Just remember who told you from day one that Ricketts was a bum & that he could afford to buy the Cubs but couldn't afford to own them.

The Cubs are in talks with free agent Brandon Webb, sources told AOL Fanhouse's Ed Price.

:? Maybe 1 year worth like 500k with a ton of incentives based on IP and performance? Blah.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Cubs and Nationals "are stepping up" their pursuit of free agent right-hander Brandon Webb.
Fantasy spin: Other teams have expressed interest, but the Nats and Cubs are both being aggressive and have the resources to get a deal done. Webb hasn't pitched in a major league game since the first week of the 2009 season because of shoulder issues, but he's displayed improved velocity in recent throwing sessions. He should be able to score an incentive-laden one-year deal.

So you are telling me that Ricketts is about to lose out on a bidding war to the Expos? Got it.

When you'll have gone two years without pitching, you don't have "shoulder issues" so much as you just don't have a shoulder.

The Rule 5 draft is this coming Thursday I believe. This is where I think the cubs will do the majority of their off season work....unfortunately.

Actually Ricketts is trying to revolutionize scouting by hiring a staff of scientists who are engaging in advance gene analysis of the offspring of some of baseball's immortals to try and identify and sign cost effective HOF caliber talent. The public has only been told that the team is emphasiszing the "farm system" but in reality, this 21st century cutting edge research plan is well underway.

Insiders say the research is "breathtaking".

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Chicago Cubs will hire Mark Riggins as their pitching coach on Monday, according to a major league source.

ESPNChicago.com Cubs blog

Cubs blog The latest news and notes on the Cubs. Blog

Riggins, formerly the Cubs' minor league pitching coordinator, replaces Larry Rothschild, who left to become the New York Yankees pitching coach in November after nine years in that position with the Cubs.

Riggins, 53, joined the Cubs system in 2008 after 29 years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He held a variety of positions with St. Louis, including his only stint as a major league pitching coach, in 1995, Joe Torre's last season as Cardinals manager.

Bullpen coach Lester Strode was also under consideration for the position. Strode will return to the same position for next season.

Bruce Levine covers baseball for ESPNChicago.com and ESPN 1000.

But what about the weed farming bullpen catcher? Is he back or is he sticking to his agricultural duties?

Yankees Brian Cashman said his team is interested in bringing Kerry Wood back as a setup man, but they "won't compete with closer money."
Wood was fantastic down the stretch for the Yankees, posting a 1.23 ERA and 0.69 WHIP in 26 innings. That came after an unimpressive run in Cleveland, though, so it's unclear if anyone would be willing to offer him a ninth inning job. The Cubs are reportedly interested in bringing him back, but that would also be as a setup man. Dec. 6

The homer in me is all about bringing him back. I couldn't justify spending any sort of money on him though at this point in his career. Maybe if he took a ridiculous hometown discount...Those numbers for the 26 games are slightly deceiving as he had a lowish BABIP and a really high walk rate.

If we did bring him back, I'd want it strictly as a 7th/8th inning type guy which would make the move of Cashner to the rotation easier.

Edit for Stats: He threw 26 innings on the Yankees, with the 1.23 ERA, but his BABIP was .236 so he was lucky so have such a good era considering he walked 29 guys during that time. Very marmol-ish there

Hendry talking to Boras about Carlos Pena. You've heard of spider rape. Get ready for bully rape.

Well, he's a career .241 hitter but his last two seasons are .227 and .196. Will a move to the NL improve that? I wouldn't mind him for a reasonable price, but Boras-Hendry negotiations don't sound promising to me.

You don't want Peña for 5 years, $70M? Shame. :(

Only if he gets a no trade.

I read somewhere that the Cubs had some talks with the Dodgers about Loney. Not alot of power but I think I would rather have him over the Pena/Cantu pu pu platter

Hendry has interest in the good LaRoche, Adam. Nothing looks better in blue pinstripes than an ex pirate apparently.

Yahoo has this scrolling update thing from the Winter Meetings. Its got some interesting rumors going on it and seems to be updating quite often. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_le ... mlb-292599
