Every day that Fontenot is not playing 3rd base is a minor victory at McCracken Manor

What is Lou thinking with this lineup? I mean Colvin leading off?God , this is trying my new found happy world. Two months till first football preseason games.

Dan, your analysis of Lou's lineups always interest me. What makes this one a better lineup? Colvin leading off?

Better option that Theriot at this point if he's not going to play Fukudome against a lefty

Well, there's actually a few things I like about this lineup. Theriot not leading off. Soto out of the 7/8 hole. Colvin actually starting and no Fontenot at 3rd.

Does anyone know what type of free agent Lee, Lilly, etc. will be? The reason I ask, is the draft pick compensation. I can't find anything on the Interweb about what the Cubs would get for waiting until the end of the season, and allowing them to leave via free agency.

I think they wait until the end of the year and then assign a class a or b tag to the free agents based on their ranking for their position. The top 20 percent at their position get an A classification, the next 21 to 40 percent get type B and after 40 you are not good enough to warrant compensation to your former team.

Thanks Neck. As baseball changes, the idea of a "fire sale" does not look as great. It is also difficult to get clarification on some of the finer points of CBA's and Salary Caps (obviously not for baseball).

Conventional wisdom would say get some prospects for Lee and Lilly now while you can. Maybe even eat the last year of Fuke's deal at $13M although I doubt it. But that would mean Hendry admitting defeat and you know he won't do that.

Conventional wisdom is a great way to phrase it. The Cubs aren't going to get a newly roided up Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson these days. Times have changed. I'm not saying the best route could be trade deadline deals. However, there may be the draft pick option, which could be better these days. Especially with Tim Wilken.

I don't see the cubs having any type a free agents, just type b so they would only get a sandwich pick between the first and second rd for them. I just wish the angels would jump on d lee because you know when you get an angel prospect they are well versed in the fundamentals of baseball.

Sandwich picks can be major league starters/stars within 1-3 years now. Again, I'm not saying this is the only way to go. I'm just trying to see if this could make as much sense.

Also, who do the Cubs want from the Angels farm system?

Freddy Sandoval is a 3rd basemen that is in AAA or at least he was until he went on the minor league 7 day DL. He is having a down year, but usually hits around 300, good defense, good fundamental hitting and has good power. Mark Trumbo is a power hitting 1b who is also in AAA and doing quite well from the look of things.

Trumbo, in an entire season at AA, had as many home runs in a half season at AAA. You really don't want many prospects that get to AAA.

12-0 Wtf happened today?

A loss like that with Lilly on the mound is a season breaker. Not that the season wasnt already over, but where there was once bleak hope, there is nothing but an empty void like the bottom of Lou's flask.

Im glad Ive backed off my Cubs fandom since the turdbomb in the '08 playoffs. It hurts less this way. These players dont want to play for a washed up alcoholic. They prolly dont wanna take shit from Ryno next year either. Not that Sandberg is a lock, but I could really see Ricketts going that route in the future.

He is a high school guy though and the angels rarely if ever let someone move up without spending time in AAA. The weird thing is that AA is a huge huge pitchers park and their AAA division has some of the shortest porches in all of baseball.

Either Joe Saunders really sucks or the day off for half the lineup actually did something...

the angels suck. how can you lose 9 to 1. the cubs would lose 12 to 0 because theyre better losers then the losers.

Saunders sucks. Phil Rogers had a piece on his numbers today, it's real ugly. Plus, their SS is bad. This guy made Theriot look good.
