According to Will Carroll of Baseball Prospectus, via his twitter account, the Cubs are close to naming Mike Quade as the team’s manager. In addition, Carroll reports that Ryne Sandberg would join Quade’s staff as the Bench Coach.

Carroll tweeted at 4:02PM today: “Hearing that Mike Quade will be named Cubs manager, with Ryne Sandberg as bench coach. Could happen as soon as next week.”

This is really no surprise since the Teflon Pitching Coach was renewed. It looked like an inside hiring after that was announced.

Any word as to if Jody Davis, Mark Grace, Billy Williams, Ernie Banks and Tom Dreesen will be on the Coaching Staff?

If this is true, it really knocks Peoria Matt down a couple pegs as a source of information.

Now that Jen Patterson has been kicked to the curb, Spada has faxed a resume to Comcast with North as a reference!!!!! Plus David Hernandez, Lecet and Notre Dame High School.

What did Matt say?

He had it on good authority from his Peoria sources that Quade wasn't going to be named manager.

having both guys in the fold means that if the team fails under Quade, Sandberg will be promoted to manager...

it really means that Hendry wants Sandberg but wants to start with Quade since he doesnt want to break the momentum from the end of the season

i think it's a great smart move, but if u look at it from afar, it's as if Hendry doesnt know who he wants as manager...so he is bringing them in more or less as co-managers, with Quade the obvious starting point

that was before the season ended, i think that last road trip really elevated Quade's status...dont forget right before that they went 2-4 on a homestand

I trust Matt, I think the Cubs changed their thinking since then

Typical Hendry with this fascination with Quade. Winning with no pressure means nothing. And if the spineless Ricketts allows Quade to run the team, then his fascination with Hendry is that much more disconcerting. As for Ryno, accepting a bench coach role may be a good move on some levels, but he should require assurance that he'd be promoted if the Quade "magic" suddenly doesn't reappear next year and both he and Hendry are moved out. In other words, Ricketts backs Hendry's choice of Quade (for whatever reason) but wants "his guy" Ryno in there for when the axe does finally fall on Hendry and then Quade.

We've all said that.

This report has been refuted by multiple people. So who knows at this point? Ryno's people saying that it's manager or bust. The Cubs are still going to interview Girardi unless he pulls a Freddi on them

Where is all this Girardi crap coming from? Why would he ever leave NY? The guy just won a world series, and may win a second ring this year. Why would he give up that job and walk away to manage a club that is probably 2-3 years from being relevant again? If he stays in NY he will probably become the highest paid manager in baseball.

Credit Kaplan for keeping this rumor going. Supposedly he and Girardi have the same agent.

But if you were Kaplan and Girardi's agent, wouldn't you telling Kaplan to shut the fuck up if there was even an ounce of truth to this rumor?

Girardi once said an offer from the Yankees and the Royals would be equally attractive. Thats how important it is to him to live in the midwest (for whatever reason)

It sounds ridiculous but Girardi is a bit of a pyscho, so I wouldnt dismiss it.

That's a Cub tradition that began with the College of Coaches.

So Quade gets his first shot at managing and Hendry picks his coaching staff. Yeah that's a recipe for success.
