This is a good trade by the Cubs and I'm finding it very difficult to believe Hendry pulled it off. Talk about giving up quantity over quality. It would be even better if he signs Garza to an extension.

I wonder if Hendry is now shopping the Big Dumbass.

Decent trade. No one wanted to trade Archer for a second tier pitcher.

No one knows whether Archer is going to be the real deal, Garza is a proven commodity. Hard as it is for me to believe it, I actually agree with Keyser for once regarding the Cubs.

2nd tier in AL East = #1 starter in NL Central

Solid move by Hendry, I can't believe Tampa didn't/couldn't get more for him.

He's between a 1 and a 2

No way he's a 3

And Randy Wells is not gonna be a perrenial 13-15 game winner.

He'll probably be out of baseball in a few years.

I'm hopeful that Garza will have a low three's ERA.

I strongly disagree with you on Randy Wells.

Randy Wells didnt pitch in the majors til he was 26

Not too many of those guys work out. I hope he does.

It just seemed from your two comments that you think Garza and Wells are similliar and I think thats pretty crazy.

I mean a 13-15 win guy is a #2 at least

And you say Garza may be a #3

Throw Garza in along with Z,Dempster,Wells Cashner,Coleman,Gorzelanny and maybe Marshall.
That's a pretty decent selection of SP.

Can I be in on your Randy Wells bandwagon too? I think he's a lock 3/4 starter for this team. He threw some AMAZING games last year which speaks to the talent he has. Once he learns the ropes, all the hitters etc he will be right there at 13ish wins on a decent team.

too much young talent given up

Hendry, instead of rebuilding, once again went back to his bombastic splashy ways

all it takes is for garza to be injured and this is a horrible deal

15-10 is the guy's best year... not bad, considering he faced the Yankees and Red Sox a combined 10-12 times a year

so not a bad trade overall, considering one was a catcher and 1 was a SS (which we already have homegrown talent at those positions already)

If you have an ERA between 3 and 4 you're winning 10 games on this team. I mean, a full season of starts or what not being the deal.

Garza's started more than 30 games the previous 3 years and has shown no signs of consistent injury. You could also make this statement about any trade in the history of the entire world. We could have traded Sam Fuld for Albert Pujuols and if Pujols gets hurt on his first AB and never plays again it would be a bad trade. Damn, you're dumb.

ERA of 3.91 reads to me as 3.15 in the NL.

This should be one hell of a battle for 3rd place with the Cardinals now.

Oh, well I don't think we gave up that much. Garza is definitely a pitcher of value, so we had to give some up. Thus Archer. Lee is a guy who is a potential very good defensive shortstop, but lots of questions about how his bat will be in the majors. Maybe he'll be something, but no scout considered him a can't miss type prospect. Also, there are a lot of people who believe Junior Lake has a higher ceiling than Lee. Also the SS position is already quite full with Starlin. Chances are one of the three (castro, lee, lake) eventually would need to be moved to 2nd anyways

Plus we didn't have to give up McNutt,Brett Jackson, Carpenter. I also agree with Keyser the more I look at this, the more I like it.

Edit: I know I'm over projecting a bit with Lake, but probably was some of Hendry's thinking

I like the trade but giving up Archer concerns me. But whatever this will make them more competitve and better to watch next year. There is really no team in the Central that scares me as I think the Cardinals are due for a down year and some distractions with the Pujols situation. Additionally I am going on record right now that Garza will have a better year than Grienke

we also got 2 minor-leaguers, probably targeted to be spare parts/reinforcements for injuries

Fernando Perez is the OF. He was on Tampa's top 30 list last year, but nothing more than a 4th/5th OF for this team. He turns 28 this year.

I don't care about Guyer or Fuld at all. I would have liked to have seen what Lee could do at a higher level but the Cubs aren't going to have an opening at SS anytime soon so I'm not bent on him being included. Chirinos has been the flavor of the month recently but I had never heard of him prior to this year and he is kinda old to be a prospect. I don't like Archer being in there though.

We will have to wait a few years to see how this plays out.

What pisses me off is that this seems to confirm that there is not long term plan with this organization and that winning is not in the top two priorities.

Priority #1- Sell tickets
Priority #2- Save our own jobs
Priority #3- Try to win so the first priorities will take care of themselves...if not see priority #4
Priority #4- Retire a number and erect a statue to help with priority #1
Priority #5- If Priority 4 isn't enough bring in an Iron Chef to enhance the concessions menu to satisfy Priority #1
Priority #6- Hope Dusty blows out all his arms to help with priority #3
Priority #7- Host Public League Football playoffs to help offset any deficiencies in Priority #1
Priority #8- Schedule Belushi and Ditka and 20 other meatball favorites for the 7th inning song to help Priority #1
Priority #9- Win the BP Cup
Priority #10- Develop marketing scheme with commercials depicting Quade as Stinger from Top Gun and Mr. Strickland that feature Wood and Dempster as Navy Pilots and Soto as a time traveling slacker....to help with Priority #1
Priority #11- Assemble a team

I think Garza will have a good year but I wouldn't got that far. Unless you have some inside injury info.

I was thinking the other day. What other number do the Cubs have that they can even retire? Billy Willams was retired, right? Who else is left? Dawson? Grace? Sosa will have to wait for about another 50 years I think.

Honestly, it would not surprise me to see #34 retired.
