I used to have dozens of jerseys from all 4 major sports. I haven't worn any in years though. I have a good 15 fitted mlb and milb hats though that I wear on a consistent basis. I am still livid about the material change in the fitted hats as they don't fit anymore. It used to be so simple, get a slightly larger hat, wear it in a hot shower and leave it on until it starts to dry and then you have a perfect fitting hat.

SHAKE THAT has a show that is often prempted by the Sox and he still gets more conversation going on this board than the "Saloon". Can we get a Sir Larry section in place of CJH?

Yeah! That's what I did with my wool hat. First, you take all the backing out of the front panels. Then hot shower, shampoo and condition it, wear it out in the sun for hours, fits like damn. The polyester hats don't shrink to fit your head. I had read that the change to polyester was coming, so I preemptively bought a new Cubs hat back in spring of 2006 so that as soon as my old one fell apart, I'd have one last wool hat. As it turned out, my old hat mysteriously disappeared a month or so later, and so I've been on this one for a touch over four years. It's looking a little ragged at the seams now, so I need to take pretty good care of it from here on out.

I think posing as Dan Hampton's bitch is much worse than wearing a jersey.

This is also worse than wearing a jersey. What the hell is this about? It's almost like Larry goes out of his way to look like a d-bag.

Larry is the goods, IMO. His show is one of the only things on the Score I make a point to listen to...

Is he supposed to be considered sports royalty or something, Spaulding? I've heard of Sir Laurence Olivier, but Sir Laurence Holmes? Puh-leeze!

Laurence's shows are great for people who've never before listened to the radio.

"This is a microphone. When I speak into it, the sound of my voice travels through a computer, a mixing board, and a broadcast transmitter that then carries the sound of my voice - as I speak through a microphone - out to you, Scoreheads. Without this microphone, you could not hear me talk, and that's the point of radio, for you to hear me talk. Let's dial up Elmwood Park in Ken - Ken, now that you know what a microphone is, let me ask you this: what is a telephone?"

I know its wrong. He's a guy who isn't comfortable with himself, which is a pitiable position. Still, he says some stuff that just begs to be jumped on.

Right, but he ACTS like he's the most comfortable guy ever.

Very weird.

Weird and entertaining

There is something very strange and weird about him and his show, especially when its just him. I feel like he has a flashlight, a hotline phone and a microphone inside of one of these at his mom's house.

But Larry picks on the weak. I'm reading here that Larry has made Rock Mamola his target. Why? Because he's a nothing at the station. Contrast this with how Larry treats the prominent people that work at the SCORE. "Hi ya Uncle Terry!!! Hi ya Dan!!!! I'm really really excited to talk to you guys!!!!"

He also picks on Rock because Rock represents the so called "white trash" guy that Bernstein hates. So, of course, Larry hates Rock and his kind too. Yesterday Bernstein said that "white America" needs to stop getting tattoos. That probably hurt Rock. It's one thing to hear it from Bernstein but Rock shouldn't have to take it from Larry.

That's exactly it. He's like the kid who got pantsed by the football team and then goes over to his friend's house where all his buddies are playing Dungeons and Dragons and pantses someone's little brother.

If you add up all of the cheap shots and mean things said by Bernstein and his crew it's far worse and much less deserved than the things said here. Bernstein and his crew don't realize that. They're really hateful and angry people.

That's why I laugh when somebody posted that Larry called out the "haters" here. That's what they are. But only to people that they don't have to be around. They'll take their shots at Stu Scott, Steven A Smith and other out-of-town athletes and media people. Or even local media people. They'll say horrible things about them. They'll take dirty cheap shots. Larry kisses the ass of Bears players and important people at the SCORE. Bernstein and his crew all stick up for each other and endorse each other as they bash everybody that's not like them. It's quite sick. It's amazing how the SCORE got to this point. We all accept it cuz it's just the way it's been for so long, but I can't imagine any other station in the country being like this. There is no way another radio station has a leader with so much influence. It's amazing what Bernstein created. It was never his intention. He just has weak-minded blind followers eager to be like him. They all repeat the same race and sex jokes. They all have the same sports thoughts. It's all delivered in a Bernstein-style fashion. People here deny it, but it's true.

Look how Larry went after Tommy Williams and Mike Murphy after they left the station. Larry said Tommy didn't like him cuz he was black. Maybe Tommy didn't like Larry cuz he's a punk. Larry could never see it that way. It's always about race. :(

+10

the score will always be small time, not that the alternative of the ESPNization of sports media is anything special. Bernsie is a clown, hates himself, wishes he would have gone to law school or med school or gotten his CPA or whatever.

I think he still is the little kid with the "in" who got on the Cubs game with Harry, wanting to be the next Walter Kronkite and actually thinking that he could become it.

Bernsie, jewish kids from the north shore don't get to be the most trusted name in television journalism. They do however get to become embittered "know it all" mean spirited sports talk hosts, who work on sports radio but talk about how much they hate sports, rip on whites, rednecks and any white majority that will not stand up for itself. Id like him to say some of the North type stuff on minorities (not that I liked North, but that boor was one controversial radio personality).

He tried to do the DePaul play by play thing and go the play by play route in his quest for leaving the score, but his ability to piss off the Catholics in a primarily Catholic city trashed any hope of that.

He's really just a sad person, it must take a great deal of energy to be that unhappy with yourself. The fact that an insecure person like Holmes could look to this guy as a mentor or a model or anything to be looked up to is evidence of the blind leading the blind.

whatever, Im gonna go for a bike ride.

So... Bernstein isn't white? Chicago is ruled by Catholics and cares deeply about DePaul hoops, to the point that it matters what a radio PBP guy says about its priests? Bernsie has a quest to leave the Score? Journalism is only for working class Gentiles? You know him personally and can gauge his level of satisfaction with his life and career choices? He hates sports?

You can't prove any of these things, and therefore, you probably don't need a helmet on your bike ride.

I'm not sure it was what Bernsie said about their priests, as much as his repeated desire to paint all priests with the same brush because of the actions of a relative few.

Not sure if 'relative few' is accurate. Couldnt one be disgusted with the entire group because the leadership did nothing (transfer to another parish) for so long?

But your point about it pissing off the catholics sounds right. Do you really believe thats what happened there?

I know that The SCORE & CBS2 are owned by the same company, CBS, but since 1984, ABC7 has been Chicago's choice for news. I wonder why...

wow, I must have done a pretty crappy job of making my point there.

Bernstein was the play by play guy for DePaul hoops, DePaul fired him in a pretty public rebuke due to the content he was saying on his show regarding the scandal that plagues the Catholic church; true of not, BS or not, his comments made him box office poision for any other job in a play by play capability. If you want to debate the role of the Catholic church, even post scandal, as a force to be reckoned with in Chicago media Ill tell you this, it isnt what is used to be, but its pretty damn powerful. The point wasnt the scary power of DePaul hoops as a ratings magnet, but if you screw up the little job, there is no way you'll get the bigger job in Chicagoland media, especially if the controversy you create has to do with pissing the Catholics off.

little Danny Bernstien while in the booth with Harry on the Cubs broadcast lo these years ago talked about "when I grow up, I want to be a newscaster." My point, even though I didnt particularly do a good job of making it apparently was that people that look like him do not get jobs as big time news anchors. The statement was more a blanket statement on what producers look for when casting a news broadcast, sure Baichwal, Linda Yu and others consistently have broken the mold on a local level as to what demographic type gets to read the news to you on a daily basis. I dont see too many jewish people doing the ABC news was the point that I was trying to make. It is a statement of the nature of what is cast for a newscaster. My point is that he is not of a demographic that is cast for hard news. Sure, Im probably wrong, WASPs arent anchormen any more, I dont think so.

I am opining on Bernsies attempt to go for something better, something bigger, which I do not think he is going to get. I dont know him personally, Im doing some armchair analysis here. On todays show, he sure sounded like some guy who hates sports. The only reason Im listening to him now is because carm, jurko and harry is a trainwreck. The B&B show is pretty heavy on the negativity, if you think it is sunshine and lollipops, fine by me pal. I dont know him and could care less about knowing him, I was engaging in what this board is all about; in what sports talk radio is all about, making an opinion, firm or not, solild or not, backed by nothing but conjecture and talking shit about it.

so that was my point, and thanks for the comment on me not wearing my bike helmet, in borrowing from the Dan McNeil thread post a date and time for us to meet and ill kick your ass pal!!!!!
:D
