I can only guess a few of you have run into him, but there had to be a moment you remembered about Ronnie (Broadcasting, Talking or Playing) Tossing 2 out.

1. He was on the air with Judd and someone sent up Brownies. Judd, starts telling Ronnie how good the brownies look and Ronnie kind of shrugs it off. Judd comes back to the brownies after tasting one 'Ron, you gotta try these" Ron says 'No thanks", a few minutes go by and Judd says one more time 'Ron, just try these"...Ronnie starts laughing now and says "Judd, I can't eat that..."...Judd then gives you his best Homer "DOH!"

2. 5 years ago. It was one of those game or 2 after opening day in May. 40 degrees, nobody there whan the gates opened. So of course I went and brought the neice and nephew as they dont know any better. I go to take a piss and only a few people in the "Trough Room". Ronnie on the radio, Pat asking how the winter was and Ron gets into the details of his spleen operation! He explains that due to his other diseases, they didn't want to totally knock him out, so he was kinda awake during the operation and described how the blood was going down the tune and then he saw the removal of the spleen. Everyone int he bathroom was giving the 'Ewwwwww" and Pat jumps in with a laughing "Thanks for the description...."

Did they let you out of the house without your helmet on?

Probably not. He also had to wear water wings in case he had the soup.

I understand. But if all of the non funny stuff was deleted right away, nobody would have over 2000 posts here.

well as i said in one of the plethora of other threads, my ronny story comes courtesy of my friend joe's dad... giant white sox fan. the guy ended up hating my guts (namely cuz this was one of those friends who had strict parents, so he had "kuzma time" where he set all the clocks in the house back 5-7 minutes or something outrageous so he could make curfew) cuz i was the excuse friend. using my good name as a buffer to get out of the house and do nefarious things, hanging out with jim was a cover for anything ranging from wanton sexual debauchery with a less than prestigious lady all the way to Q-O fridays. eventually i got burned when he was high at church on a saturday night and to steal a line from the meet the parents movies, i was out of the circle of trust.

anyways, joe's dad is a whitesox lifer. also he was coming up through juniors for the late 60s/early 70s boston bruins before someone's skate got caught behind his right knee and did a clean sweep of all ligaments and tendons, thus ending his potentially-promising career. this would explain the presence of signed pucks from just about everyone who played on those quality bruins teams of the epoch... and wow i'm getting away from teh subject at hand.

they go to one of those places akin to portillos where you walk in, order, then seat yourselves and go get the food when your order is up. so he and his wife go get in line, and he has to take a piss. he comes out and who does he see but recent-ex-whitesock ron santo hitting on his wife, even despite the presence of a wedding ring. joe's dad is big with the number two, as his ultimatums love to come in the form of "one of two things is going to happen here" and thus the ultimatum was delivered to ron santo:

"ron, even though you played for the sox for one year you're still a fucking cub and that doesn't get you any special favors for me. so now we're at a point where one of two things is going to happen here: 1) you're going to turn around and walk away, effectively fucking off., or 2) you're going to hear two sounds: 1) the sound of my fist hitting your face and 2) the sound of you hitting the floor. choose wisely"

i believe santo told him to go fuck himself and walked away muttering more insults. i think according to the legend joe's dad then told him to go fuck off and why not click his heels on the way out.

so when i hear the tales of ron being a world class douche back in the day it makes sense. also, didn't his diabeetus really swell up and take bodily appendages because he didn't take care of it in his halcyon days of yout? regardless, the iron shiek put him in a camel clutch and made him humble, and by the time he got to the cubs booth he developed his lovable leper persona where he'd become the butt of many jokes and "always smile with us" as everyone ripped on him for being a veritable mascot buffoon. whether it was jumping up and burning his toupee on a roof-mounted space heater, having a hemophiliac moment where his lip wouldn't stop bleeding so the tv guys had to focus in on him and make fun of the tape he used to cover the gash, or whatever means of highlighting his overall ineptitude as not just a broadcaster, but a once-proud human being, he found his niche became instantly beloved amongst the masses of cubs fans (the mention during tranny of placing a faded flexfit cubs hat with a rose at the corner of clark and addison was touching) and ron did a brilliant job of putting his old image to bed with teh fandom.

i reckon he was always beloved as a player cuz he was always a borderline/HOF player who provided some excitement during many a lean year, and he's a cub original... in that regard, i'm sure he will be missed. it's kind of like youppi dying, that is, if youppi did a post-dick-butkus cheerleader gig in the expos booth back in the late 80s/90s.

so when is the brew-n-view on southport going to have a 24hr marathon of this old cub in honor of our fallen hero?

There's another brew-n-view other than the old Vic Theater one?

oh well maybe i'm mixing it up... i knew it was around the area on some street that started with an S. hey look, a capital leader.... is that legible enough?

btw, my post-e.e.cummingsesque lack of punctuation, grammar, and veritably-handwritten illegibility is essentially a low-level of encryption that ensures that only those who read at a 6th-grade-level or higher can understand my posts. i'd call it idiot repellant, but then again i might make some enemick before the 2 board outings i've got on the horizon. you know how horizons are: if you don't tread carefully the roof might collapse on you =D

I never typed that I don't care, plus that would be untrue.
I typed that I am well aware of the great pumpkins pudness...but, thanks for making spanky click a smiley.

eh well i could be off... i was poking fun at the fact that whenever there's a corgan/pumpkins thread people up and say "i have to wait and see what doug says about this" so in my head you became the smashing pumpkins expert.

i think i'm going to go make a tribute thread to that tribute thread about a 10 year tribute to something that never went away in a fit of zeitgeist (available in 16 different versions: THANK YOU TRENT REZNOR!)

on topic; oh and ronny.... you know, um.... yeah. the brant brown moment was duly hilarious and did entertain me... though he more annoyed me cuz i really like pat hughes' call and he was just kind of there. and i confess to my uncle and i having running pat-n-ron impressions when we'd be killing time @ wrigley before first pitch. he will be missed in that regard, although i am quite excited to potentially hear a quality color man alongside pat hughes. too bad captain sanctimony playgirl stud steve stone seemed like he burned his bridges there, cuz i liked it when he was with pat hughes. pat would paint the picture and steve would tell you why it was painted.

My grandmother was talking about Ron Santo and I interrupted her to say "He's got no feet." It felt bad.

I would accept pumpkins expert. It's probably safe to say I pay more attention to them than anyone else here.

I'm waiting for the NIN "We're Back" tour...should be about 5 years from now. :)
