IS it just me or does anyone else find this guy even a bit funny?

I've met him personally, I checked him into his hotel room when he did a show at Illinois State this past Novemer. He actually struck up a convo with me about how he just quit smoking and that I need to try my hardest to quit...So great guy, but not funny at all.....He offered me backstage pass to his show that night, I didn't have the heart to tell him that I didn't find him funny in the least...so I made up the excuse that I had to work late and wouldn't be able to make it. Anyway, great guy, lame comedian.

He has a few good bits, but overall he doesn't crack my top 10. Tourgasm on HBO is horrible.

His most redeeming quality is that he is under 50 years old.

There, I said it, I'm an ageist. That man can tell jokes, but he's not funny.

If we were sitting at a bar, I'd need him to shut the fuck up in less than two minutes.

His routine is average at best. The only reason he's become the phenomenon that he is is because he's probably the only decent-looking stand up that anyone can think of. He's easy to market the shit out of, and he makes a huge effort of doing that for himself, too.

My like of him is waning. I bailed on Tourgasm after two episodes, and his guest appearance on SNL last year may have been the worst since Joe Montana hosted. (Although in fairness, nobody could make that atrocious writing funny.)

And he absolutely bombed at the VMA's a year ago, only received uncomfortable "polite" chuckles.

Greg you took the words right out of my mouth, he doesn't have to be funny if he's got Jessica.

UPDATE:

If you're tippin a few tonight, and are in the mood for some unconfortable television, Dane Cook is hosting SNL. The last time he hosted was like watching a dozen hack comics, all bombing at the same time, at your local comedy club. Awkward laughter abounds.

I thought his most recent HBO special was decent. But his opening routine on SNL tonight wasn't funny. He knows how to deliever a joke but the joke isn't funny.

Like with everything else, his specials on Premium Blend on Comedy Central were funny, but then he got popular. This date movie was the last straw - he is now concerned with being marketable, and not with being true to his brand of comedy. While some would argue it is inevitable, it doesn't mean I have to like it. Maybe Mitch Hedberg had it right - go out before you are forced to sell out, and everyone remembers the 'good times.'

Agreed. I thought “Retaliation” was pretty funny, but Cook’s recent HBO special was just flat out horrible. Quite possibly the worst stand up show I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen hundreds of em. I was actually embarrassed to be watching it about 20 minutes in. I’ll never waste my time with him again.

You've obviously never seen the Joe Piscapo HBO stand up from 1990. It was 60 minutes that should have been spent on his therapist's couch. The highlights include Joe bitching about his child custody battle (even though he left his wife for his 18 year old babysitter), and taking a "live" piss test for steroids. I watched this shit on mushrooms, and couldn't summon a chuckle.

Was that the "Man of a Thousand Faces Show"? If I rememeber correctly, I thought he did a good Andy Rooney.

Yeah, with heavy makeup, he looked and sounded like Andy Rooney. The only problem... IT WASN'T FUNNY!

No he sucks, he's another in the long line of pretty, harmless, cookie cutter lame comedians in the tradition of Sandler, Jimmy Fallon and Carrot Top.

The worst part is that Dane Cook steals most of this material from Louie CK -- the guy from the show "Lucky Louie"

I watched his standup act on HBO and caught a show on Comedy Central once. His act tends to involve telling the audience about his interpersonal relationships and friends and throwing a pop culture reference from the mid to late 80s and early 90s, e.g. Super Mario Bros or Rainbow Brite. Then he runs around and slides on the floor and makes a face. He accepts every friend request on myspace and I heard he used to actually talk to people on IM and ask them to come to his shows. Must be doing something right. I ain't laughing though.

Actually, this is one of the cool things about him. He learned a long time ago that there was a way to tap a new audience, and this was how he did it. Its where he built a huge following.

The Burger King drive thru bit was pretty funny.

That being said, Dane Cook mugs too much for my taste. His whole act seems to scream, "Look at me! I'm making faces, shouting and moving around a lot! That's funny!" The guy tries too hard because the material itself is too weak to stand on its own merits. So he has to add all this extra shit to it, which really only makes him look like a schizo patient.

There have been many discussions on this forum about greatest comedians of all time, but are there any comics right now that our kids'll be talking about in 20 years as the greatest? I don't really see any.
