That sounds like it may be a long, rambling nightmare.

Here's a little more background on what SJ's referring. The White Sox pitching coach has been hired by Turner/TBS Sports to work the upcoming American League Division Series matchup involving the Tampa Bay Rays and an opponent to be named (Texas Rangers? Minnesota Twins?) starting Wednesday. The plan is to have Don Cooper work pre & postgame, but not necessarily with host Matt Winer & studio analysts Dennis Eckersley, Cal Ripken, Jr. & David Wells from the TBS studios in Atlanta, according to the Trib's Mark Gonzales.

It remains to be seen if FOX Sports will utilize Cooper's boss, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, again this fall when they have exclusive national coverage of the World Series later in October. Guillen worked pre & postgame of last year's Phillies/Yankees' "Fall Classic" with host Chris Rose & analysts, both ex-Cubs, Mark Grace & Eric Karros from field level.

He's an incredible jerk when he is on the air. However there have been many times I sat out near the Sox bullpen, and before the starting pitcher comes out Coop has been out there talking with fans, signing things, etc. and just being very cool overall. Its all work once the pitcher gets in the pen though.

Someone needs to ask him about the Sox pitching staff so he can go all Captain Red Ass on them.

Man Sox fans had this guy as a Genius a couple years back.

One time a Sox fan I worked with took issue with me calling Dave Duncan the best pitching coach in baseball.

"What about Coop?" he said

What about him indeed

Coop's track record for turning guys around can not be denied. The issue I have is the way he is SO into routines and defined roles that he has the most inflexible pitching staff in all of baseball. The Sox pitching staff are robots and as soon as something goes wrong like an injury or rain out (which happens over 162 games) it throws the rotation and bullpen in disarry.

Edwin Jackson threw 7 damn pitches in a game that was rained out and he didn't start again for 6 days. Then they have to scramble to find a guy to start game 2 of a damn double header that they end up losing. Bobby Jenks was hurt (but not DL'd) and the Sox lost 3 games in the late innings against Detroit because guys were pitching in different 'roles'.

Things like this happen to every team in baseball and it seems they are able to adjust and move on. A rainout or injury sets the Sox back a week and puts added pressure on the offense to pick up the robots on the pitching staff.

the magic of edwin jackson subsided when he stopped pitching against baltimore and detroit. if he could pitch exclusively against baltimore and detroit i think bob gibson's 1968 season would pale in comparison.

He was 2-0 vs Cleveland so you can throw them in the mix too.

Why would TBS hire an asswipe douchebag like Don Cooper?

Scorehead, your guess is as good as mine. I was under the impression he was going to work pre & postgame for the series involving the Rays & Rangers. That series will start the Division Series tomorrow. Don Orsillo, the smooth-sounding PBP of the Red Sox on NESN, will call this series with Blue Jays' analyst Buck Martinez and Marc Fein on the field.

As long as they don't ask him questions about the White Sox, or second guess him he will be fine. If they cross that line he will turn into Cpt Red-Ass!

Like I said in another section, take a look at the lineup of talent that gets handed a microphone during the baseball playoffs. TBS really leaves no stone unturned. Unfortunately it makes shit heads like Ozzie think someone would hire him for a full time gig.

Lou Piniella was in the booth for the 2005 ALCS, so FOX also does its fair share.

It was hilarious when he stole Steve Lyons' wallet.
