Can't have a Mike North thread without my voice of reason . I agree with Scorehead. BUT, if North was on right now during the day on any station,I would listen to him over anybody.WHY? Blind loyalty,I guess. A little "Car Crash" mentality added in,too. The one thing about North,that is overlooked,when he entered the "arena",there was nobody who was working without a "filter" like Mike North. He said what was on his mind and it sure was refreshing compared to the PC_sports guys that were on the dial at the time. Sportsradio did not exist. He was a pioneer and put SportsRadio on the map,like it or not.

completely agree. It went down from there. I actually listened to North before I started listening to B&B and he was good. But success went to his head and he lost the partner that was good for him.

Fact of the matter is that North WAS a sports guy and when the SCORE first started, not only was it a new format, but North was a new personality. Jiggs and North made a good tandem. The new sports radio format was great for the sports fans like me. Kevin Matthews was getting old and there were no other alternatives.

So, North had a lot of positives going for him. Over time...he became WAYYY too full of himself. He thought of himself as something bigger than what he was; a hotdog selling sports fan. As time has dragged on...he has done nothing but become a complete laughing stock of his profession. Failure after failure after failure and the guy still thinks of himself as some type of talent, or showman, or expert, or entertainer, or mafia wannabe, or entrepreneur.....When all he really has turned in to is a failed-conceited has been who people laugh at.

Yes, he was listenable at one time....but that was a LONG time ago.

North became the cornerstone of the Score and redefined sports talk radio in this city. The Monsters was a must listen and one of two shows that were the golden age of the station.

I'm going to have to drag up one of my long winded posts on the history of the station because many of you have no backround in your criticism.

The man was given nothing. He created that place. He and the station both changed, neither for the better.

Mike was never satisfied with being what he was. It was a great characteristic in the beginning but it has also lead to his destruction.

I think gd's analysis is spot on. Mike North was the face of the Score in the early 90's. He went years working with Jiggetts and maintained the "I used to run a hot dog stand. . . now I'm lucky enough to have this show" attitude extremely effectively.

Tom Shaer (and Jim Memelo) in the morning was dull as wood - "Look Alive!" and McNeil and Boers were just finding themselves. By 6pm or so, they were off the air. It's unfortunate, but Mike fucked up a great thing. There was still a market for him on the Score and his ego got in the way.

"When you guys going 24 hours?" The most familiar refrain from those early SCORE days. It really DID suck when they went off the air at 6pm everyday. Back then it looked like they would never go 24 hours.

I remember Murph being on for like 30 minutes some days in the winter when the station would cut out early. Sometimes you could catch part of the broadcast of whatever Texas station they shared a frequency with back then. At that point it was all up to hoping that Chris Cross had something interesting happening on the Sports Huddle at that point.

I don't, and I'm guessing that's because I listened to more late-afternoon Score because of being a yute in school and whatnot.

A few things to consider
1. This is a Bears town, and Mike had Ditka, Payton -- and in a lesser vein -- Sayers on the show. I think Jiggs had some part in those connections taking place.
2. No competition. ESPN wasn't a competitor in the early North years.
3. Mike tried to bring a Sterns or Dahl flavor to the show: Steak and BJ Day, Jagbag. Some of the early versions of Jagbag were outright appointment radio, due to the vulgarity unleashed with the personal attacks. Once the purse strings were pulled -- live-feed displeasure by Ditka's patrons forced a rescaling of the bit -- the segment lost its heart.
When the variables changed, Mike lacked the vision to re-package the show as a profitable venture.
