This city's petty hatred for Sosa has to be one of the greatest examples of hypocrisy in our time. What Sammy should have said in that article, in true Gladiator style: "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained?"
He gave the Cubs organization, the Cubs fans, and baseball, exactly what they wanted. Exactly what they were asking for. He was cheered and lauded for it. Now the fickle mob has turned, and suddenly he is persona non grata?
That is bullshit.
He cheated. Yeah there's a few problems with that charge. The most damning of which being that everyone knew it was happening. Everyone. The Cubs top brass knew. The players knew -- and many of them were doing it, too. Major League Baseball knew. The fans knew. And no one gave a rat's shit. Just keep hitting the home runs, Sammy, and we'll love you. That is of course until we change our minds like the windsocks we are.
The other problem with that charge is that everyone was doing it. That is not an excuse, however, it was the demand of the time. The pitchers facing him were doing it. His competitors on other teams were doing it. The Cubs and their fans, along with all of baseball, demanded this circus act, and if you didn't participate, you would be relegated to irrelevance.
Sosa was bad in the clubhouse. As a fan, were you in the clubhouse? That's none of your business. And if it bothered the players so much, they should have busted that boombox long before. Not after he was already out the door. That's weak.
And nothing is more cowardly than the common refrain that usually goes something like "I knew about it and I didn't like it, but I couldn't speak up because I would have been the only one". Sure, it's easy to ride the high-horse now, when it's fashionable to do so. Next time, if you really want to impress, speak out at a time when it might be unpopular - and might mean something, too.
Sammy's poor behavior was enabled from day one. Worse, it was encouraged. Keep serving us the steaks Sammy, we don't care how you slaughter the cow. That is, until it's politically correct to worry about the cow, at which time you'll be cast as the ultimate villain. After we're all fat and happy.
Lastly, let's get our priorities in order. This is baseball. It is entertainment. Period. No one got hurt. No one went hungry. Let's reserve such venom for the true wretches of society. Guys like Blago, Joran Vanderslooth (sp and I don't give a shit), and that assbag barefoot bandit become celebrities and garner constant attention, while a guy who hit too many home runs is a social outcast?
So maybe we'd all be better off if we drop the high-horse routine. If there were problems with Sosa's act, the time to speak out was before. When the balls were flying out of the park. No one did. We enjoyed it all. It happened. So now, man up, and embrace it.
POST OF THE MONTH!!!!
Excellent Summation....
Nobody was screaming about steroids when Sosa was hitting the ball within a few feet of the
centerfield scoreboard!!!
Somebody please explain to me how if fans bought a ticket to a game at Wrigley and Sosa launched 2 to Waveland Avenue how somehow Sosa CHEATED THEM?
