Why would you agree to do that story in the Sun Times today about your 115k Maserati's?? Why would the Times think anyone gives a fuck what these guys drive? People cant feed their families, are losing their homes and they need to see 2 more spoiled athletes flaunting their wealth on the back page? Save that crap for North Shore magazine or something.Nice way to make yourself targets as well guys, especially with the vanity plate for all the world to see and know exactly whose driving it now. Ask Antoine Walker or Eddy Curry how that worked out. Finally, whats the fucking point of having a car that can do 200 mph in Chicago?? when are you going to get a chance to open it up like that around here?? Troopers would be salivating over the chance to put you morons under arrest for shit like that. Just a stupid article and idea from jump street.

I'm still trying to figure out how Harris feels so comfortable with his lifetime earning potential that he would throw down that kind of money on a car. Devin has probably made enough to have a few luxuries and still never have to work again, but Harris is one bad investment from needing to work when he is retired from football.

I read in some articles this past summer that something like 75% of all NFL players are broke within 5 years of retiring. It seems high but for people getting paid the minimum or the amount that some people spend and waste I could see it. Pretty crazy stuff.

My wife worked with the wife of a certain Bears' Receiver/special teamer. I don't think he makes much more than minimum but she and he both have new, expensive rides and tons of bling and expensive clothes.
They will probably be broke within a few years of him getting cut.

I remember reading a few years ago that the first thing Rex Grossman did after he signed a contract was buy an expensive car. After his injury he recognized that the money wasn't going to be there forever and that car was a stupid purchase. Still, that guy grew up in wealth, had a good support system and still made a bad choice. Imagine someone who has less sophistication.

It would be unlawful, but it really would be a good idea for the NFL (and probably all sports) to set up a mandatory program setting aside 20% or so of a person's contract in a living trust. The money would be available, but only upon request and review of whether it is being used for necessities.

The other thing that would be great is if the union raised its dues and set up a scholarship program in which they encouraged all players to finish off their degrees at the end of their playing days.

He's probably paying his Social Security tax like the rest of us.

They have the money management skills of most people their age. They just have a few extra 0's on the number in the bank account.

With the right amount of planning, Devin Hester's grandkids would be financially set and at least 50% of the money he's made should not be spent for decades.

If you need a vanity plate on a Maserati, you have small dick issues.

They should sit them down with a financial advisor or accountant. Give them a plan, budget and show them they do have fun money but it's not unlimited.

folks, this is America.
If you spend more than you make, so be it.
These football players are no different from some limpdick $120k sales manager who has a 65k car and a 400k house with no fuckin furniture in it that's being foreclosed because its 100k underwater.
Very few people make smart financial choices. Football players are not the exception.

They are different in the football player could be set for life and put their future generations at an advantage but the limpdick sales manager will probably always struggle.

I can't agree with legislating common sense. I won't get on that train. Some jerks that think YOU'RE too stupid to handle your money into retirement take 6.2% of your money and then tell you later that THEIR bad money handling skills mean you're only going to see 75% of that money 5 years later than you were told.

That's true.

It certainly is worth a shot at trying to set these guys on the right path, financially. You would just hope that they listen to the advisor and heed their advice instead of the money-grabbing entourage that tends to have such a large influence in these kids' lives.

Fuck 'em! Why should I give a fuck if a guy that has been pampered and been pandered to since he was 16 pisses away his money?

I don't want it legislated but I think it'd be a good thing for an organization to do considering how much money they make with help of these players. A lot of the players don't come from money, aren't too bright, go thru divorces, babies, bad investments that they don't understand, friends looking for handouts, or whatever. They don't have to follow it if they don't want.

Some teams spend a lot of time with educational programs for the players in regards to handling money and setting themselves up for life after football. I know Green Bay has an extensive program. I'm not sure if I read it or saw it on tv, it was a few years ago, but they were job training these guys for the business world after football.

Why aren't their agents suggesting this to them? Seems to be an agent type thing to do, isn't it?

Ok, it is the packers website so try not to get too scared, but I found this detailed breakdown of the assistance they offer.

That's exactly what should be in place. Damn I hate when I think GB is a good organization.

Excellent. Thanks for that.

Except the media isn't going to have a "where are they now" story about the sales manager living in poverty that paints the entire organization (NFL) in a bad light, like they regularly do with football players.

I never said it should be legislated. I said the leage or union should look to do it.

Its not so much that these guys cant do what they want with the money they earn, it's just that why as an athlete, would you go so far as to allow it to be splayed all over the back page of a newspaper. I really dont care what they do with the money they make, no matter how overpaid I feel they all are. I just dont see the payoff for them. I see it as kind of a slap in the face to Joe Sixpack who buys that paper. Also with all the bitching these guys do about how they are targets these days for robberies, etc, its why they carry weapons to defend themselves, why would you show what kind of car you drive and even in Harris' case, the license plate??( GOTSWAG.. ) Their job and they money they make already creates a lot of resentment and jealousy, why exacerbate that situation any further and put yourself and your family at greater risk?
