it's very nice

I got tired of his bombastic news splashes in the offseason the last several years...from signing Daryl Ward in his hospital bed, to acting like he signs Babe Ruth with every signing he makes, not to mention the excessive, obtrusive flurry of trades and signings to create chaos and attention

it's like he was always out to get attention...just nice to see him silenced for once and be a normal GM

there is only one Brian Cashman

it's just nice to be able to concentrate on the sports of the season without having the bully come out and try to rock our worlds left and right

Ted Lilly was bullied into signing from the hospital bed, not Daryl Ward.

they were both signed at the same time when he was sick but im almost positive Lilly was signed by Hendry before Hendry landed in the hospital, and Randy Bush did the signing while Bully was in the hospital...but the phone calls to Ward and agreement with Ward happened while Hendry was in the hospital bed...this is how i recall it

There is nothing worse than a silent bully.

Any chance you can take after your hero Hendry and not be heard from much this year?

yeah, because the trade of milton bradley for carlos silva and the signing of marlon byrd just absolutely ROCKED OUR WORLDS last year!

and btw, didn't the bully pop up in a rather bullyesque fashion this year with the kerry wood press conference? while kerry claims it's not about the money, he sure was bullied into accepting a deal for peanuts and crackerjack because he really wanted to come "home" to the cubs. market value? "uhm kerry, we told you to get lost and go make some money a few years ago and they can barely afford my food bill on scouting trips, so we're not going to be able to offer you anything substansial...."

in the end, kerry wood came out looking like one of the game's great guys, as many of us always knew he was.

Byrd had a terrible second half. He is a good player though. He was one of the top CF last year in putouts and fielding%

Byrd is a nice player.....he hustles and plays the way you want a veteran player to play (smart-he throws to the right base, runs the bases well, etc..) in order to set a great example for younger players coming up in the organization. However, his power numbers are poor and he does not steal many bases, so he's got somewhat limited value.

And of course he is being paid like a "nice player"

Byrd really isn't breaking the bank for the Cubs. Out of all of the deals that Hendry has given out I don't think the Byrd contract stands out as terrible. He was pretty much the deciding factor in the Giants WS run when he gunned out Big Papi in the All Star game.

Yeah, that's one of the most reasonable contracts the Cubs have. Challenge yourself, Frank. Save your Cub hate for only the most deserving topics.

Key phrase there is "for the cubs"

This contract seems reasonable because they have so many other awful deals.

Fine, I'll bite. Name some other starting CFs that provide good defense, decent speed, and decent average with average to below average power. And a good clubhouse guy. For $5M per year.

Except that Pierre was brought in to leadoff and steal bases while Byrd was brought in to be a power threat in the middle of the lineup.

I don't think that anyone even Bully Hendry thought Byrd was going to be a consistent power threat. Juan Pierrs sucks at his job of stealing bases then by the way.
