The ESPN link said they met recently but there is a discrepancy about where they met.

I don't understand all the fuss about this 'summit'. Even if they don't meet in person, we'd all be dumb to think all these FA's haven't been in contact with each other through text/email/agents etc.

Exactly. It's not like these guys don't have each others' phone numbers and can't call/text each other. C'mon.

suspense is fine but seemingly every hour there are conflicting reports. So and so was seen here, these 3 are having a "summit", these guys are definitely going here according to an unnamed league source. Fucking none of it is true. It's all so convoluted now it's beyond ridiculous

All this talk about LeBron James and where he will go is fascinating. At its core, do you know what the speculation is? Handicapping. From my Magazine buddies Ric Bucher and Chris Broussard to the guy I see at my local swimming pool who can't stop talking to me about it. Everyone is doing the same thing professional bettors do when they make their picks: reading everything possible, talking to experts, running scenarios. In other words, they're gathering information. They're handicapping.

The LeBron-watching world has been in a particular tizzy this week, thanks to that New York Times article that quoted a league exec saying King James to Chicago was a done deal. The market in the offshore sports books for where LeBron will go then became so volatile, with different teams leading the way seemingly every minute, that two of the most popular Island bookmakers, sportsbook.com and Bodog, just stopped taking bets on the sweepstakes completely. Bodog bookmaker Richard Gardner emailed me a statement that read, in part, "It is not worth the risk as a book manager to throw something like this up ... Calculating odds on something like this is like trying to run live odds on the 100M dash at the Olympic games and is definitely one of the toughest things I have had to deal with in my years in bookmaking."

Before any of this happened I had been looking for ways to accurately predict LeBron's final destination. After all, if this is nothing more than handicapping, there should be a wise guy system for it, because no one is better at reading tea leaves than sharps. So, I decided to construct an algorithm using bettor's logic and math.

Now, how do I do that?

The first call I made was to Jeff Ma. You may recognize the name. He's the MIT card-counting genius who was the inspiration for the bestselling book "Bringing Down the House." And that book was the inspiration for the movie about Ma and his buddies called "21." Ma moved on to become a fantasy sports/Internet entrepreneur, but he still knows a thing or two about making smart bets. He has a book coming out next week called "The House Advantage: Playing the Odds to Win Big in Business" that pulls back the curtain on a lot of those secrets (more on how those apply to sports betting next week).

I told Ma I wanted to build an algorithm that would tell me where LeBron was going. "First," he said to me, "You need to lay out the pros of each situation and assign value to them. Salary, cost of living, endorsement value. Ultimately you take it one step further: What place does he go to maximize the amount of championships he can win? A good place for next year or a team with young guys that can win three titles in the next six years. This is where you have gamblers figure out who has best chance of winning a championship."

So that's what I did. I polled gamblers, NBA experts here at ESPN and scoured the Internet for future odds. What I got was a broad swath of opinions -- from people who base their decisions solely on numbers to people who base them on talking to scouts, coaches, GMs and players -- about which teams in the LeBron sweepstakes are best positioned to win. Not just next year, but for the next five years.

Then I went to Kiplingers.com and figured out which of these potential LeBron homes -- Chicago, L.A., New York, New Jersey, Brooklyn, Miami, Cleveland -- has the lowest cost of living. Plus I did some skimming of experts to decide which town offers the best platform for worldwide marketing opportunities.

With those bits of information as my anchors, I developed two categories for building the LeBron algorithm. One I called "Legacy." This had three sub-categories, listed below, along with my info-based interpretation of LeBron's best options:

LEGACY

(A) Long term winning -- LeBron doesn't want just one title, he wants to be an all-time great, which requires multiple championships. The teams courting him best set up to win over the next six years are:

1. Chicago Bulls
2. New Jersey Nets
3. Miami Heat
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
5. New York Knicks
6. Los Angeles Clippers

(B) Short term winning -- Winning it all next year will solidify his status as the game's best current player. It will make him and the guys who signed him look like strategic geniuses for putting themselves in the position they did.

1. Miami Heat
2. Chicago Bulls
3. Los Angeles Clippers
4. Cleveland Cavaliers
5. New Jersey Nets
6. New York Knicks

(C) City Relationship -- Where would he be most beloved if he were to bring that town a title?

1. New York
2. Brooklyn/New Jersey
3. Cleveland
4. Chicago
5. Miami
6. Los Angeles

The other was called "Money." It had three sub-categories, too.

MONEY

(A) Total contract value

1. Cleveland can offer the most, $125.5M over six years.
2. Miami can offer the same five-year, $96.1M deal as all the other teams. But with no state income tax, it has the edge.
3. Everyone else.

(B) Marketing potential

1. New York/New Jersey/Brooklyn (best opportunities)
2. Los Angeles
3. Chicago
4. Miami
5. Cleveland (worst opportunities)

(C) Cost of living

1. Cleveland (cheapest)
2. Chicago
3. Miami
4. Los Angeles
5. New York/New Jersey/Brooklyn (most expensive)

Now, I had to build the formula.

For that I called Mike Orkin, who has a Ph.D. in Stats from Cal-Berkley. He is the Professor of Statistics Emeritus at Cal-State East Bay and runs the Business, Math and Sciences depo at Laney College in Oakland. He's also written a couple of books about the relationship between math and gambling. I sent him an email with the details above and he sent me back an excel spreadsheet with all of the info broken down into neat categories. He told me to fill in "importance values" from a scale of 1-10 for each sub-category (long-term winning, short-term winning, city relationship, total contract value, marketing potential and cost of living). And then he wanted me to rank each piece of data (the teams) according to what I thought LeBron's best options were, based on my handicapping.

I know it's confusing. Here's a sample of what it looks like:

Legacy (Category)

Long-Term (Sub-category, importance to LeBron ranked 1-10): 9
Short-Term (Sub-category, importance to LeBron ranked 1-10): 7
City Relationship (Sub-category, importance to LeBron ranked 1-10): 3

New York: 9
Cleveland: 9
Brooklyn/New Jersey: 8
Chicago: 7
Miami: 6
Los Angeles: 5

Once all the sub-categories and teams were given a value, the spreadsheet assigned the franchises a point value. Whoever has the most points is where LeBron will/should go. Obviously, I know my system has some flaws. Most important of which are the assumptions I am making. But this, my friends, is part of handicapping, too. Wise guys are constantly trying to glean insight into a coach's plans or a player's mindset from what they read. And that's what I did with LeBron. My assumption is that the two things that matter most to him are establishing a long-term legacy of success and becoming a billionaire. Both of these goals can be accomplished by winning as many titles as possible in the next decade.

According to my math, the winner of the LeBron sweepstakes should be ... the Bulls. Combining their point totals from the Legacy category and Money category, they beat out the Heat by 18 points. Next up were the Knicks, then Nets, Cavs and Clips.

No one can say for sure where LeBron will end up. But if he cares about winning and money, it's hard to bet against Chicago. (But I wouldn't ignore Miami, either.)

I am definitely developing a case of LeBron-lash. Luckily I will be out
living in a tent with no TV Thursday through Monday. Maybe things
will become clearer by the time I come back to civilization.

Well, it's been a few hours of no "news" in this story :eye:

http://web.sny.tv/news/article.jsp?ymd= ... 20&vkey=18

Source: Knicks eye Johnson, not James

Effect on team chemistry could be a consideration

The Knicks are targeting Joe Johnson as their No. 1 free agent choice and believe he's a better fit for the team than LeBron James, according to an NBA source with knowledge of the team's plans.

"Yes, we think he's a better player," the source said of Johnson. "He makes other people better. With LeBron's people running the locker room that hurts the organization."

The source also mentioned concerns about James' entourage taking over the franchise.

"I don't care what most people think," the source said. "I'm not saying that LeBron is not a good player, but other stuff comes with it. LeBron's friends want jobs. You're gonna lose running your organization. As time goes on you got to hire this guy, you got to hire that guy."

Led by president Donnie Walsh and head coach Mike D'Antoni, the Knicks are scheduled to meet with Johnson on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Free agents cannot officially meet with teams until midnight ET on Thursday, or 9 p.m. on the West Coast.

Johnson played for D'Antoni in 2004 and '05 with the Suns. He was then shipped to Atlanta for Boris Diaw and two first-round picks.

He averaged 21.3 points, 4.9 assists and 4.6 rebounds last season in Atlanta.

The Hawks can offer him a six-year deal worth $125 million, and the Knicks can offer five years and $96 million.

After meeting with Johnson, the Knicks will meet with Amar'e Stoudemire in Los Angeles on Wednesday before going to meet with James in the Akron, Ohio, area.

The source said the team's No. 1 option would be to land Johnson and Stoudemire.

"Yeah, we'll have room next year to get somebody next year," the source said, referring to the 2011 free agency class that includes Carmelo Anthony.

Asked who would play point guard with the Knicks next season, the source said Toney Douglas would. He also said the Knicks could pursue Steve Blake.

This comes amid an ESPN.com report that James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh met last weekend in Miami to "seriously discuss their futures."

The report quoted a source that labeled Miami "as the frontrunner to land James in a package deal with Bosh," and to re-sign Wade.

OK, this is now getting a little ridiculous:

Quote:
BRISTOL, CT—According to NBA analysts, speculation about where LeBron James might play next season could end when the Cavaliers MVP signs a contract with a professional basketball team. "When he agrees to play for a new team and has an introductory press conference with them—or when he re-signs with Cleveland—that's when I think we'll have a better idea which way LeBron is leaning," ESPN analyst Jalen Rose said during Tuesday's edition of SportsCenter, adding that a good indicator as to where James' head is at might come in late October, when James will be wearing a basketball uniform for the season opener. "Ten games into the regular season, if LeBron James is a New Jersey Net, I think at that point we can effectively eliminate Chicago or Cleveland, but I wouldn't rule out the Los Angeles Clippers. At any rate, by the 2011 All-Star break the picture should become, if not 100 percent clear, a lot less hazy." Rose suggested the guessing game over where LeBron will play next season may not end until he is enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

You'd have to go without a cell phone also. And make sure you stay away from people who might have contact with the outside world as well.

Done on all accounts. I am one of the few who still doesn't have a smart phone. Moving into

The same thing goes for LeBron and Rose being in contact. Not to mention WWW' connections with the Chi. I don't think there's any way Bron wants to go to Wades house and play "second fiddle" when he can just as easily go win championships with the lesser glorified Rose and Noah and take more of the credit. I believe he'll seriously take this into account as well as Chicago the city and the Bulls the team being known globally while over half of America has never even heard of the Heat. If he's going to leave the Cav's he's going to go somewhere he can go global as well as win. Lebron's too smart to be enticed solely on Wade the name when he has a soon to be superstar in Rose and an All-Star caliber C in Noah.

D-Rose and LBJ were AAU teammates.

DDD you just regurgitated the Ric Bucher sportscenter update that has been playing all morning.

Funny cuz I don't watch much TV and I certainly didn't watch SC. I must be pretty smart? Or I'm good at guessing what's common sense. Either way I'll take it. Oh and take a poll on who's the best rapper in the game. Weezy's certainly in the top 3 no?

Maybe for children under the age of 15 or if you only polled Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama.

You need to come to an understanding that MTV doesnt matter anymore. Accept this fact. You will be free.

General free agency question since I'm still basketball ignorant.

So free agency starts tonight at midnight eastern time, but teams can't announce anyone they sign a player until July 8th, right? But players can announce their intentions to sign with x team at any point after midnight tonight?

What's the point of that? Is it a built in week of courtship and negotiations since there should technically be no contact at this point?

It's a bizarre stipulation in the current CBA. Something that may be changed in the next couple years.

I'd say it is a sort of pageantry clause. It gives players the chance to decide right away, or review their options.

Exactly! And I'd like to take this time to apologize to Bills. My son showed me this site about a week ago and after reading I thought I could speak my mind. I'm guessing I have to earn your respect first before I make bold statements. I also wouldn't know about Lil Wayne because I was on my sons profile and just took the first picture I saw that was the right size. I'm kinda computer illiterate. Thanks for being understanding and I'll try to be less brash in the future.

Funny cuz I don't watch much TV and I certainly didn't watch SC. I must be pretty smart? Or I'm good at guessing what's common sense. Either way I'll take it. Oh and take a poll on who's the best rapper in the game. Weezy's certainly in the top 3 no?

No
