Bulls, Celtics battling for Howard
By Mark J. Miller
Swingman Josh Howard(notes) spent time with the Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks last season and now he's got two other teams battling over his services.

Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears reports that the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls both have "serious interest" in the 30-year-old who averaged 12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game last season.

The Bulls have financial room to sign Howard (depending on what happens with its offer to J.J. Redick(notes)), but the Celtics would need to do a sign-and-trade to get him, Spears notes, because Jermaine O'Neal(notes) has already taken the team's mid-level exception.

The Wizards, Spears reports, also have some interest in bringing back Howard.

I think Brad Miller will be back and isn't that foreign player a big man?

Yeah Asik is a 7 foot Turk

I'd like to see Miller back also, but I read that Houston and Boston have both showed interest.

Did Boston offer the full MLE for Jermaine O'Neal? What do they have left to offer in Year 1 of a deal? I'd think the Bulls would have the inside track here if they really wanted Josh Howard.

If the Magic don't plan on bringing Barnes or Reddick back I would like to see them work out a sign and trade deal with the Bulls for a trade exception. They could use that to trade for a guy like Jefferson.

The trade exception though would only be for about $7 million. What does Jefferson make?

It appears Utah may be the front-runner for Jefferson tonight.

They want a player in return plus cap relief. I think Orlando can make it work.

It looks like Brad Miller has this thing narrowed down to three or four teams. Chicago is probably in the position to make him the best offer. I would really like to see him back on the bench next year. He would add alot of depth and he is dependable on the offensive end.

They still need a backup PG, and I haven't read a single about acquiring one. Does this mean they might just roll the dice on Acie Law? He would probably come cheap, but I don't know if I would want him as my only option. He played great whenever Vinny gave him a shot last year (but that was very rare). I don't understand how Jannero Pargo got so many minutes last season over Law. I would really like to see a veteran backup on the bench also. What about White Chocolate? Or maybe Old Man Buckets can suit up again...

Quote:
CHICAGO -- Free agent center Brad Miller hopes to make a decision regarding his future by the end of the week, according to his agent Mark Bartelstein.

"There's a lot of people pursuing Brad," Bartelstein said during a phone interview.

Miller's name has been mentioned as a possibility in both Boston and Miami over the last couple of weeks, with both teams showing interest in the center, but if the Bulls make the right offer the veteran big man would probably like to return. He was a very popular figure in the locker room last season and came on strong down the stretch after struggling to find his groove at the beginning of the year.

Also, the Bulls have the cap space to offer Miller the type of deal that neither the Celtics nor Heat can probably offer at the moment, because of the other high-priced deals they've made recently.

"[Miller] loves it in Chicago," Bartelstein said.

Turkish center Omer Asik has agreed to a deal with the Bulls and is expected to be in training camp in a few months, but it is still unclear whether he will be able to contribute right away.

Bartelstein expects to have discussions with several teams this week, including the Bulls, especially now that the hoopla surrounding LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh is over.

"You never know for sure," Bartelstein said of the time frame. "But I think Brad would like to make a decision by the end of the week."

Miller averaged nine points and five rebounds last season.

I for one hope Brad Miller can come back. Is a decent backup center at this stage of his career and the fact that people still fall for his upfake and he can drive past them cracks me up everytime.

So since miller was a bull last year, does this mean he can be resigned and it won't go against the cap or are they only allowed to exceed the cap with him, and once exceeded they can no longer sign anyone else? Would you then theoretically want to sign everyone else and get to the cap limit and then resign him? This cap thing is confusing.

Because they were under the cap they can't do either.

One popular name we haven't heard much about in free agency this month?

Tracy McGrady.

The reasons are somewhat obvious: He's had injury problems of late, and he's logged a lot of NBA miles after 13 years in the league. It's unlikely he's going to get a big deal at this point in his career.

Upon getting traded to the Knicks this past season after the Rockets discarded him, McGrady was not quite the McGrady of old.

Yet, if he can stay healthy, he's certainly a solid option off the bench for teams looking for shooting and scoring at a reduced rate.

So as ESPN's Chad Ford reports, the Bulls -- a team looking for shooters -- has expressed some interest.

But T-Mac, like other veteran players without a title, could be looking for a ring in South Beach:

ESPN's Chad Ford

McGrady prefers Miami

"McGrady knows he's not going to get a huge deal at his age. But he's been eyeing South Beach and seems to be leaning toward taking a minimum deal for a chance to play with the Miami Thrice. The Bulls have some interest in McGrady too."

I don't view Ridnour as a difference maker. He's like Kirk, minus the defense.

Livingston appears headed to Bobcats. How about Delonte West? Soon to be cut loose by the Cavs & only making around $4.6 million. Works on a couple of levels for me. TJ Ford also rumored to be available from Pacers.

On a different note, Luther Head reportedly failed a physical with Hornets.

The Clippers do have legit interest in McGrady and are scheduled to work him out Tuesday. As Clips general manager Neil Olshey told ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Ramona Shelburne last week: "Tracy and I have a good relationship. We've known each other for a long time. He and Baron [Davis] have a good relationship [and] we obviously have a need for playmaking and scoring on the wings.” But sources say that news of the workout being made public was also intended to let the Bulls know that McGrady does have other options, since Chicago is where those close to McGrady say he’d love to land.

Keep him away from this team at all costs. They will have enough problems getting out of the first round without him. If he is added, they are doomed.

I would love for them to get him. Of course the biggest issue is his health.

He can still play but he just can't seem to get his knee right.

I'm not sure....I don't often buy into 'chemistry' but I feel like if he were there he'd be out trying to prove that *he* can still be a player and not so much focused on helping the team win and playing whatever role best suited the Bulls.

Which means no defense, no 'Skying', no elite status as an NBA player. I dont know if Id want him on the Bulls. Basically a decent offensive player at this point, and that's it.

The last thing the Bulls need is someone taking the ball out of Derrick Rose's hands. I see no upside of having him on this team. His past leadership qualities should be all you need to see to show what this team would be getting. He would be a perfect fit for the Clippers. He should go there.

I'm fine with it. If you can give him good looks from behind the arc, he can help you. If you are asking him to do anything else, don't bother.
