I have been involved with JDRF for 15 years and had dealings with Ron and I can say this. Good guy, sincere guy and really cared about the kids he helped raise money for. Did he make mistakes in his life which led to his health issues, yes, did he use himself as a example to the people he spoke to at our events, yes.

Ron Santo would fly 15-20 kids a year to AZ to his ranch so they could ride his horses or just spend time with them and talk about that nasty disease. He also paid for kids insulin, syringes, glucose meters and the strips for those who couldn't afford it. So it easy to rip him for his personal choices that led to his health issues, but that was his choice, he has no one to answer to for those choices but himself and considering he was a type 1 diabetic and living to 70, he must have done something right. I consider myself lucky for knowing the guy the little bit I did. That is all I have to say about this.

The figure I heard from the JDRF guy interviewed on 'GN: 60 million since Santo's involvement.

I have a friend who's involved internationally with Diabetes charities and research. They are all grateful for what Santo has done for it.

ANd I question the integrity of all these JDRF people that go out of their way to whine like 2 year olds to Bernstein. If there really are people that say anything to Bernstein who has made no secret of his hate for Santo. We know Terry hates him because he didn't bow to him at Mike Murphy's wedding but why does Bernstein hate him so much?

It really is a stupid thing to do. From a different thread, folks in that nape of the neck are not real good at following the protocol for funeral processions. That is going to be one huge traffice jam w/ the occasional accident thrown in for good measure. I really hope that folks don't turn out in droves to be a part of this, but they probably will.

At work today someone made a Ron Santo joke and I have to admit I laughed. They didn't realize I was standing there and looked shocked and I laughed harder than either of them and it was not only a Ron Santo joke but extremely un PC.

I went to the game in 2003 (final game of the regular season) where Santo's #10 was retired and hung on the left field pole. The Cubs had just clinched the day before, so the 3rd row tickets I had that day went from being highly desireable and sought after (having the possibility of involving a deciding game) to far less so (with most starters not playing). However, I look back at that game now, as one with real significance. I'm glad I was there to hear Ron speak to the crowd and express his feelings. I thought then, that his days were numbered and I am surprised he lived another 7 years. I'm sure that broadcasting games and staying involved with the ballclub not only allowed him to survive a lot longer. It gave him joy and a reason and purpose to go on. He may have lost a bit of the fastball as a broadcaster, but his passion and spirit will surely be missed.

the last few posts in this thread have got me thinking: if cubbiegirlshamus and elmhurst steve were to reproduce what would the resulting offspring be like?

i'm thinking it would be some sort of a legendary monster that lurks in the shadows of wrigley; surviving off of rats, concession scraps, and hope. all of the ground crew would know about it, and when they hear the odd screams of terror in the distance they'd all look at each other and pray to whatever god/s they believe in. eventually, an extermination team comprised of sox fans would descend upon the stadium to put it out of its misery, however, no carcass would be found. everyone would speculate that after all of the poison shot in its direction that nothing could possibly survive such an onslaught of toxic chemicals, or that it'd at least get the message and thusly crawl back off to its secret lair, dying in solitude next to its mark grace posters.

however, during the season when the last few remaining people are locking up the ballpark, as legend has it if you stop what you're doing and focus in on the silence and ubiquitous nothingness, you can hear the faint clanking of badly groomed fingernails hitting computer keys. if you focus a little harder the faint smells of peanut butter, crisco, two buck chuck, and body odor become prevalent. it's around this time that the staff remembers that they have family at home and it's best for all parties involved to just pretend they never heard or smelled anything.
