A RP,even a closer is not worth much to a team with so many holes. The Cubs never seem to trade someone at the height of thier value. I think they should get a good deal if they attempt to trade him.

Only if they can get Fielder, Braun, and Gallardo in return.

Pasta I am with you on this one. I brought this up in a thread awhile ago and was pretty much told that its a dumb idea because you don't find arms like his very often but thats exactly the reason you do move him. The Cubs are going to blow with or without Marmol next year and he is coming up on getting a big bump in salary. The window for closers to be effective is smaller than any other position in baseball. Unless you are a freak of nature like Rivera its extremely hit or miss. I would love for the Cubs to sell high on a player instead of waiting for his value to go into the crapper. That being said I don't trust Hendry to get the best possible value in return for him so its somewhat of a moot point.

Phil,
Yes,you are right. The "Hendry Factor" has reared it's ugly head again.

There is only one player on the untouchable list. Starlin Castro. Hendry better be taking offers for everyone else.

I don't think anyone that young can be considered untouchable.

As a Sox fan, I would've traded Gordon Beckham for Adrian Gonzalez when that rumor was circling.

Trade value for value.

This is the point I was trying to make. Marmol has the best value on the Cubs. If you can find a deal that brings back something near that value that plugs some of the glaring holes on this team I think you have to strongly consider making the deal

Point taken. The position Starlin currently plays brings extreme value. But I agree with what you are saying

I agree on Marmol but strongly disagree on Beckham and Castro. They are the type of players a team is built around.

Until they've spent a couple of consistent years proving it, I respectfully disagree.

I wouldn't do it. After you trade him who will be the closer? Whoever it is would probably won't be as good as Marmol. I guess it depends on what you get in return but it had better be a damn good player. If Carlos stays thats one position that can be locked down for a few years.

I am not arguing with your assertion here cause it is right but do you honestly believe the Cubs have a realistic chance to reach the World Series in the next few years with the current makeup of the team and the fact that Ricketts will be slashing payroll?

I am perfectly fine with trading Marmol as long as they get some legit prospects, like can't miss/already kicking ass in AA ball high round prospects. There are some playoff contending teams in need of a closer. The Angels want to spend this off season, so they can have Marmol, but they will be giving back Hank Conger or Mike Trout.

Well sure but the rub is teams have to make a decision before they reach that point in their careers.

I don't see a serious playoff contender for some years. Carlos is relatively young and isn't getting big money yet is he? To tell you the truth do we really even know the direction this team is going as far as personnel? Slashing payroll is the best thing the team can do but I'd like to see Carlos stay but I see your point. I say only trade him if they think he'll want a huge payday and if they get some good players in return. Hopefully Hendry won't be handling this

After watching the Bulls with their "Untradable Prospects" doesn't that bother you?

Oh hell yes. But I doubt that you would get agreement from most Sox fans even after the seasons that the two of them had. I can see the Marmol argument, but like all deals, I would have to see what was offered in return. I really don't think closers, even really good ones, command a top position player or even starter.

I would almost wait for a team to be in contention at the deadline with a horrible closer situation or an injury and then try to hold them up to make them over pay at that point. Obviously this plan carries with it the risk of Marmol faltering or getting hurt.

Looking at the closers that have changed hands recently, I can think of Cordero, Valverde, Soriano, Wagner, Lidge, KRod, etc. I think they were mostly free agent signings. Anyone know of a trade where the team got something of value?

Valverde was traded once in there not sure for what though. I think Wagner has been traded a few times as well.

At this point they may just be looking for bodies to fill out a lineup card. I have no idea what this team will look like next year.

Castro can not be allowed to make about 60 errors at SS next year. Whomever is managing, there is no way they can allow sloppy play at SS.

no they shouldnt

marmol is dominating and if we get rid of them, then we will be complaining that we dont have a bullpen and blowing leads left and right the way Phil McCracken's wife blows him

exactly...as Ive said before, Hendry cant make trades with the big boys unless he gets ripped off...he is an expert at fleecing the Pirates, and using McPhail and the Orioles as a dumping ground for failed prospects

Why not trade him?
To get saves y'all gotta be winning going into the 9th and by the looks of things that will be fucking rare anyhow next year so who gives a rats ass if it's Marmol or some rasin in the lung motherfucker anyhow?

midaswell keep him. trade him right before he becomes a frajent and you get a team desperate and willing to give up more. if that's midseason of this year so be it.

that said, the only piece of cubs memorabilia that i have ever purchased was a marmol 49 jerseyshirt after a 2007-08 game where he and carlos zambrano combined to shut out the mets... the carlos connection. whilst zambrano is my favoritest pitcher in all of baseball, marmol is right up there. i remember when he was on b&b and was asked "what are you thinking when you're pitching out there?" and he replied "you have no chance... ahhahahahahha" that's my closer until the offers absolutely bowl me over.

that said, i expect him to be traded for some middling fuck seeing as it is hendry who has the reigns.

To find a reliable closer is difficult. Answering this question is impossible without knowing who they would be getting in return. It would have to be an exceptional player they would get back in the deal though. There is nothing more demoralizing to a team than to have games given away by a bad closer. I don't think the Cubs have anyone else that I would consider ready for that role so I can't say this is a move I would be anxious to make.
