News: CSN Chicago reports that the Cubs and Braves are very close to a deal that would send 1B Derrek Lee to Atlanta.
Analysis: Lee, who is currently dealing with a nagging back injury, could be a nice upgrade at first for the Braves, as Troy Glaus has been an absolute mess since the break (.196, two homers, 12 RBI). Sure, Lee's injury problems and his lack of consistent production at times over the last few seasons are things to be concerned about, but a move to a contender could get him fired up and raking at the plate in no time.

They just mentioned this on the Score during the update, and the indications are that he already has.

Yeah that is the big question, will he waive the no trade clause?

Isn't he a free agent at the end of the year anyway? Would really just be a drop in the bucket compared to some of the others.

Yes he is. Anything we get in return is a win for sure.

True, true - I'm just bitter after the bag of balls we got for paying to send Lilly out...

I'm not sure why the Bravos would want him.. I guess they would slide Glaus over to 3rd with Chipper gone.

Yep - I was thinking that it was an interesting development when I heard the report that they were saying that he'll get more playing time

1st Base next year is going to be really interesting for us. It really could be anyone. In house options I bet they are considering Ramirez, Hoffpauir, Soriano, Colvin. Plus there are some interesting, albeit expensive, options available on the market.

The last part of your post is interesting, Dan. I wonder if that'll work in our favor, seeing as we have a wealth of options available. Maybe a team will be willing to overpay, or send us a legitimate prospect in order to fill their need for a first-bagger(??)

Once Lee is gone there isn't really anyone that someone would want to trade for. Nobody is taking Soriano's contract. Colvin is a rookie and cheap so Ricketts won't move him. Hoffpauir is a career minor leaguer which nobody would want except maybe MacFail. The only person the Cubs might be able to move is Ramirez if he gets off to a hot start next year.

Can't have Soriano hopping with each catch at 1st. He'd never get anyone out.

Soriano at first would most likely mean Brett Jackson forced their hand and makes the big league club next year. Which would obviously be a great thing. Hopefully Vitters comes back healthy and is ready to replace Ramirez. He was just starting to tear up AA pitching before he got hurt...again.

The Adventures of Soriano at 1st would be well worth the price of admission

McPhail is exactly who I had in mind  think he'll be charitable to the Cub once again?

This is a glorious day. I think he just has to sit on the trade for 24 hrs before the no trade can be officially waived. Hoff can stay in aaa. I want to see this lahair cat in action before he can be officially dismissed.

i hope this doesnt happen, as I dont want to see Nady at first anymore (and never did in the first place, as he is an OF'er)

only way i would approve this, is if Hoffpauir played the rest of the year

But the deal is done, with the Cubs announcing after their 5-1 loss to the Padres that they had sent Lee and cash to the Braves for three pitching prospects: right-hander Robinson Lopez and left-handers Tyrelle Harrus and Jeffrey Lorick.

Lopez is a 19 year old righty who's worked out of both the rotation and the bullpen for A-ball Rome. He has 70 strikes and 43 walks in 92.2 innings, and features a high-velocity fastball with inconsistent command and the usual assortment of developing secondary pitches.

The way this season has been, it would not surprise me if this isn't a typo.

Per someone on my facebook page:

What the f*ck Hendry! You send Lee to Atlanta and get only prospects in return! You could've at least gotten someone to put into the line up right away. I guess he knows that our farm system is shot to all hell. How's that hole coming Hendry? Is it big enough for your fat ass to fit in come the end of the season?

I love when morons talk sports. This is the same guy yesterday that, when talking fantasy football was pretty sure Brian Westbrook wouldnt be in the top ten this year(NO FUCKING SHIT). He also thought Adrian Peterson would drop off big time, because if you look at his numbers he can't be that good(WHAT THE FUCK).
