I've seen a few episodes, and it was okay, but not the greatness that I expected. Are some episodes better than others? And which episode is the best?

whilst i'm far from a MST3K buff my little brother is, and he's sat me down to watch a few of "the really good ones" and i was pleasantly surprised. i liked the raul julia one... i think it's called overdrawn at the memory bank?

and then there's one... time chasers i think? yeah that's it. the one with this guy as a hero

Image

I MEAN SERIOUSLY WHO THE FUCK CASTS THAT GUY AS YOUR LEADING MAN?! he's even more epic when shirtless, as you'd assume.

i digress, those are the two shining ones.... and shit there's another funny one that's like a poorman's b-movie ripoff of gremlins, but i can't be arsed to remember it's name right now. if a mst3k buff happens across my post i'm sure they could enlighten you as to its name.

my specialty.

seek these...and you shall be rewarded with many laughs:

"Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders"
"The Final Sacrifice"
"Mitchell"
"Prince of Space"
"Deathstalker"
"Santa Claus"
"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians"
"Manos: The Hands of Fate"
"Space Mutiny"
"Outlaw" (they won an award for this one, and it's my favorite actually)
"Time Chasers"
"Overdawn at the Memory Bank" (yes, the raul julia one...APPOLONIA JONES!!!)

i don't know if any of these were the ones you saw...but those are usually the ones people bring up when asked what their favorite/best episodes are.

Thanks, guys! WZ, it looks like most of those are available on Youtube so I'll probably start watching some tonight after MNF. Thanks.

hobgoblins! that was the gremlins ripoff i remember... i mean it's horrendously bad, but that makes it quite-fun bad. good comments on that one too.

so hobgoblins, time chasers, and overdrawn at the memory bank (just for the local-PBS-affiliate-made-movie-quality alone) are my trinity... tho i haven't delved in too deep, admittedly.

One of my old favorite shows to watch at a kid. I wish I could remember the episode but I think the movie was set in space. It involved several large muscular blonde men running around attempting to act noble and heroic. Mike and the bots kept riffing all these various names for the character. Flank Hugegroin. Bolt Vanderchest. Big McLargehuge. Flint Ironstag. When I first saw that I was crying from laughing so hard.

Just looked it up while typing. It's the movie Space Mutiny.

"Space Mutiny" also features the greatest continuity error of all time.

Is that Al Noga? No, it's still Johnny Mathis.

it was a quote from the movie, ya goof!

Merlin says it...and then Tom Servo repeats it. Because it sounded so hilarious.

So who did everyone prefer? Joel or Mike?

this spawns the same kind of argument over picard vs. kirk.

i think it's all in your taste. i actually appreciate both for different reasons. joel was the sleepy-eyed softie who let crow & servo be the more sarcastic ones. he was great at invention exchanges (because he was a prop comic, after all) and i liked how he didn't get his lines right all the time in the sketches.

mike was the quintessential smartass. his dry delivery was pitch perfect. he was a better actor than joel; but the sketches, in my opinion, lacked something without joel.

i find myself watching a lot more mike episodes than joel. but i think people forget that mike has always been the head writer of the show, so it's not like he came out of nowhere.

here are some other cast vs. cast comparisons to chew on:

trace as crow vs. bill corbett as crow: for me, it's corbett by a landslide. he had some of the funniest lines during his era and was much sharper I think. plus i liked how much more droll and sardonic crow got. he ditched the cutesiness and i liked that.

josh weinstein as servo vs. kevin murphy as servo: i'm just doing this to school you. weinstein sucked. kevin murphy rules.

dr. erhardt vs. tv's frank: same thing as above. tv's frank is a legend. frank coniff was freakin hysterical. but...

tv's frank vs. pearl: i liked pearl, but again...tv's frank...legend.

tv's frank & dr. forrester vs. pearl, brain guy (or "the observer"), and bobo: even though the network wanted the latter to do an "episodic" format that murphy objected to, sometimes it was kind of interesting to see the storyline progress. but forrester & frank had such great moments together...like ordering from Togo's pizza (but getting Torgo's instead), to going back in time...those were great days.
