Today was the first day that Corey McPherrin made the transition from sports to hard news as new co-anchor of FOX32's new look "Good Day Chicago" with Anna Davlantes from 7-10a weekday mornings. All indications were that Jill Carlson, FOX32's #2 sports anchor & reporter since 1999, would take over as sports anchor of the FOX-owned station's 9p weeknight news, now anchored by Bob Sirott & Robin Robinson. That was, until Vocalo's Rob Feder broke the news today on his blog.

Feder reports that FOX32 has decided NOT to renew Jill's contract when it expires at the end of this month. Carlson, a 12-year station veteran, joins a growing list of anchors, reporters & technicians at the FOX-owned station that have recently been laid off or whose contracts simply aren't being renewed. That includes weekend anchors Byron Harlan & Nancy Pender, whose contracts weren't renewed after anchoring Saturday & Sunday night news on FOX32 the last 13 years.

While Carlson can be seen weekends on "Golf Chicago TV" on Comcast SportsNet, she's hopeful to land another job in this market. It also leaves WFLD in quite a bind, especially with Bears' season right around the corner.

Lou Canellis, who recently joined FOX as morning sports anchor, will be preoccupied pretty soon with his other duties with the Chicago Bears Network. Canellis will be on the sidelines for all 4 team-produced preseason games that FOX32 will televise, starting with the Bears' preseason road game in San Diego August 14th. Canellis will also be hosting the team-produced pre & postgame shows, "Bears' GameDay/GameNight Live", featuring WBBM Newsradio 780/Bears' Radio Network voices Jeff Joniak & Tom Thayer, starting September 12th. Lou also hosts a new season of "Bears Recap" Mondays at 5p, plus "Bears Blitz" Wednesdays & Thursdays at 4:30p on Comcast SportsNet. Needless to say, Lou's plate will be kinda full.

You're not telling us who will be working on the Fox news at 9 after her contract is up. What the hell SHARK?!?! I need to know who is going to give me my sports info for the 10 minutes I am waiting for an Office rerun after another glorious White Sox victory.

When the story about Corey McPherrin & Anna Davlantes anchoring "Good Day Chicago" became a reality about 2 weeks ago, all indications were that Jill Carlson was going to anchor the sportscasts on FOX32's 9p news, even if it was a short term deal. Check out Vocalo.org and Rob Feder's entire post on this story. To say it caught a lot of people off guard would be an understatement...

From Phil Rosenthal last week...

Precedents in Chicago TV for McPherrin, whose 9 p.m. sports duties will be assumed by Jill Carlson when he teams with co-anchor Anna Davlantes on Channel 32's "Good Day Chicago" beginning Aug. 2, include Warner Saunders, the late Tim Weigel, former WFLD morning co-host Mike Barz and Weir.

I don't think Phil would have reported that without having told that.

She was a good fill in, but it ended there.

I could think of a few in sports radio that I could envision taking over that 9PM slot: Obviously Waddle, Silvy also and everybody's favorite radio host: Laurence Holmes.

Waddle's schedule is too insane though...

Time will tell.

I don't know about Laurence Holmes, Grid. If you thought it was creepy to see LoHo look over Paula Faris' shoulder on NBC5's "Sports Sunday: The Postgame Show" going to a commercial break a couple years ago, imagine how horrified meteorologist Amy Freeze must be if LoHo looks over her shoulder, if you know what I mean...
