I recently purchased a 42" Vizio LED for the bedroom. 1080p. Has a 240 mhz refresh rate. About 5 HDMI inputs as well as all the others. Got it at Walmart for about $700. Originally about $950, it was marked down once and also $100 for being out of box. I'm sure there are better deals online or whatever, but it was a complete impulse by that I'm happy with. All I can say is that freakin' love it and yes, it's great. :P I am now also broke for quite awhile.

I bought the same TV about 4 months ago, and I have no complaints.

Once you hit the 42" range your refresh rate should ideally be above 120hz. With the LEDs especially you also want to make sure the dynamic contrast ratio is at or above 1million. That ratio helps the refresh rate with faster moving pictures (Sports/Video games) and enhances the overall LED look. I personally love the LED tvs at or above 46". With a high refresh rate and D/C ratio over 1million the screen looks about as close to 3D as you can get without putting on glasses. The picture just pops on the LED more than the other two options.

LED means much lower power consumption, and less weight too. and much longer service life. so yes, LED is the way to go. and dont worry about "edge lit" or "backlit" led... the localized backlit LED is the best right now, but edgelit is a lot cheaper and still excellent. most LED tv's are edgelit (the led lights are mounted all around the edge of the screen, and the shine inward to get an even backlight. the local LED backlighting has the lights directly behind the screen, and they can dim independently so you get the best blacks possible wherever its needed.)

i dont think 120hz or 240hz or whatever number they want to put on there really matters. yes, its smoother, but its a simulated picture at that point. anything over 60hz is simulated. i can go either way, if im watching a 120hz tv it seems nice, but if im watching a 60hz tv it seems normal. the one thing i like with 60hz is when youre watching sports you are watching everything in real time. sometimes the 120hz tvs can be so fluid it makes the action seem a little off stride... just an opinion though. doesnt matter with most sports, but with basketball its a big deal because the timing is how you judge how well a guy is playing.

future tvs coming in the next couple years, or sooner, are LaserTV and OLED. laser tvs just shoot a million lasers at you basically. expect an ULTIMATE picture. and ultimate price. there is also SEDtv, which is basically a tube television the size of a pinhead. put a million of those in a grid and you have a cathode-ray television with perfect 1080p resolution. and perfect refresh rates, perfect colors... should rival laser tv's although i have not heard much about SEDtv for awhile, so well see.

OLED is where its at (organic light emitting diode- aka, synthetic lightning bug juice) 3mm thick, a fraction of the power draw compared to LED tv's, and no backlights. these will come on big rolls like carpet does. just hang it up like a projection screen and roll it down and watch. just like a projector setup without the projector. were about 10 years out from that though, its been a struggle to get OLED's to last a good amount of time. theyll figure it out though, lots of companies are hedging on it.

oh yea. fuck 3D tv's. someday (samsung) will come out with a 3D tv that you dont need glasses to watch. until then, dont give these assholes money for stupid shit.

52" tv's are at the sweet spot for price right now. 42" are cheap too if you got a small room. stick with known good brands- vizio, samsung, LG, phillips and the like. even if cheap brand tv's look great, they wont when they break and nobody wants to help you with the RMA.

and need a wall mount? check out monoprice.com. they have what you need for under $50. good quality stuff too, not cheap shit.

What?

do some research. there is no such thing as a true 120hz tv. all tv's grab a 60hz signal no matter where they get it from. to get the 120hz, they take two frames and blend them together. and they do that constantly. so thats why it can look weird, and sometimes especially on cheaper tvs youll notice it just doesnt blend the frames that well.

the only exception is some computer video cards now do output 120hz. but almost none of the 120hz tvs accept a 120hz signal. and even if you have the hardware to do it you still cant get a 120hz signal from the cable company, satellite company or OTA... so its just a bullshit number really.

I'm also in the market for a new flatscreen, but really just to upgrade from the 32" screen we have had for the past few years. I have been seeing quite a few Dads and Grads sales as of late...

 I do find myself calculating electrical use and telling my kids they've wasted $.38 worth of bread when they don't eat the crust...

That's all well and good.

Except 120Hz is more pleasing to the eye than 60Hz, no matter how you cut it. You're the first person I've ever seen complain about sports in 120Hz rather than 60Hz.

im just sayin in 60hz mode you are seeing exactly what is given to you by the broadcasters. i know it looks nice in 120hz simulated modes, i just like seeing what the actual feed is. on some 120hz tvs the motion looks goofy.. im sure the newer ones are more stable though, i havent been up on it lately.

refresh rates dont have anything to do with pixelation

i guess youre right. i knew they adopted a true 60hz 1080p broadcast spec, but its not widely used yet. its been awhile now too

but either way im still not overly impressed with 120hz tvs. not until they accept a 120hz signal on the hdmi port- then i can get a 120hz video card and really be set.
