Cubs general manager Jim Hendry confirmed Wednesday that Ryne Sandberg has left the organization after losing out to Mike Quade for the managerial position.

The Cubs offered Sandberg a chance to return as manager at Triple-A Iowa. But Hendry said he spoke to Sandberg over the weekend and was told he declined the offer.

"I don't think that was ever in his plans," Hendry said.

Sandberg is pursuing a coaching or managerial position elsewhere.

"He'll always be a beloved Cub," Hendry said. "And hopefully we'll hook up in the path that he feels appropriate in the near future."

Double-A manager Bill Dancy may move up to Triple-A Iowa to replace Sandberg. Dancy joined the Cubs last year after 35 years in the Phillies organization.

Hendry declined to talk about the possibility of signing Kerry Wood, the former Cubs reliever who had a strong second half with the New York Yankees.

"Everyone knows I have a wonderful relationship with Kerry," Hendry said. "And that'll be a life-lasting one, but to get into specifics now before we ever divulged what direction we're going in would be quite foolish."

Hendry also declined to speculate on whether Tyler Colvin would play first or outfield, saying only he was an "everyday" player.

As for a report that Aramis Ramirez chose not to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, Hendry said he spoke to Ramirez in the final weeks of the season and his return was never in question.

Oh well.

The Cubs offered Sandberg a chance to return as manager at Triple-A Iowa. But Hendry said he spoke to Sandberg over the weekend and was told he declined the offer.
It'd be hilarious to me if no pro clubs signed him.

"I don't think that was ever in his plans," Hendry said.
Yeah, he pretty much told everyone that. Big relevation.

Sandberg is pursuing a coaching or managerial position elsewhere.
Good luck with that.

"He'll always be a beloved Cub," Hendry said. "And hopefully we'll hook up in the path that he feels appropriate in the near future."
Don't tell me who to love, fatboy.

Double-A manager Bill Dancy may move up to Triple-A Iowa to replace Sandberg. Dancy joined the Cubs last year after 35 years in the Phillies organization.
This is such exciting news!

Hendry declined to talk about the possibility of signing Kerry Wood, the former Cubs reliever who had a strong second half with the New York Yankees.
He should also decline to think about it too.

"Everyone knows I have a wonderful relationship with Kerry," Hendry said. "And that'll be a life-lasting one, but to get into specifics now before we ever divulged what direction we're going in would be quite foolish."
A life lasting relationship? What exactly was going on in that bathroom?

Hendry also declined to speculate on whether Tyler Colvin would play first or outfield, saying only he was an "everyday" player.
Nice to see Hendry is already filling out the lineup cards for Quade.

As for a report that Aramis Ramirez chose not to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, Hendry said he spoke to Ramirez in the final weeks of the season and his return was never in question
No shit, chet. Of course it wasn't in question. why on god's green earth would he opt out of 4x the payday he'd get elsewhere while simultanously being allowed to half ass it all the time?
Christ is 2011 MLB season over yet?
For the Cubs, I guess it is.

Good point about that piece on Colvin. If he wants to manage, then go ahead and put on that skin tight uni.

In other Cubs news standout minor league outfielder Brett Jackson has left the Arizona Fall League due to some type of leg infection that has thus far relegated him to only a handful of games in the elite minor league developmental league. He will not return to the fall ball team. Josh Vitters is doing little to impress (hovering around .250) in his opportunities with the same team.
