coach this team than freaking Jeff Van Gundy. And hey, maybe he'll be a step toward bringing in LeBron. Or maybe he'll be Mike Brown Redux (though no coach can ever look as eminently and visibly overwhelmed as Mike Brown did).

You know who else never had NBA head coaching experience? Every guy ever hired to be an NBA head coach.

Now is there a difference between hiring a guy with absolutely no NBA head or assistant coaching experience whatsoever and hiring a 18 year NBA top assistant?

I'd say anyone with half a brain would answer yes.

Do you call people names in person who you disagree with? I'll never understand people who follow others around on a message board for the purpose of acting like a dick towards them. You can choose to conduct yourself however you like though. I'll choose the high road.
Obviously the difference is that Thibodeau at least has been a Defensive coach for a good franchise while Vinnie never coached. Still, I thought the Bulls were gonna set the bar a little bit higher & take a look at Van Gundy or Avery Johnson. You know what the book on Thibodeau is? He's a a hard ass with lousy people skills.
Dat's what da Bulls need my friend, a guy to kick da players in da ass!

Kirk, you choose the high road when it is convenient for you. You call as many names on here as anyone else, oh wait it is alright because they are on the radio. I keep forgetting.

Odds of Skiles returning - 35,000,000 - 1
Odds of Boylan staying: 500 - 1 but improving
Odds of Paxson fucking up the permanent appointment: 2 - 1

There must have been a shitload of teams beating down del Negro's door  . I can't believe Paxson wouldn't wait a week to interview some assistants from the Lakers and Celtics. Thibodeaux would have been an interesting choice.

Good hire, a couple years too late, but better than never. IMO he was the best choice available.

There is a huge difference between criticizing someone who is in the public eye, & calling someone names with whom you are engaged with in a discussion or debate. Public figures are fair game. It is another thing for two people who are interacting to call each other names. I expect that from children but not adults. Your childish & immature comments directed towards me say a lot more about you than they do me.

I thought Avery Johnson publicly lobbied for the Bulls' job on their flagship station 2 years ago and I didn't think they were going to give him the time of day...

He has no idea. He's admitted he never watches the NBA, yet feels compelled to contribute with gems like the one you quoted. JVG = maybe. Avery = horrible coach and everyone who follows the league knows it.

It appears Tealander reads WWN

think of football assistants who were all the rage -- men like Charlie Weis, Dave Wannstedt and Lovie Smith -- who were made head men and didn't live up to the hype.

Word is Thibodeau is a players' coach and a decent guy and workaholic
