I think you could find a lot of knowledgeable basketball fans that would tell you he isn't a Top 50 guy all-time. Bayless is goofy if he really thinks he isn't a legit Hall of Famer though.

Skip Bayless has zero credibility. His whole act is saying shit for shock value, and taking the contrarian point of view. He's a gargoyle looking douchebag.

Yeah, I had a hard time with it too. But you aren't missing much. Bayless is just railing that Pippen was nothing more than a creation of Jordan.

...a product and creation of the greatest player to play in any sport ever...I was there in Chicago, worked for the tribune and covered the last finals team. He taught him how to win, how to work.

Covered the last final team. That makes you an expert. What an unbelievable ass hat. As stated he is just the contrarian mouth piece. This was painful. Save yourself 3:10 and don't watch it.

I do find it somewhat ironic though, that a lot of the same guys who now think LeBron can never be great no matter how much he wins since he is playing with Wade also think that a guy who rode shotgun on Jordan's bus is one of the twenty best guys to ever play in the NBA. It seems slightly hypocritical at the very least.

I see what you are saying, but here is the difference IMO. Pippen was never cut out to be the big dog, he squeezed every bit out of his potential by being the 2nd guy on a great team and that resulted in him being one of the greats to ever play the game. On the other hand Lebron is cut out to be the big dog and instead of going down that path he has chosen to play down to his potential and accept a 2nd guy role on a good team (maybe great team).

I agree that the lack of ego that allowed Pippen to do what he did is a rare quality in the NBA. Boozer referenced something similar in his first Bulls press conference when talking about Noah. He said something like, "We don't have a lot of guys like him in our league." I took that to mean a guy that knows where he fits and just does his job. Noah scored in college. Most idiots with his exact same skillset would want to be "The Man" and would disrupt the team rather than rebounding and playing defense and being happy about it. I think Noah was the main reason a lot of people though the Bulls were a "better fit" for LeBron. It's an old saying, but there's only one ball.

Anyway, I just have a hard time comparing Scottie to a guy who was a premium scorer and focal point of his team like Bernard King. And finally, the NBA is odd in that the rules change so much or the enforcement of them does anyway. For example, one year they might direct the refs to focus on cutting down handchecking. When you're judging guys on their defense that has to be considered. The Bulls played great team defense and Scottie was the key guy. But it's hard to compare what they did in a time when more leeway was given to play what may have been whistled as a zone in the 70s.

Jordan doesn't win 6 titles without Pippen. If you think about the Bulls rosters for the six titles Pippen was the only guy to play on all 6 teams with Jordan. Pippen's size and speed made him a great defender and he could score too. Whether he's top 50 is questionable maybe, but he was the best no. 2 man probably to ever play the game. It's very rare to find a 2nd best player on a team who can contribute without wanting to be the main star (i.e. Kobe Bryant). I don't believe that two players have ever won more championships together than Jordan and Pippen. He is definitely a Hall of Famer.

The problem with this point is that most people either already think Lebron is a better player than Scottie or will in the future. Unless he develops a serious drug problem in Miami I don't see how he isn't at least considered one of the top 20 players in NBA history. While there is a case to be made for Scottie being in the top twenty he's more than likely not.

What Lebron did was take himself out of the Jordan discussion since no on is going to view Dwayne Wade as Scottie in this analogy. In fact, many people made the analogy that Lebron James was becoming this generations version of Pippen by going to a team where Wade has already won a title and is likely going to have the ball in his hands at the end of games.

So I guess we agree JORR. Scottie and Lebron have a lot of similarities.

Bill Russell and Sam Jones won 10 titles together, which is wicked awesome. Russell and Bob Cousy matched MJ and Scottie with 6.

I still think any team with Jordan and Pippen would whip all of those Celtics teams good.

Are you talking the Russell teams or the Bird/McHale/Parish teams? If it's the former I totally agree. If it's the latter, now we have something to talk about.

Well, Rick, I don't really believe that anyone thinks Scottie was the player LeBron is. And I'm certainly not going to declare LeBron the "second banana" to Wade before I've ever seen the way their team plays. I really don't think that's the way it's going to be.

People don't know or they forget or whatever. I wouldn't dream of calling DJ a Top 20 player of all-time and I'm not sure if he even made that NBA's 50 greatest list, but he's a guy who is similar to Pippen. There was a guy named Gus Johnson in the 60s who was just a killer. He could easily be on that Top 50 list. Then there are the guys from the "Drug League" era that probably weren't considered for the list just because the NBA would like to forget them. Guys like Bernard King and John Drew.

Anyway, this is good fodder for argument. There isn't a correct answer. But to me, some of the Scottie love in light of his well-deserved Hall of Fame induction is pure HOOTERVILLE®. He's somehow gone from the level of Dennis Johnson to the level of Magic Johnson without ever having played a game.

They would definitely whoop up on the Russell team. I suppose it's not fair to compare eras though because the rules, the players and the style of the game all change. I mean how would Wilt Chamberlain do if he had to play against Shaq?

With the Bird/Mchale/Parish team that would be an interesting matchup as that would be a difficult matchup for the Bulls. I would pick the 72 win team and put Rodman on McHale, Pippen on Bird and whoever was the center on Parish. I mean didn't Jordan put 63 points up in the playoffs on that same Celtics team? I would still pick the Bulls in 7.
