Goff is really quite mundane as a solo host. His topics become conventional, his delivery is mechanical, and his opinions predictable. At this stage in his career, he functions best as a foil for Bernstein or Boers. He hasn't yet figured out how to properly channel his creativity or accumulated the sports knowledge necessary to carry a solo show.

I like Les, Bernstein and Boers solo.

This topic is why I like the board. When we invaded the bikerboard, one of their netboarders pegged us as guys that bitch about sports talkers. Great to see everyone's thoughts and criticisms of each other's choices. The challenge for grading the solo guys is we have relatively few opportunities to hear them and determine their level of goodness. Plus, now it is almost impossible to find out when a host will be hosting and try to follow them.

1. Bernstein
2. Loho - Love or hate him, he is better than most mainly because he has had more experience at flying solo than anyone. The shows can be informative, comedy or PTFB when tough guy Loho emerges. But this is usually a well rounded show.
3. Les - Don't get to catch it much, but he is a fun listen and really good for his timeslot.
4. Brian Paruch (Yeah, I said it). He was a good solo host on weekends. Too much White Sox talk for me, but in terms of carrying a show he did well. Analysis may have been lacking, but the delivery of what he had to say was smooth.
5. Drinky - Shows are always well orchestrated. I don't get the feeling that he walked into the studio and just flips on the mic. Smooth delivery and decent comedy bitz.
6. Hub - Football knowledge is really good. Anyone complaining about an opinionated host is dumb. Having an opinion is the job. Knowlegeable to a degree on other topics. Sticks to sports which gives him a higher rank. Is good with guest callers and has a better rolodex than JenJen.
7. Goff - My personal favorite, but as The Tall Midget has mentioned he is a difficult listen sometimes. He has a little Lou Pinella in him now and again and it kills his delivery. When he removes the Louisms in his speaking cadence, and stops asking a question of a guest, and then answer it all at the same time, he will be a top 3 solo guy. He is funny and knowledgeable. All the pieces are in place.
8. Hood - Only solo guy I can listen to on ESPN. ESPN Doesn't seem to have many shifts for solo hosts. Just good, not a cannot change the channel guy for me.
9. Murph flying solo on weeknights was a good listen. He was an ass and I got tired of some of his bitz, but it was a full show that worked.

Everyone has a different preference. Funny to read what you think is good radio vs. me. YourMom didn't get that and it's her loss.

Agree wholeheartedly. Murph had some great moments and some really bad ones, but he was comfortable in a solo format. Never heard him as a co-host, but I tend to think he is too argumentative and over-talky to host with someone else. Hell, he couldn't even let his guests speak full sentences. That said, I hope Murph gets another gig sometime soon.

I think Bernstine is the best solo host. As someone else said, it's usually a completely different show than when he's with Boers. He's usually not doing the B&B schtick.

Does Hub back-pedal more than anyone else? He'll say someone is the worst whatever, but when he's challenged by a caller (or a host if he's a guest) he'll immediately start to back-pedal and qualify his statement so it's much more tame.

When it comes to flying solo in Chicago sports talk radio, in my opinion, it's too close to call between Drinky and the guy who's on 670 The SCORE & 670thescore.com at 10p tonight. That guy happens to be Jason Goff.

+10 on the the goff opinion there. i've said the same thing a few times now, that jason (at this juncture in his career, anyways) is a really vanilla talk show host solo... it's like he's consulting with HOSTING A SPORTS TALK RADIO SHOW FOR DUMMIES and following a script prepared by the book to teach the host how to do a show. even though jason himself is quite likeable and indeed humorous and entertaining, he clearly functions better when he's with someone else. the last LOL moment i heard on a goff solo show was when he started dropping the RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH clips... but even then he had cosmrocks tannehill with him.

bernstein is pretty good solo... you know, i liked it when he did dan patrick on the national show.. he put away the cutesiness and his overall b&b schtick and worked really hard at delivering a vanilla naitonal sports show, and IMHO his intelligence and perspective and even sense of humor were kept in check when he was doing somebody else's show, as opposed to his own.

obviously les is quite good at what he does, and i agree with the earlier poster who said that he's well-suited for overnights. les, like murph before him (at least when murph worked the shift that SHAKE THAT has now), relies heavily on caller participation and generally tries to welcome the caller into the show and respects the opinion (even though, yeah, les does often show off the encyclopedic sports knowledge... however i don't think it's with an "I KNOW MORE THAN YOU" edge like scorehead projected"

i don't like matty solo... laurence, well, shit.... he's laurence. he kind of doesn't really work too well with a host or by himself... he's outkicked his coverage in the hosting dept, although if he was paired with a non-bernstein-disciple he'd probably work as a second wheel.

so i guess... holy shit i'm going to agree with, was it RPB? hub. i like hub... now when hub talks NBA it's laughable because please don't forget

Hub Arkush wrote:
LOL Deng is the most underappreciated athlete in this city. He gives you 18/6...and I'm sick of hearing about his contract

hub obviously knows football and there's some blowback from diehard bears fans that think he's got a stoney syndrome where he's bitter that the bears fired him from the radio team so he's extra critical about them, but i've found that he tends to be fair in his assessments... he just says the things that we don't want to think about, let alone hear... namely how bad the bears really are/could-be.

he loves the cubs and as such tends to have a pretty solid repetoire of thoughts about them... hockey? he's probably on the bandwagon and dropping some old hawks references cuz he's an old dude, but yeah. whatever.

basically, during football season if i notice that hub is on in place of loho or doing a weekend show sometimes... i'm going to click him on. i think he's got a good pace to his shows and even though i can see how people would think he's being smarmy with callers, hub does know football really damn well, so that is going to bleed through with the callers.

sorry for the tl;dr nature of this post, however, i had to break it down and by process of elimination i've got hub as the winrar.

1) Jay Podium....hands down.
2) Me (not the me show) Fuck all ya all! :P

Seriously, I might be alone, but I really like Matt Abbatacola solo. I think he does a fine job.
Goff is good, but overrated IMO. I repeat....overrated as far as the board's expectations go, not bad.

I like LoHo, except for when he tries to be Bernsie. I like when LoHo talks pop culture and stuff, but I don't like when he gets on his high horse about people wearing jerseys and things like that. Bernsie solo is good. Boers solo is weird and gay....come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I ever heard Boers solo.

I almost cannot listen to Hub...too nasaly. That is why I cannot listen to myself. :(
At least Hub knows his stuff though. I have no clue what I'm talking about ever.
Speaking of which, I will be back on a radio thing at WIIT next week. Live stream finally working again. 8) Good for me and Richfarmsystem....bad for everyone else.

Is that why he insisted Chad Hutchinson would be the starter a couple days before he was cut?

If you really think about it, Larry, drink and Goff are the only ones that go solo at the SCORE. All of the other hosts are partnered up. There must be a reason for this. Any guesses? Drink and Goff were once partners and Mitch blew that up leaving them both bitter about it. They felt they were destined to be the next "Jiggs and North" with a B&B style. Remember when North said he invented black and white partners in sports talk TV/radio?

You've got to be some sort of performance artist, Kirk. Have to be. Only 5% of "football experts" know more than him? He has good inside info sources? HE IS OBJECTIVE?

I enjoy reading most of the stuff here, but holy Christ am I stunned at some of the stupid crap guys like you and beardown post. You like Hub, great - but using that supporting statement full of fail is about as smart as dialing 411 when you need info.

Gah!

Hub is a show host who is only on the air once or twice a week. Hes not a reporter. Reporters "break stories" not show hosts. Furthermore, reporters hardly "break stories" anymore either in the internet age...its more like who reads it on line first.

What the hell would it matter to have insiders if you're not breaking news?

Hub's primary job is running a news magazine and internet site. His main job is as a reporter of information. It certainly isn't analysis, or at least I sincerely hope it's not.

I couldn't care less if Hub breaks stories or not. I enjoy his analysis. He knows X's & O's better than any nedia guy in Chicago, & he has a pretty good understanding about player technique & player evaluation too. List all the Score guys in order of football acumen & I'm not sure he isn't at the top. Zach? LoHo? Doug? Hamp? Les? Mully? Hanley? Mac? Meat? Berns? Boers? Goff? Drinkey? No. Doug is by the far the most entertaining though.
Hub is one of my favorite Liberals.
