The point of the posts is that many, and likely everyone who has posted in here besides you, do consider it the most irrefutable evidence of the popularity of each sport, and we are simply highlighting how wide the gap is between the two.

The bottom line is that there is no metric better to measure popularity because "tickets sold" is too inaccurate(Michigan football vs. Western Michigan in the Big House is more popular than the Super Bowl in terms of tickets sold).

I was listening to Mac go on with this today too. It's not a level comparison any more than the overall attendance that Rick ridiculed. Baeball and football are different games, played at different times of the year, with different schedules. I doubt if anyone here watched all 162 Cub games, but if they played 16 games on Sundays only, a lot of you might plan your week around it. Most people here are more likely to eat at McDonald's than any other restaurant. I doubt any of them would say that McDonald's is their favorite though.

Why do believe TV ratings equal popularity but overall attendance figures don't? And don't say that there are so many more baseball games. I know that. And that's the answer why neither thing is a barometer of popularity.

I think ratings are a better barometer of popularity vs attendance figures.

The simple fact is that it encompasses a majority of the population instead of the random sampling of people who can actually afford to go to games. I love baseball, but if I'm lucky, I get to 2-3 games a year. Why? Because it's what I can afford. Do I watch a great majority of the Sox games on tv? For the most part, yes, but I don't sit there for 3 hours night in, night out because I have more than just my fandom going on. I do however listen to all the day games on the radio, because I'm at work, and I can. Do I carve 3+ hours out of my schedule for Bears games every week? You can bet your ass I do.

I think the two figures work hand in hand. You cannot reasonably use the straight attendance figure though. I think the better figure is "percentage of capacity" coupled with the TV ratings.

the attendance angle is interesting...but, i'm not sure how you can compare 81 games to 8.
baseball would lose the % of capacity argument as well since not every game is sold out.

I just wish people would stop posting television ratings as if they are some definitive statement. We all know football is a better TV draw. We can stipulate it.

The problem with using tickets sold is that it allows one person to get counted 10 times more in baseball than in football. The capacity is also more limited in football and there is no way to measure how many people would go to the games.

Here is an interesting stat that just totally blows the "total tickets sold" idea out of the water.

All below are 2009.
Let's compare the Chicago Bears, once of the most recognizable franchises in all of sports.
Total tickets sold: 498,000 tickets
Let's compare the Indianapolis Colts, one of the most successful NFL franchises of the past 15 years.
Total tickets sold: 532,398 tickets
Now, let's pick a baseball team. I'll choose the minor league team Indianapolis Indians.
Total tickets sold: 549,552 tickets

That's right. If we compare things on tickets sold, the Indianapolis Indians are "more popular" than the Chicago Bears are in Chicago, and the Indianapolis Colts. For the record, the Indians draw 8,202 per game. The Bears draw 62,250 a game at 101% capacity. The Colts draw 66,549 at 105.6% capacity. As someone who spent many years close to Indianapolis, I can promise you that those Indians are not more popular than the Indianapolis Colts.

Rick- just to be clear, I don't think tickets sold is a good comparison. But TV ratings between teams that play once a week and teams that play six times aren't either.

I won't accept that when one is clearly a better comparison than the other. "Total tickets sold" is much more flawed as pointed out by that example.

Every year there is between 4-7 World Series games.
Every year there is 256 Regular Season NFL games.
The NFL game outdrew the World Series game.
This whole "which sport is more popular" answer is absolutely sealed up with this, and all the other evidence offered in this thread.

If you like baseball more, than good, but when you look at the ratings of the events it just shows more people would watch a regular season football game than your championship series, which to me isn't good.

On the attendance thing, the diffrence is people that don't go to a football game, they watch at home, people that don't go to a baseball game, they don't watch.

If baseball had 16 games a year and it was on Sunday, that could help, but people that run baseball and those are the people that have done this to baseball, is the people you should be mad at for what they have done to the game.

To me on tonight's sporting events, I think it would be bigger if more people watched Texans-Colts than Giants-Rangers, because everybody doesn't get ESPN, they do get Fox, so I am actually more intrested in what the ratings are after tonight's game.
