Dude, Cheap Trick is good. I've seen them a couple times.

Squeeze................yeah. You're on your own.

I saw Cheap Trick at Cubby Bear North about 10 years ago. They were outstanding. They were really good at Lollapalooza 96 too.

Squeeze was the opener...it was Ravinia. I wound up going for free with some friends of the family that had an extra ticket. My buddy Craig and I got ripped on Jager. That was the only redeeming quality of the entire night.

Wait, I forgot to contribute:

I've been holding on to this one -

Marilyn Manson at the Metro..............twice. He shoved water bottles and beer bottles up his ass, cut his chest open and demanded that the crowd spit into his wound, and then broke a beer bottle over his head. All 100% true and accurate.

Clutch opened for one of them though, so that was a bonus. 8)

Def Leoppard and Bryan Adams at Alexian Field :(

Another one of the ex-wife's brilliant ideas.

I saw No Doubt with the ex and 3 of her friends...actually was a good show.

the ex knew good music. can't really complain about that, except her need to spend $150 on Fleetwood Mac tickets multiple times.

uhmm...matchbox 20 in 2001 i think it was. it was free, because my sister worked at a radio station and she wanted someone to go with.

really strange and i felt unclean.

i only saw green day once but they were fine. i saw them at the electric factory in philly (the equivalent to the aragon here). fucking superdrag was their opener. worst act ever, and that's from a person who has seen dashboard confessional, pigface, spacehog, and fuel as openers.

Ironically enough, Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze is a guy who sings well while playing lead guitar. Doug could speak better as to how difficult it is to play the stuff he does while he's singing, but he does it.

being a trumpet player myself, i went and saw the cherry poppin' daddies a couple times. whether you care for their music or not, they do have one hell of a trumpet player. i also have seen the mighty blue kings several times, as well as big bad voodoo daddy and the royal crown revue. one of the best shows i have EVER seen regardless of musical genre is the Brian Setzer Orchestra. that big band is GOOD, some serious musicians up there.

edit: and speaking of brian setzer, he fits into the category of a pretty solid guitar player who can play and sing.

Soul Asylum? I think you're thinking of a different tour. This was Dave, Gin Blossoms and Neil Young. Young went on last that night. The place emptied out after DMB (myself included)

I am thinking of a different tour. I swear there was one around 96 that was the Gin Blossoms, Soul Asylum, and someone else...I could be smashing memories of bad shows together, that's always possible. I've only seen DMB twice, once at Alpine and once at Soldier Field, so I know it wasn't that tour.

I agree that Stevie Ray and Clapton aren't great singers. I think the point of the OP was "who plays most skillfully while also having sing at the same time".
Why do you think I mentioned J Mascis?

That's why I originally asked the question - do they have to be good at both? That's pretty rare.......

SD, I knew I worded the thread title badly  , you're spot on in that I meant it to mean who plays most skillfully while also having to sing at the same time. Thanks for clearing up the waters I muddied.

I have to put a disclaimer on that I find Geddy Lee's voice to be EXTREMELY annoying. Rush would be unreal if they had a lead singer.....

The thing about Geddy is that although he's extremely talented bass player, listen close to what he's playing when he sings. All of the complex licks are during musical breaks / bridges. When he's singing he's really just hovering around the root of the chord.

Ya know what, I guess I could say the same thing about J Mascis. Good point.

You know what the difference between J Mascis and every kid in a high school band is?

The kid in the HS band ends up with a career.

He plays the same chords every kid in a HS band plays. But then they go and get real jobs and keep making money.

Bad joke. :(
