Heard Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne today and of course the 2 Larry Carlton solos in the song are well known within guitar players circles.Got me wondering though, would he have been able to play something that difficult if it were necessary to also sing at the same time, and just who are the dudes or dudettes who can play a difficult lick and sing along simultaneously. My choice would be the more famous in death Nick Drake, by all accounts except for his last album, he would record in the studio the guitar and vocal parts at the same time, and some of his stuff seems crazy hard to play and keep time to, let alone sing over it. Who are your choices ?

Dave Mustaine, Alexi Laiho, and Claudio Sanchez impress me the most.

Insert JORR story about seeing Hendrix at the International Ampitheatre in 1969, and then hanging out with him on Rush Street until the following Tuesday.

Did JORR hang out with Van Lier back in the day?

Because Green Day hasnt done anything worthwhile since Dookie.

It's not all that hard to play a few power chords and sing, not that I don't like Green Day.
Someone that can play melodies and sing has a special talent. 8)

or scream and play 220bpm metal riffs...

If Billie Joe is on the list then Kurt Cobain is too.

Can Les Claypool be added to this list because even though he plays bass and sings, he plays some really crazy fucked up all over the place bass while singing.

No I will. Thanks.

Ke$ha is like drinking a handful of salt water when stranded at sea in a raft for weeks. You resist it for days upon days, but finally it breaks your will and you indulge....and it is glorious for about 2 minutes....and then.....

I did, but they were opening for Blink 182 so they looked phenomenal.

Billy Joe is talented, but when doing stuff live is way too "I"M GONNA SCREAM EVERYTHING EVEN IF I SANG IT GREAT ON THE ALBUM". At times it's almost like Billy Joe doing an Billy Joe impersonation.

This is a weird topic. Do they have to be good at both, or just good at one and do the other? Because many of the people listed here are awful singers.....

No, but Van Lier did introduce a mutual friend to Led Zeppelin so he could sell them weed and coke.

I agree. I've seen them a couple of times, the first was on the Dookie tour at Aragon, and that was probably the best live show I saw of them.

I've seen Green Day almost 10 times  . I was at the same Aragon show - that was good, I think we've discussed that here before.

They are what they are - simple fun rock. Well, what they were, before Broadway.

We have.

I think I'm at about 5, but as they've gotten bigger, I'd rather listen to the studio albums. I really like 21st Century Breakdown.

I think Eaglo said he was at that show too.

I actually prefer Am. Idiot to 21st Cent.
But I agree - they were a lot more fun in concert back in the day.

I think I'm gonna put the # of times I've seen them in the "embarrassing moment thread". Along with Blink, No Doubt, 311, more.....I like a lot of questionable bands.

My favorite Green Day is Kerplunk. I got it a few weeks after getting dookie and I have always enjoyed most.

Blink = bad, but I saw No Doubt before they got all poppy and they weren't bad, and 311 live has been outstanding both times I saw them.
