Is this considered one of the 4 moves?

i honestly feel this is an offseason where Bully has no real direction

his bully mindset has been tempered by the bad contracts, restricted budget, and his bad reputation...he doesn't really feel in control right now

he is now trying to adapt to this new circumstance but he doesn't really know how

Like I said in the hot stove thread, Pena for 1 year is fine. No real complaints. Just make sure that money doesn't contribute to possibly being out of the Gonzalez/Fielder sweepstakes next year.

I think Ricketts has already taken care of that.

Ramirez's, Fukudome's and Silva's contracts come off the books after this year. So we'll definitely have more resources available

You would hope that Hendry would make a move for one of those guys but I see AGone going to the Red Sox. Good news is that the Yankees already have Texeira and the Angels have Morales, so they will probably be bidding against the Mets for Fielder.

Jerry shelling out 7-8 years at $20M per? Doesn't sound like something Jerry does.

Until you consider picking up the Peavy and Rios contracts...and consider that Jerry hates the Cubs. He will spend an extra few million a year over Rios' contract numbers to pick up a hitter like Fielder I'd imagine.

Rios makes $12M a year.

You are assuming that Ricketts doesn't just pocket that money. The years of the Cubs with a 100+M dollar payroll are over kids. I would guess that within the next 5 to 10 years you will see the Cubs settle into being somewhere between the 15th to 20th highest payroll year in and year out.

You're right Phil. Maybe I'm being crazy, but I see Tom trying to keep the payroll somewhere in the 100 million dollar vicinity. Which would put us around 10th in baseball.

I think a few of the beat writers have said that they've heard payroll in the $120-130M range. They already have 100M committed to like 9 players, so it will be higher.

Right, I'm talking 3-4 years down the road after the Soriano/Zambrano etc deals come off.

Yes for this year. I am talking about long term once all of the bad contracts from the TribCo go away I doubt you will be seeing many lavish spending sprees. Especially after Ricketts got pantsed in his proposal for tax revenue and the fact that ballpark revenue will be down next year with whistler finally getting his wish for plenty of good seats still available to see the Cubs play the Pirates in a battle for 5th place in the central next year.

Yeah, I think it depends upon their revenue situation at that time which may or may not include retail/shopping outlets in Wrigleyville. Who the hell knows? My hope is that there is a new GM at that time anyway who can take a smaller payroll and spend it efficiently.

Then you better start hoping for bully Hendry to have another grabber otherwise I don't think he is going anywhere.

That would mean Ricketts is stupid enough to re-sign him? Nah. yeah.

The Pena signing will surely change their 4th place 19 games out 2011 season to 4th place 17 games out.

Hendry's a joke. The guy has zero creativity. Again he takes the easy way out by writing a fuckin check to a retread veteran.

Yeah, what's the big deal? One year deal, that's gonna cost more per year, if you'll pardon the expression, than a 3 year deal will. $10 sounds really fucking high to me though. I expect over 30 fuckin home runs and well over 100 RBI for that kind of money

What was your suggestion?

The Cubs aren't going to win anything next season so it's a good time to take a couple chances and try to find some diamonds in the rough. Players who were once highly regarded but for whatever reason isn't working out with their current teams. Players like Alex Gordon, Chris Davis, Brandon Wood, Daric Barton, Joba Chamberlian, Andrew Miller, Homer Bailey and Kyle Kendrick. These are all players who are 'buy low' candidates but are still young enough to have HUGE upsides.

Hendry has to stop trying to upgrade the team by signing free agents and start doing some serious scouting to find talented players in other organizations who can help the team when they are ready to win.

You should. I said in another thread if Kenny Williams gave $10mil to a guy that hit less than 30HR and under .200 last year Cubs fans would be all over it.

Couldn't the Cubs get similar production from Micah Hoffpauir at a much lower price? Surely he could hit about .200 and hit 20-25 home runs in a full season. Am I wrong? I'm not trying to be a meatball here. This just seems like wasted money to me. Especially in a season where you will not be competing for anything.
