Matt something tells me you wouldn't mind if the Bears disappeared. I'm also a Cub fan and I'm no where near as pessimistic as you are.

Low expectations, my friend. If Sunday rolls around and they lose as I expect, I'll be disappointed, but not surprised. You'll be crushed. Conversely, if the Bears manage to win, I'll be ecstatic and surprised, whereas you'll merely be relieved. Expecting the best for the Bears is not only foolish, it's a proven loser. Let's not forget they pounded the Panthers last year, only to get humiliated in the playoffs; a Chicago team setting their fans up for the nut-shot is not something new, and I have every reason to believe this is another instance of that.

Quote:
Why do you get so angry if you already expect them to lose?

I'm still pretty pissed about that Packers game. I'll never fully forgive this team for that. Remember when the Cubs jerkoff players got Steve Stone canned in '03? That's about how I'll feel about that loss if it turns out to be Favre's last game. You get one, and only one, chance to beat the biggest villian in your franchise's last 2 decades in his last game, and these sorry sacks of shit couldn't even get up for the game.

Quote:
Most people are disappointed because they expect a certain team to win. Would you feel better if they were 4-12? Probably not because they wouldn't be bad enough to get the 1st pick in the draft. Get off the ledge my friend. Everything will be fine. Enjoy this SB run.

Even a SB run is a risky proposition. Let me ask you this, and its a question I've been meaning to pose to the board. Would you rather:

1. Bears go to SB, get annihilated
2. Bears miss SB

It's a close call, in my mind. I'd really hate to see the beloved humiliated in the SB; I'd dare say I'd hate it more than that Packers loss. ;) My feeling is that, were the Bear to make it to the SB, their chances of getting stomped by 2+ touchdowns would be something like 75-25. The only way this miserable team makes it to the SB is if the opponents are even more miserable than the Bears; but that comes back to bite you.

Interesting question, but I will have to suspect that most Bear fan would have to choose option #1, considering their recent drought. Afterall, actually getting to the Super Bowl is something that this city hasn't seen in quite some time...

1) Seahawks making a last minute trade for Steve Smith
2) Hall Mark announces they will do their version of New Years eve in mid January
3) Jeremy Stevens holding onto the ball in the red zone
4) Lovie Smith panicking and talking into his headset for the first time this year.
5) Crosswind of >15 MPH.

Translation

1) Pass defense as they will focus on SA
2) Grossman
3) Stevens can be a game breaker and didn't play in the first game
4) Inability for coaching staff to adapt
5) Consistent kicking all year dooms us when we need it most

You are miserable at 13-3?

No, but it also doesn't mean you're great, as Jauron's team proved. This team was comparable to that team, but I think that it has really started a downward trend. Unlike years past, this defense is simply not any good. I know that for some reason people think they're going to be the great defense we saw early in the season once the playoffs roll around, but I don't see it. For whatever reason, this defense is very mediocre now.

Quote:
If you paid attention to the first Carolina game last year you should have been concerned. Steve Smith had about 15 receptions for 170 yards but didn't get in the endzone. The Bears didn't shut him down and that's why they lost.

If you paid attention to the Lions, Packers, or Bucs game, you should be concerned about this team. The Bears have looked bad against bad competition for a considerable stretch of time. Also, remember how the Bears stopped the Seahawks the first go-around. They got tons of pressure on Hasselbeck, for one; I just don't see that happening again.

I was thinking about this after I posted it; when was the last time a Chicago team went to a championship game and lost? There's nothing to really compare it to for most of us. Still, every time I've ever watched the World Series, Superbowl, or NBA Finals, I always thought to myself how bad it would suck to be a fan of the losing team. The stain of a SB loss is something I'd really hate to see on the Bears.

Not really a Chicago team but the '05 Illini lost in the NCAA Championship and that sucked.

For the record, I'm for going to the SB and getting annihilated and I suspect it will happen this year.

I'm not so sure that the Bears would be "stained" if they made it to the Super Bowl and got pasted. I'm not so sure that any team is "stained" if they lose the Championship game, unless something ridiculous happens (thinking along the lines of Buckner-esque travesties).

Something tells me, though, that you would probably get over this "embarrassment"...

I really don't believe the defense was trying in those games.

That's nothing but an excuse, to ignore the reality of the situation. We Bears fans make this excuse every year, and then when the playoffs roll around, they get exposed, and we're somehow baffled. They're not slacking, they're just prone to giving up big chunks of yards.

Quote:
Didn't they hold the Bucs and Lions to like 50 yards in the 1st half of both games? Didn't the offense put up a lot of points?

Bottom line is that they should have soundly beaten both teams, and they barely eked out a victory in each game. They're limping in, and that is seldom an auspicious sign.

Quote:
Isn't this the same Seahawks team the offense carved up in the regular season?

Like the Panthers last season.

Quote:
Isn't this same defense now missing key players?

Bears or Seahawks? ;)

Quote:
Don't the Bears have a running game now unlike the beginning of the season?

Hey, they rushed very well against the Seahawks last go-around. Don't expect much higher than the 135 yards and 2 touchdowns they got last time. Do expect less than the 235 yards & 2 touchdowns Grossman put up last time. No interceptions last time either; don't bet the farm on a repeat performance there.

Your threads would be depressing if they weren't so obviously wrong. Take the Seahawks with the money line and tell us about it on Monday morning.

If I was a gambler, I surely would. I'm so very cheap, though; I wouldn't bet a Lennox Lewis v. Dustin Diamond ticket.

I don't think every team is better than the Bears; I think every playoff team is. And that is based on the fact that the Bears were at the level of the NFC's worst teams at the end of the season.

Are we basing that off of the last 4 games, 3 of which the Bears won even though they played badly, or just the final game on NYE?

The last 4. You say they won "even though" they played badly, but my point is that they played badly. What reason does anyone have to think they're suddenly going to reverse that trend and play well? They eked past 3 garbage teams, and when they had to play a team that was having moderate success, they got crushed at, at home. In the last 4 weeks, they were consistently bad on both sides of the line. Conclusion: they're in a long-term trend (1/4 the season) of bad, bad play.

I know, I know: the Seahawks suck. That's no great consolation for me.

Oh, and Seattle sucks.

Nah, I was just using the patented Angelo TechniqueTM.

Do the Seahawks suck? Yes they do.

Are the Seahawks still capable of shaming the beloved at home? Yes they are.

Do I think the Bears' line-play will be better on either side of the ball? No I don't.

speaking of global warming from gd's earlier post....

i've been thinking about that a lot lately. i might do some weird al yankovic type songs about impending global disaster set to Christmas music.....

- It's beginning to look like global warming,
- because there is no snow.
- It's 65 outside and it's January 9......

don't steal my idea....

then get a little blue as well....

- My nuts, resting, upon her chest.....

don't steal my idea....

The obvious line for global warming is "do they know its christmastime at all?"

Low expectations, my friend. If Sunday rolls around and they lose as I expect, I'll be disappointed, but not surprised. You'll be crushed. Conversely, if the Bears manage to win, I'll be ecstatic and surprised, whereas you'll merely be relieved.

But being that you have stated that you are a fan and that you WANT them to win, you've got yourself into a failure-proof argument, and are therefore a pansy and a weasel. Because if they do in fact win, you get to celebrate with everyone because you've stated you're a fan, and additionally, if they lose, you'll be able to state that you predicted the loss and will inevitably remind all of us here of just how correct you were and I'm sure take great pleasure and pride in doing so.

Also, even if Rex does lay an egg (as he could easily do), that is no garauntee of a Bears loss. Peyton Manning has thrown 5 interceptions in two playoff games, and Tom Brady needed over 50 attempts to not even crack 300 yards while throwing three picks in the process against the Chargers, and both of those players are sure-fire Hall of Famers that managed to do enough to get their teams to the next round.

A failure-proof argument? It's just the outlook I'm taking; I'm hoping for the best while expecting the worst. Prudent, given this team's performance. The hilarious degree to which you're bothered by my rationale is entertaining, however. Keep it coming.

Quote:

So, you're telling me I should pick the Bears based on the fact that I'm a Bears fan? Are you even remotely aware of how inane that is? I'll never take pleasure nor pride in a Bears loss; however, if I'm realistic about the Bears and temper my expectations, I wont be nearly as disappointed as I would be when they lose. If I was one of those people who thought the Bears would walk today, I'd be mighty uneasy; as it is, I think they'll lose next week, and was just happy they managed to pull this one off.

Of course. Shit happens. I understand that. I was fully aware when I made my pick that I could possibly be wrong. Rex performed better than expected, and proved my prediction wrong. He could perform *down* to my expectations next week, and the Bears could still prove me wrong by having some great defensive effort or something. But the fact remains I have no rational basis to believe they will. I'll be damned if I get burned by hope again with this squad.

Guys, my biggest worry is the Hurricane Katrina fluff stories that will plague the sports world if New Orleans gets to the Super Bowl. If the Bears lose, you guys can update me on who wins the big one because I won't be watching.

Why be a fan if you do not want to get caught up in unrealistic expectations.

You should spend your sundays in the fall waking up, eating a big bowl of plain yogurt and reading the sunday paper all day if you are that disappoinment-averse.

Why be a fan if you want to get caught up in unrealistic expectations? I don't see how the two are related frankly. The fact is, at this point, I have no choice but to be a Bears fan; loving the Bears is like loving my family. But even though you love your family, you still notice their weaknesses.

I prefer to simply be realistic. I'm also looking forward to the Cubs season; doesn't mean I think they'll go to the WS.
