How do you stick with this team, Cubs fans? Honestly, what is the draw to these guys? They are not even entertaining more than 50% of my lifetime. It seems they constantly choke in pressure situations and every little glimpse of light is just a train in the distance.

Today, I'm not saying, I'm just sayin'.

Generally, I am a baseball fan. I consume a sufficient amount of Cubs games a year to put my knowledge of them at a level at least equal to Stoney. It just gets to this time of year and, while better in record, they are really in no real better position than the Pirates. Sure you had 07 and 08 to warm you up. But generally, this was a good decade and it wasn't even that good of a decade.

As a Sox fan, I can say almost every year that they will be .500 or better, compete for the division and keep the assholery down to a minimum. It's not championship baseball, but it is competitive since about 1990.

What do you get for your love as a Cubs fan.

The Sox had arguably the best team in baseball for one year in each of the last two decades. They were one of the winningest teams of the 90s. Even the bad blip in the late 90s featured the first years of true stars like Ordonez, Lee, Konerko and Buehrle.

A kick in the balls every single year. Why do you concern yourself so much about what Cubs fans get from their team. Yes the Cubs are bad. Yes most years they are bad. So me personally as a Cubs fan I tend to not focus my attention on every single game while they are sucking this hard and I instead turn my attention to other interests like killing time on the internet here and doing things outside in the nice weather. You seem like you are asking people to simply justify their fandom based on Wiins and Loses when it is not nearly as subjective as that. This is kind of Bernsteinesque as you seem to be having difficulty understanding alot of the intangible things that going into being a fan of a team. Guess what the Cubs will continue to suck. And I will continue to watch the Cubs.

Cub fandom is very much a sunk cost issue. People, in general, are irrational when it comes to time or resources invested in a losing project. They tend to want to stay with something longer than they should because they feel responsible for their lost time or money invested and think that by staying with it, that time, money, or energy is validated or "not lost". But that's what a fan is - an irrational advocate.

Rationally, you'd say any fan should reevaluate at the beginning of each season which team has the best opportunity for success and be a fan of them. But, doing so would go against the ideas of loyalty involved with being a fan.

Cub fans just take the idea of fan loyalty to the n-th degree. I will be there when they win a World Series and everything I've suffered through will make it that much sweeter.....or I will kill myself with anticlimax.

I think I know the answer. I've had several women tell me that they would rather be hated and treated horribly than ignored, I see the same thought pattern in White Sox fans with respect to their relationship with Cub fans. As far as the Average Cub fan is concerned the White Sox don't exist and that's the part that angers Sox fans the most. It's almost as if there is a sort of inferiority complex expressed in the feeling that they're not even worth enough to be hated by Cub fans. Dunno, If the Cubs were in 1st the last place I would be is in a Sox thread, just sayin'.

I certainly did not fall into that category. I said in spring training 2009 Hendry put together a lousy roster. May I also point out, I was also one of the few who said they would have trouble with the Dodgers in 2008.
