That's the point. Bill James hates intangibles until he wants to cite intangibles.

Rule #2- If the Boss is wrong, see rule #1.

He really didn't need much more than to compare the 1990 seasons of Bob Welch (Cy Young winner) and Dave Stewart (who was the unquestioned ace of that A's staff). Smoke took on the Ace of the other team, had generally better numbers and was far, far more the feared pitcher. IIRC, Welch had the far better W/L record, but he often got his shit knocked all around (or out in Oakland  ) the park

Another reason why pitching wins cant be trusted over a small sample size.

Even if you believe its pitcher vs pitcher, its not equal. One guy might face Bumgarner 4 times and another guy gets three shots at Edwin Jackson

That's true, but we can look at that.

Bob Welch had a great year in 1990 no matter how you slice it. He was also pretty good in 1977 when he released French Kiss with the hits "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes".

Under Schueler, the Sox were always floating phony stories that they were pursuing these big name free agents like Bob Welch. Of course it was all bullshit. Uncle Jer wouldn't pony up that kind of dough. They got Charlie Hough instead for $800K and he had a better year than Welch!
