If it means anything to you, Laurence Holmes is actually on vacation from his 670 The SCORE evening show starting Tuesday, which coincides with the Bears being on their bye week. Thankfully, when LoHo does take off next week, Hub Arkush and other guys who will be sitting in from 6-10p won't be doing "The Subliminal Song of the Night", the senseless cross-promotion with CBS2's Ryan Baker and the idiotic coughing remix, plus "The People's Hour". I think you'll also be spared that "Family Guy" soundbite about Wisconsin girls, too.

hey SHARK, i have heard some people mention that they have you as a facebook friend... is there any way that i too could ask for that privledge? this is 100% serious, insomcuhas you clearly know your local/media and i do like your encyclopedic knowledge of the subjects and in the perpetual sea of IRL friends who i don't need facebook for, old highschool people who i am friends with for purely cordial reasons, and the handful of women whose company i would desire, i think a little more ATTITUDE and BITE would really help my live news feed. if it's not meant to be public knowledge, could we exchange info via PM?

i'm http://www.facebook.com/aphexedvexed for what it's worth.

Scorehead must still be pissed at Ricketts because this is about the place where he would suggest North and Jiggetts or Mike Murphy.

I would love to hear Murph every night rather than LoHo.

I miss Murph. Murph was just alright with me.

A prostate exam from Andre the Giant would be more pleasurable than 'An Evening with LoHo'.

you know, now that i step back and think about it i totally agree with you. say what you will about murph, but the guy was genuine. there's definitely some of that grobber aura to his show. i remember calling up one night suggesting that the cubs take a flier on troy percival for their bullpen (which i believe tampa ended up doing) and i dropped a few stats and a few opinions (i was trained at a course in THE BRAND wing of the chicago sports talk radio caller hall of fame, no less) and murph engaged me for a followup question or two before thanking me and telling me to call again.

now i do realize this is just some dumb throwaway shit; one guy calling one sports talk show with a host who more than likely somewhat pandered to him in a hope that he would illicit this reaction out of me and possibly develop a new regular listener... but hey, i mean, he certainly wasn't coming from some cold aloof place where you had to "step your game up" to battle wits with the mighty majestic murph. he was just taking calls and encouraging the listener to contribute to the show. i think that's pretty good fare for an evening sports talk show, cuz by the time you get to the evening shift the day's newscycle has been beaten to death by the morning/midday/drivetime shows whose hosts have their thing going on, and more often than not it's kind of like you're pigenholed as to where they've set the topic in stone and you're either going to agree or disagree with them before they move on to something else. i'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, however, if you've had the radio on / in-the-background all day long it's a bit tedious to get 4 more hours of the same show that preceded it, especially when laurence decides to kiss some burn-stine ass and do CONCUSSION RADIO.

let it be engraved in digital stone for future generations of alien invaders to discover: concussion radio makes me want to turn on b96 and like it. that says something. /me runs off to go start a mp3 player thread in the RIP section...

sinicalypse, just so you know, I read and understood almost every damn word of the above.

With what we have to choose from currently, Murph definitely has a place in sports radio. Bring back Murph.

Another vote here for Murph. I listened to about 30 seconds of Loho and that was enough for me. I wonder how Murph's lawsuit is going?

i have one more addendum before i pass out, something that shake that does that bugs the shit out of me:

"joe from bumblefuck is on the score AND HE WANTS TO TALK ABOUT* herpes treatment?"

* = i loathe that device. i catch a vibe like laurence is reminding his callers to stay on topic OR ELSE.... because seriously, what purpose does it serve the listener? i mean who realistically is about to PTFB and then go "oh wait, corky from downers grove wants to talk about the bears... i wonder what she's going to say? i'd better keep listening!"

also, i tend to dislike a bunch of laurence's ostentatious vocal inflections and his cadences. he tries to make use of short little semi-dramatic pauses akin to your average sitcom stars giving the laugh track a second or two to play out. it's like he's acting out a scene as opposed to just hanging out and talking with us.

speaking of, i heard a bit of nine o'clock COLON the people's hour a couple'a weeks ago, and right after the intro music and voiceover guy laurence proceeded to fill up the entire first segment with his thoughts about all the new tv shows, his DVR/watching habits, and about a whole bunch of women on these shows who we should check out ("check out that gugu [whatever] on undercovers... if you like dark skinned traditional african women, mmmmm. that's a thing right there. you won't be disappointed)

this begs the question: is the people's hour supposed to be akin to boers and bernstein's "ask us anything?" or is it merely a vehicle for laurence to display his ability to discuss topics outside of sports?

that said, i honestly wish he'd bring back shake that. my signature now features a quote from redman's "i'll bee dat", so in that spirit, laurence, BEE DAT. i'm man enough to admit that i'd be on the train sometimes and i'd hear that and teh GTL would start pumping through me and i'd fist pump like a champ. haters gonna hate, sir larry!

I like Larry and think its the perfect time slot for him

I could see not liking him though. I listen to laugh, if you want hardcore sports talk, Larry doesnt cut it.

Personally I dont get listening to sports radio for actual sports info, with all the better options on the web and so forth.

Larry solo at night is the very definition of The Peter Principle. I think he does a good job covering the Bears and would be fine with some weekend slot with someone else. But as a solo host with his own show his limitations become glaring.

I haven't heard anything new about Mike Murphy's lawsuit vs. CBS Radio, CP. Like many lawsuits in this country, I think it's pending and there's no definitive timetable when Murph's day in court will come vs. 670 The SCORE's parent company.

It's my understanding that Hub Arkush will be sitting in, although I don't know the exact schedule, thanks to the fact it's no longer on the new CBSchicago.com. It's my understanding that the Daily Herald's Barry Rozner will be riding shotgun with Hub, and I wouldn't be shocked if the gravely-voiced Jim Litke, the veteran AP scribe, also sits in while LoHo is away starting tomorrow.

I honestly get this perspective but I don't think LoHo is funny even in a wow he is so ridiculous he is hilarious kind of way. I laughed much more at Murph's expense than I do at LoHo. I listen to sports radio to be entertained and listening to Holmes just makes me aggrivated so I don't listen. In my perfect world the Score would fire Zaidman and then move Holmes back to the Bears beat and then they could give the evening slot to Goff.

Guys, it's my understanding that now that The SCORE is no longer airing "The Dan Patrick Show" and Les Grobstein now starts "SCORE Overnight" at midnight this eve, you will get your wish with Matt Abbatacola, Jason Goff & Chris Rongey all alternating as hosts of the new "SCORE Latenight" 10p-Midnight Monday-Thursday until the end of the college football season. I'm not sure which of these guys follows the Westwood One broadcast of tonight's Giants/Cowboys' game from Arlington, TX that 670 The SCORE airs at 7:30p this eve.
