Outside of the obvious difference in out of conference record, which is mostly because the NIU schedule was much harder, the NIU Huskies 2010 season is looking a lot like the 2008 Ball State Cardinals season.

I'm looking at most of the coaches mentioned here and they seem to have had a significant amount of experience at this level before being given their opportunity. Mahlzan has five years experience at this level.

Hey, whatever it takes to make yourself believe that Guz Malzahn is anxious to take a pay cut and become head coach at NIU.

The other thing is that more often than not being the head coach of a non-BCS team is a career dead end. Obviously some do well and move on but most of them end up being average for a while and eventually get fired and end up as an assistant again.

Mike Locksley actually is a pretty good example of this. He may actually have benefited from working his way up through the coordinator ranks and eventually making the immediate jump. Petrino is probably going to take that route.

If you coach at EMU, Kent State, etc. that is probably true since those are tough programs to turn around.

NIU was set up for success by Joe Novak. There is a good foundation here. So if you are a legitimately good coach then you don't have to do much to keep it going.

But there are a bunch of former MAC head coaches whose career didn't end in the MAC. Gary Pinkel, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Turner Gill, Brady Hoke (who is now being mentioned for BCS jobs), and now Jerry Kill.

I could list more, but these are just a few that come up off the top of my head.

At D1? That's more than Chip Kelly who had 2 years at the D1 level.

He was also 0-3 in the postseason.

Take away his three wins over 1-AA teams and he was 20-16 against 1-A teams.

You could of said the same about NIU in the Mid 90's. ANy program is capable of being turned around with the right coach. Look at Temple.

I agree, but NIU has a very solid foundation now. We were in the Big West and also independent for some of those years. Moving back to the MAC helped us.

Temple would have continued to flounder, dropped to 1-AA, or got rid of 1-A football all together if they stayed independent.

I seriously wonder about EMU though, they have a huge shadow cast over them with Michigan only a few miles away. I don't know if they will ever be able to lure enough talent over there to build something.

Who wouldn't want Urban Meyer. That guy has won at BGSU, Utah, and Florida. He also has two National Championships on his resume.

Everyone with an open coaching position will be knocking on his door.

If we are going to look at assistant coaches i think you have to look at him. The worst he can say is no and you move on. There will be plenty of candidates interested in our program.

I'm just wondering. Who would be your top 5 legitimate candidates?

I predict Ron Vanderlinden or Trent Miles.

Honestly, i don't follow 1-AA and lower at all to know what good head coaches are down there.

I certainly don't follow the careers of the assistants at this level either.

I have heard names such as Sam Pittman (who used to be at NIU), Matt Canada, (also used to be at NIU), PJ Fleck (not enough experience), and Scott Schafer (heard we aren't interested in him this time around) thrown around.

I like Mahlzan, Phil Fulmer (he is old, so i don't know how many head coaching opportunities he's going to get), and Jeff Bower.
