Might be the worst thought I've ever seen on this board.

Someone isn't less of a fan because they don't attend the event live. There are seemingly limitless factors that could prevent someone from going to an actual game, just a few of them include:

-Money
-Geography
-Work
-Family
-Some events are simply more enjoyable to watch on TV

I can't believe someone really thinks this. It's the same crap as people calling in displaying their Hockey Resume's etc.

No. That comment is entirely preposterous. For many, many reasons. Many of which you've dismissed with even more preposterous comments.

It's absolutely not preposterous when you're trying to measure the popularity of something. If someone can't be bothered to see a sport in person maybe they aren't the fan they thought they were. So calling themselves "fans" in a poll is pretty meaningless. I'm not an NFL fan at all but my TV is often tuned to games in fall and winter. And you want to use that to support some conclusion about popularity?

Wait a minute. So you think popularity should be measured by how many people have a passing interest in a particular game and might happen to flip the TV to it as they're sitting at home? Do you really think that? Talk about horrible thoughts.

You're certainly not the fan Shirtless Driver is anyway. I think it should be obvious a guy like him has a bigger impact on their popularity than you do.

Let me explain it to you.

You have spent x number of dollars and x hours of time in support of this entity that you are claiming to be a fan of.

Another guy has spent 10x number of dollars and 23x hours in support of a different entity.

If one entity has 1000 fans that are like the first guy and another entity has 880 fans like the second, which one is more "popular"?

You are thinking about this too hard.

Are you saying that the popular vote doesn't differentiate who is more popular?

Popularity is measured by one person, one vote. Just like tv ratings, elections, school referendums, and pretty much any type of polling. They never ask "Do you really care a lot about this? If you do, we'll count you more than once".

I would suggest you're mistaken. I guarantee you the leagues themselves are measuring their popularity based on dollars.

In which case the NFL wins again. The fan who gets out of bed to flip on the game helps the league significantly both in terms of advertising dollars(commercials) and TV contracts because networks want to show a product that people are watching. You seem to want to punish the fans who can't attend a game most likely due to factors outside of their control. I don't get it...

I would suggest that you don't want to compare the NFL and MLB in terms of dollars made unless you think one team in the top 20 vs. roughly 10 is good for your case.

There are a lot of different ways of judging "popularity" which has been my only point all along. I have no inclination of getting into a semantic argument with you.

But you think that doesn't count so it doesn't matter. It's one man, one vote for popularity, right? See, we could go around and around like that all day, but I'm done here. Go get your self-satisfied grin on and tell yourself, "Ricky boy, you've won another one!"

Okay, great. So if football is really so much more popular, why do Patriots fans feel the need to chant "Yankees suck!" at their post Super Bowl rallies yet Red Sox fans never chant "Jets suck!" when they're celebrating a World Series? I'm just asking the question. Shouldn't these fans simply be celebrating a win in the most important game of the nation's most popular sport rather than thinking about a team from a less popular sport that won't play a game for another couple months?

Because Boston fans are morons. I wonder how loud the chant really is in person vs how it may get miked up by the media. The part of me that doesn't give a damn about the Cubs brings about that thought.

Precisely. Its the same reason you hear "Cubs Suck!" chants when the Sox are playing the Indians in August...or why you hear "Cardinals Suck!" when the Cubs are playing the Pirates in June. There are meatballs all over the sports landscape.

You're FAR more likely to hear "Right Field Sucks!" than you are "Cardinals Suck" at that Cubs game. In fact... I've never heard that at a Cubs game (been to a few in my life) at all. I think you're making this all up.

The one that drives me nuts is "DETROIT SUCKS" at a Hawks game following a game against Nashville.

i'm confused. why not just judge the $ value of all the teams in the respective leagues? i'm guessing the NFL wins that one.

I really don't think it matters how you judge the teams, the NFL is going to come on top pretty much everytime.

No they won't.

So let's add people would rather watch meaningless football where the starters play about a series before sitting out rather than watching the most hyped baseball rivalry in history. No wonder you don't want to count tv ratings. It really is concrete evidence.

How do you know that they don't chant "Jets suck!" or "Go Pats!". Let me guess, ESPN showed the "Yankees suck!" chant. They aren't known to try and build that series up for ratings are they? Oh wait...

Is that really your answer? Well do they chant "Jets suck" at a Red Sox rally? I'm asking the question. See, unlike you I'm interested in the right answer. You just like to bludgeon people with your viewpoint. So, I'll ask again, do Red Sox fans chant football related slogans when they're celebrating their championships. Someone here should know. And if they don't why is that? We know Patriots fans chant "Yankees suck!" at their rallies. It's just a head scratcher for me because so many of you are so insistent that football is "more popular" simply because more people like watching it on television. Why are the great and devoted fans of a gallant champion of America's MOST POPULAR SPORT so interested in a team from a minor sport that is over two months out of its season that they are chanting derogatory slogans about it when they are supposedly celebrating victory in the ultimate game of that most popular sport?

I'll tell you why. Baseball is more important to people. That's why they are hurt like children discovering there is no Santa Claus when they find out their baseball heroes are on drugs. They couldn't give a shit that their football heroes are juiced. It just isn't that important. That's why they become angry and disillusioned when there is a baseball strike or lockout. Baseball is part of the fabric of their lives. And when it's gone, people get hurt and angry. A man only has so many summers. If football is canceled next season people will just find something else to watch on television.

Using what random people chant during sporting events to make your point is bad for business.

I'll tell you why. Baseball is more important to people. That's why they are hurt like children discovering there is no Santa Claus when they find out their baseball heroes are on drugs. They couldn't give a shit that their football heroes are juiced. It just isn't that important.

This completely ignores the fact that baseball is far more of an individual sport so records and players are looked upon differently than football. And who is that hurt anyways about steroids?

If football is canceled next season people will just find something else to watch on television.

Your opinion, which if you take into account the TV ratings, is wrong. I think the uproar will even be more significant than the baseball strike. Watching a football game is a social thing. It's a way for families and friends to get together on the weekend and forget about their troubles for three hours. If there is no NFL, an unbelievably large segment of society will be affected and the outcry would be defeaning
