Ryan Theriot was on Waddle and Silvy yesterday
he said the Cubs weren't willing to talk about his contract offer AT ALL....not negotiate, but TALK...they wouldnt even TALK...they wouldnt even let Theriot talk...here was a high character guy who gave them so much from 06-09 and they treated him like that
what? i think theriot is making 2.5 mil this year, so odds are he wants to bump that up and double that... and for what? what's this so much he gave them?
he hit .266 in his first year and stole bases pretty well... then he had his career year in 07... .307/1/38/22 steals... but he got caught stealing 13 times. he took ~70 walks and had an OBP of .387. after that, i remember in 08 he was hitting something like .320 when he discovered his warning track power and started swinging from his heels, and all of a sudden his average plummets he stops walking (~50/90 on walks/K) the OBP plummets to .343 and his grand power totals? 7/54. granted those 7 homeruns are nearly half of his major league totals.
from there, he didn't start taking walks again until he got traded to the dodgers... he threw up OBPs of .320 in his last season and a half with the cubs, and sure he was 22/28 BB/K in 54 games with the dodgers, but he hit around .220.
so the guy is already making 2.5mil and wants to get bumped up to ~4-5mil/year prolly, and for what? for a punch and judy hitter who stopped being any sort of a viable pest once he decided that he wanted to swing for the warning tracks? huh? and his defense is nothing special.... the term "league average" comes to mind.
i'm glad they got something for him, even if it's a year-plus of blake dewitt (at least i think he's under contract for this year)... you're not losing much, other than another "homegrown" guy who was nothing special whatsoever... and if the cubs are as cash-strapped as everyone says they are, why the hell would you give even a medium term deal to someone who's not part of the solution?
quoteth jimmy piersall "bad bad bad bad bad bad bad"
obviously you have a multy agenda, sir whistler... i hate jim hendry's gm-ing skills, or the lack thereof, as well. we can go back to giving up ricky nolasco (who is neurotic and doesn't like to walk people, but doesn't seem to mind getting hit)... hendry has made dumb trade after dumb trade compounded with the dumb signings and he was elevated from a position where he oversaw the cubs' shit farm system... he needs to go. but claiming the theriot case is that of an irrational untrustworthy bully who wouldn't show any good faith to a cubs cornerstone? mult please.
