I don't really think it is though. Different regions produce different sounds. It's kinda subjective and depends on the individual though. Personally, West Coast music has too much bouncy G-funk like what Tha Dogg Pound and WC were doing in the 90s. I don't fucking wanna dance. One exception is Alchemist, who is from Cali. I love most of his beats. DJ Muggs was awesome with Cypress Hill's stuff too.

Midwest music (like Chicago and Cleveland) uses too much synth and heavy bass. I love Traxster from Chicago, who produced most of the Chicago classics from Twista and others, but the beats are too "busy".

Based on my sensibilities, I prefer dark gritty beats - sinister piano and violin samples, etc...which is why I love a lot of what Rza does. Rza's beats are very dark.

Yeah, see I agree with you that you at least have to listen to some new things. You shouldn't be strictly anything.

For me, I just look for a certain sound and I typically search in the places where I think I'll most likely find that sound.
