Sox fan hits the nail right on the head. You couldn't be more right. If you really want to extrapolate it out (Steveism) you can say he quit going into the Dodgers series in the 08 playoffs.

HOV, I think that's EXACTLY what this was. Someone told him the same thing we've said for months... "Why don't you sit the next couple plays out, if you know what I mean."

I agree. When most people talk about his HoF career in the future they will forget about this.

I do buy the excuse. You only have one mother. This team is in shambles, what was to be gained by sticking around?

As someone else mentioned he would have stuck around if they were in 1st place or had a chance to make the playoffs. Being with his mother gave him or the organization an out IMO.

What the hell does he have to cry about? He's retiring from the Cub. I'm stuck with the losers for the rest of my life.

Lou starts the year with his team losing to the Braves 16-5.
Lou ends the year with his team losing to the Braves 16-5.

So perfect, it must be the Cubs.

Why not let Ryno manage the rest of the season so he can get his feet wet?

He earned a shot at the PCL playoffs, starting in a couple weeks?

Because he might end up not wanting the job, and how are they going to attract ticket buyers for next season then?

They have the best record in the PCL but I'm guessing he would still rather manage the AAAA team.

It was not so long ago that I worked on the floor of a large slaughterhouse near Cincinatti. Well it was actually in Kentucky. Florence. Anyway, the deal there was that I was the guy who could run all the different saws, and gutters and forks. I was the guy who could sharpen the blades and rechuck the bits. When someone went to take a piss or cut a finger off I took control of his station until they returned or were replaced. Some of the older guys wore chain mail gloves, but the kids that worked there never realized how the cold rooms would affect their hands, making them slower, less reactionary, numb. I had seen quite a few of these younger kids cut fingers off and not realize they were hurt for 30 seconds or better. Sometimes they would not even bleed, because the cold had slowed the flow of blood nearly to the point of stopping near the end of a 14 hour shift.

They may not want to lose the bump his hiring would bring them on a failed season.

I'd rather manage a "meaningless" playoff run than the shitfest known as the Chicago Cubs.

Well,he made 2 decent moves. Silva & Byrd, but yes,Hendry overall has been guiding the Cubs for something like 14-17 years. Both as the head of the minor league's and GM. He had some success but I could give you 150 million & you might find some good apples, too!

Can we please stop saying Silva was a good move? It was a Bradley dump. He would have taken back a large potted begonia if it meant getting rid of Milton.

Even if Hendry can be credited for selecting Silva, from amogst the candidates available in trade, he has to accept blame for not trading him in June when he had the chance. It was reported that the Mets and a couple other teams had interest in Silva, before he slipped a bit and had a couple lousy starts. ANT chance to dump that contract should have been seized.

I understand Lou wanting to walk away from this mess, but in my eyes he shouldn't get another paycheck. If you want to walk, fine. But don't expect to be paid for days you chose not to work. The team didn't fire him. I know thats not the way it works in Baseball generally. But it shouldn't be any different than if he were an Electrician/Plumber...whatever. You need to take time off to go help your ailing Mother? Understood. I wish her the best and I'll say a prayer for her. But the checks, they're gonna stop.

yes he was...it was mutual...Hendry wanted to give Quade a look and could see that Lou had enough

Im surprised noone on here has hinted at Lou being fired...i thought many on here would be speculating on that

Lou deserves to be paid, he has been a class act through this whole mess, and he went as far as he could, given his mom's health

That destroys the big marketing splash they can create when the hire Saint Ryno right after the season.
Tourist Season is over at The Shrine.
Locals aren't going in September to see Ryne Sandberg do a Joey Amalfitano impersonation.

Piniella basically slept in the dugout for the last two seasons.....the human statue at The Shrine.

If the Cubs record were reversed, Lou would still be with this team.

that is why it bothers me that he is using his mother as an excuse. Just man up and say that watching overpaid players sleepwalk through September is not the way you want to end your career.

Lou Piniella can never say that he never quit anything. And that sucks for him. He'll have to live with quitting on this team back in May and officially in August.

You could argue he quit on this team after the LA sweep in 2008. For the last two seasons he seems to have been going through the motions and collecting his checks.

I did argue that.
