I know it's not a real site for actual sports thoughts but I thought this was hilarious.
http://deadspin.com/5681041/the-10-worst-long+tenured-head-coaches-of-the-past-20-years
Quote:
1. Rich Kotite

2. Dave Wannstedt

3. Art Shell

4. Brad Childress

5. Wade Phillips

6. Norv Turner

7. Denny Green

8. Jerry Glanville (though I'm not sure about including him. I mean, he DID leave tickets for Elvis every game. Then again, he was the worst TV guy in the universe)

9. Lovie Smith

10. Dick Jauron

10a. Andy Reid

This is why everyone still compares all coaches here to Ditka.

Lovie's 10 games over .500. He's not a great coach, but to call him one of the 10 worst seems silly.

Especially considering that the criteria for this list was any coach at the same job over 5 years. Lovie got to the Super Bowl in his 3rd year in what was back to back 10+ win seasons. I've always viewed Lovie as an extremely average coach.

I agree. I don't really take it seriously.

It's just funny that every coach we've had since Ditka is on there.

but he's tied with Andy Reid. Is there a guy with more success but less respect than Andy Reid?

I don't agree with Andy Reid on the "Worst Long-Tenured Head Coach" list...I agree with the Mike Mulligan-looking Wade Phillips down in Dallas though.

Exept for 2005 & 2006, the only 2 years that the Bears have made the playoffs under Lovie, the Lovie Smith Bears have been between bad & mediocre. I'll go out on a limb & say the Bears wont make the playoffs this year.
Making the playoffs 2 out of 7 years is failure in my world.

Andy Reid 112-70 .615 W-L % I don't get why he's on this list. :? :? :? :?

Yes, I'm disappointed that the Eagles haven't won a championship with Reid, but c'mon.
Marv Levy has the exact same stats. Is he not on here because he took the team to 4 straigh Superbowls? (which is an amazing accomplishment as well).

If the Bears miss the playoffs this year, Lovie will have missed four straight postseasons. I can't think of the last coach to do that: generally, you're either returned to postseason play by the random nature of the NFL, or you've been fired for missing three straight. With the labor unrest meaning that Lovie's probably back for 2011, missing four postseasons and coming back to try and miss a fifth has to be unprecedented approval of futility.

I agree. Yeah he hasn't won a Super Bowl, but he gets shit on all the time it seems. Hell, Don Shula only won one title and that was over 40 years ago.

What do they qualify as long tenured? Marty Morninwheg was about the worst coach ever in Detroit, and iirc he was there at least like 3-4 seasons.

Jeff Fisher. Titans missed the playoffs made the playoffs in '93 and not again until '99. Fisher has been the coach there since '94.

Reid has no business being on that list. He has been consistently good, just not great. Lovie absolutely belongs there. His 10 games over .500 is misleading with some pitiful and ugly wins. Take yesterday for example. Take this entire season aside from the Green Bay game. How would you all view Lovie if you were able to ignore all of Hester's returns. Those returns are a product of individual talent and not Lovie's coaching.

Disagree. You can't play the what if game in terms of wins and losses. It seems that every NFL game could go either way with the exception of 1-2 each weekend. With a sample size as large as Lovie has, it's clear that at the very least he is an average NFL coach.

Well that's kinda why I want to evaluate him without using wins and losses at all. He is going to get credit for 5-3 even though this team is a shit show right now. If I were to evaluate the season without knowing the final scores I would say this is a bad team, probably one with a losing record. I just don't put any stock into the defense of him that he is 10 games over .500 because his teams look like shit more than they do not.

If you want to argue for Lovie being on that list, this is probably a better way of doing so. The Bears were 13-3 the year they went to the Super Bowl. Outside of that season, Lovie Smith is a .500 coach.

I agree with the poster that typed Lovie is an average head coach. The bigger problem is GM Jerry Angelo.

Dissin' Jerry Glanville?!? He's a hoot; he makes football entertaining. He can say he leaves tix for Elvis, for all I know (and, honestly, care.)

Get rid of these semi-cogent jock announcers and bring back Jerry!
