The guys on MLB network are pounding the Cubs for drafting a guy at 16, that wasn't ranked in the top 200.

Doesn't this happen every year?

Lord almighty. No one ever heard of this guy. Hayden Simpson. Remember that name.
So he wasn't projected to go in the top 200. So why the hell use a first round pick on him? Why use a 5th round pick on him?
Tim Wilken is supposed to know what he's doing but this move... just freaky weird.

I thought only Jerry Angelo reached that far on draft picks.

He's the scouting report on our 16th pick:

I haven't heard anyone mention Simposon as a potential first-rounder this entire spring -- one club I know had him in the 4th-5th rounds -- and I can't imagine he wouldn't have made it to day two had the Cubs not taken him. He's 90-92 with a decent curve and average or better command and control.

Either this is a gigantic reach or there are more serious budget restrictions on this team than any of us are aware of

who cares? first round / high picks flop all the time....and 37th round / low draft picks become studs often. It is a crap shoot. Wilken has done an excellent job so far, and I will just sit back and see how it all pans out.

But why pick a guy in the 1st when you can definitely get him in the 3rd, and probably in the 4th? Even if you really like him, there are better prospects to go for, then grab 'your guy' a bit early, not ridiculously so.

Per Wilkens, 2 other teams had planned to draft this guy before the Cubs 2nd round pick. Given his success, I stand behind Wilkens but one does have to wonder if budget constraints played a role here.

The cubs next pick is at #63....coming up by the way....and I read a quote where Wilken said he had confirmation that two other GM's said they would have picked this guy before that pick. What else is he going to say right? Either way...if you believe in the guy and that is who you want...then you have to take him. I heard him compared to Lincicom (sp?) from the Giants...w/ a fastball at 97. You never know.
