a lot of people made fun of him, and in his broadcasts, rightfully so. but i always liked him. he was harmless.

sad. i'll miss hearing his blubbery on the broadcasts. i won't miss his pining for the HOF. but now, he'll probably get in.

Sad to see him go. I admire his fighting spirit. I will NOT miss him being the face of Cub nation, nor will I miss his broadcasts. If ever the phrase..."REST in peace" meant anything....it apply here. R.I.P. Ronnie.

Johnny McDonough, telling a story this morning on M & H

Ron calls him. Says for John to hold on while he does something else. McDonough hears Ron talking to him in the background, but not directly into the phone. A few minutes later McDonough hears Ronnie swearing, then the TV clicks off and Ron picks up the phone and says he was talking into the TV remote!

The guy loved his team like no other broadcaster I know. That's for sure. RIP Ronny.

yes to all of the above. I'm sad for his family but 2011 will be the first season I try to listen to the Cubs on the radio full time again. I don't care who they hire.

If it's Dave Otto, that's not much of an upgrade.

+1
He may have been a bad broadcaster but he was a damn fine player and advocate for Juvenile diabetes .His whining about hte HOF kept him out so it will be a bittersweet day when he is let in.

I honestly couldn't wait until Santo retired from the broadcast booth. But now I find myself wishing to hear him continue ribbing Pat over his sweaters.

Who replaces Ronnie in the booth?

Andy Masur?
Mark Grace?
Dave Otto?
Dan Plesac?
Rick Sutcliffe?

I'd imagine other than Masur, the job is below Grace, Plesac and Sutcliffe.

Chicago radio > Phoenix television, but I think Gracie fancies himself a little too telegenic for mere radio sportscasting.

The ideal replacement for Santo is Murph. Yeah, that's right. Murph. With Santo, the analysis was more just about "voice of the fan" than "voice of the ex-jock," so it's not like the seat requires a decorated athlete, or any athlete for that matter. Murph can give you all the cheerleading that Santo gave us, even though he won't be quite as warm and fuzzy. A

With all of your usual meatball thoughts, it's sometimes hard to tell if you are joking.

Half-joking. All I expect Ricketts to come up with is Cubs Legend Ben Grieve, so at least another groaning 1969er would be something.

I was reading the comments section in some Santo memorial piece, and came across this gem. I think it may be Whistler.

Quote:
Since Santo joined the radio booth in 1990, the Cubs have enjoyed nothing but their greatest success at the box office, in the public eye, and in every aspect financially. This success was originally attributed to Harry Carey and Sammy Sosa, but they are both long gone, and the incredible success has continued.
You will now see a gradual decline in the popularity of the Cubs, now that Santo is no longer with them.
