This is a huge game for the Ramblers. They won't have a chance to play many good teams and this is really the key winnable game against a higher ranked opponent. It also sets the stage for the entire conference schedule.

Glad to see Mulli giving the Ramblers some love today.

Is there a worse marketed team in this city than Loyola. UIC struck a tv deal and had a contract on a major radio station. Loyola gets lucky to be on Lakeshore TV network and is on a christian radio station.

Whitesall should have been on the Score this morning and WMVP in the mid days to drum up attention for this game and his team;s 7-0 record.

.

And even still you'd think that they could get all of their games on Lakeshore TV, not just some of them... I guess 1980's programming gets higher ratings...

Thanks for the Loyola info. It also looks like the Horizon league has a live online stream of the game. ESPN 3 will show it as well.

UIC struck that deal when they were good back in the mid 90s. they've sucked for 10 years...

They get on t.v. maybe twice a season nowadays.

Typical game with Butler. Loyola keeps it close but cannot win.

This really is the way Loyola plays it out every year. They'll lose their first 7 in conference, win 6 then lose the rest of the way for a slightly below .500 record.

Well they were able to hang with (5)Kansas St. today, but unfortunately couldn't beat them. I guess there is still some hope for this season...

another predictably bland season for a Whitesall team.

He better recruit better with that new athletic center.

CHICAGO -- Loylola fired men's basketball coach Jim Whitesell on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Whitesell went 109-106 overall and 50-70 in the Horizon League in his seven seasons with the Ramblers. A school spokesman said the school was planning an announcement later Monday afternoon.

A message left for Whitesell on his cell phone wasn't immediately returned.

The Ramblers opened this year 8-2 and were within a few baskets of defeating Butler and Kansas State, but couldn't sustain their efforts throughout the season. They finished 16-15 overall and 7-11 in conference.

This season was the first Loyola finished above .500 since 2006-2007. It also was the Ramblers' fourth consecutive conference losing season. Whitesell's greatest success came in 2006-2007 when his team was the first to win 20 games since 1985.

Whitesell was the third coach in the state fired in the past month. Bradley's Jim Les and Northern Illinois' Ricardo Patton were also released.

I don't really get this. Sure he has been below average in-conference, but he's brought in some decent recruits, and has won some games, I don't know of anything better out there that Loyola could bring in. Maybe the new AD has something to do with this because I remember that he got an extension from the previous AD last year or so...

I had a feeling it might be the end with a new AD and a new athletic facility. It's time for Loyola to make a splash with a hiring. I'd love to see a young assistant with a track record for recruiting who is looking to get his first big break...or maybe women's coach and former wolfpack and NU player Eric Simpson.

Either way, this is a way undervalued program. The campus looks amazing these days. There is an open pool of local talent from which to recruit. There is a significant upgrade in facilites including an on campus stadium. There is no reason they should not be top half of the Horizon every year...and that's not asking much.

But the majority of the updates to the campus have only been completed in the last 1-2 years, and to his credit he has brought in better recruits in that time. I don't know the lay of the Chicago high school basketball land, but I'd image that even the average players would have 20 schools better than Loyola to choose from; he did what he could with the resources available to him, and now that the 'arena seating' is about to be completed, he doesn't even get a chance to prove that he can recruit with it. He brought this school its first 20 win season in 20+ years. I think this sucks.

As for the future, I wonder how deep the new AD's Indiana ties are. It would be interesting if she could bring in an Indiana assistant coach, but is that what you'd really want? I want someone with Chicago ties, and I don't know how well Tom Crean and his staff did in Chicago.

I was a little suprised but the AD said that being on a one year contract would inhibit recruiting and she was not sufficiently pleased with him to extend him.

I'm comfortable with the move. On the good side, every single one of his players graduated, he had an above .500 record and he had 20 and 19 win seasons. On the bad side, he was below .500 4 of 7 years and was not particularly good in a very weak conference. In my opinion they pissed away the senior season of Schilb and Kuo, which could have been special but instead was just above average.

The truth is that he could be one of those coaches who is at a school 20 years if you are not results oriented. He ran a clean program, graduated players and was competitive. I think this AD wants some results.

You can always bring back Will Rey to coach.

Now that was exciting basketball
