The father of Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal died early today in the Dominican Republic, three weeks after being kicked in the chest by a horse, ESPNdeportes.com reports.

Silvino Furcal suffered serious internal damages when a horse that was being saddled kicked him. The Dodgers placed Furcal on the bereavement/family emergency list Thursday and he returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his dad.
