LED means much lower power consumption, and less weight too. and much longer service life. so yes, LED is the way to go. and dont worry about "edge lit" or "backlit" led... the localized backlit LED is the best right now, but edgelit is a lot cheaper and still excellent. most LED tv's are edgelit (the led lights are mounted all around the edge of the screen, and the shine inward to get an even backlight. the local LED backlighting has the lights directly behind the screen, and they can dim independently so you get the best blacks possible wherever its needed.)
i dont think 120hz or 240hz or whatever number they want to put on there really matters. yes, its smoother, but its a simulated picture at that point. anything over 60hz is simulated. i can go either way, if im watching a 120hz tv it seems nice, but if im watching a 60hz tv it seems normal. the one thing i like with 60hz is when youre watching sports you are watching everything in real time. sometimes the 120hz tvs can be so fluid it makes the action seem a little off stride... just an opinion though. doesnt matter with most sports, but with basketball its a big deal because the timing is how you judge how well a guy is playing.
future tvs coming in the next couple years, or sooner, are LaserTV and OLED. laser tvs just shoot a million lasers at you basically. expect an ULTIMATE picture. and ultimate price. there is also SEDtv, which is basically a tube television the size of a pinhead. put a million of those in a grid and you have a cathode-ray television with perfect 1080p resolution. and perfect refresh rates, perfect colors... should rival laser tv's although i have not heard much about SEDtv for awhile, so well see.
OLED is where its at (organic light emitting diode- aka, synthetic lightning bug juice) 3mm thick, a fraction of the power draw compared to LED tv's, and no backlights. these will come on big rolls like carpet does. just hang it up like a projection screen and roll it down and watch. just like a projector setup without the projector. were about 10 years out from that though, its been a struggle to get OLED's to last a good amount of time. theyll figure it out though, lots of companies are hedging on it.
oh yea. fuck 3D tv's. someday (samsung) will come out with a 3D tv that you dont need glasses to watch. until then, dont give these assholes money for stupid shit.
52" tv's are at the sweet spot for price right now. 42" are cheap too if you got a small room. stick with known good brands- vizio, samsung, LG, phillips and the like. even if cheap brand tv's look great, they wont when they break and nobody wants to help you with the RMA.
and need a wall mount? check out monoprice.com. they have what you need for under $50. good quality stuff too, not cheap shit.
