Yeah, that choice isn't accidental.

For sure, which is why I posted it. An intentional shot.

I wonder about the back story.

What is your guys guess on the political leanings of sports radio listeners?

I guess the location matters, so stick to Chicago.

Im thinking 70% right leaning. Im thinking that number would have been closer to 50/50 10 years ago.

What about people living in the 815?

That's a dumb myth. Some of my favorite most liberal leaning Uncle's are in the 815.

It's not about political leanings but rather why a person tunes into 670. I doubt anyone tunes in to hear the political thoughts of the Score line-up. Even if we were all right leaning, we would have tons of disagreements on specific issues- military interventions, structure of tax cuts, deficit spending, etc, etc. But we would rather debate the Bears free agent signings.

The comments in that piece are dumb. The one guy that works at Marquette Bank, Bob Warja, is really a treasure. You have people all over this board saying for many reasons Goff sucks but his entire reason for commenting is that anyone that says that is an old white racist.

Funny thing is that Feder is quite liberal himself, but I think he's pointing out the 'time and place' thing. But that brought out a firestorm of comments accusing him of being a racist.

What's the old Michael Jordan line, "Republicans buy sneakers too?" Same goes for all the silly products which Bernstein hawks, with the exception of the Cameron Hughes wine. No self-respecting Republican would buy that.

I disagree.

I think the target audience largely leans one way and the hosts were going another.

Im not saying that constant right leaning talk would be good. They definitely over did it no matter what side you're on.

But I think they could get away with the right leaning stuff in spots more than the left stuff.

For example, if theyre stance was that players SHOULD stand for the anthem, I dont think they'd get too much "stop talking politics!" comments. Not as many as taking up Kaepernick's cause anyway.

The country is changing, dman.

B&G would dedicate entire shows, sometimes for days on end, to social issues. Similar to Cable News, they just beat that horse until the next talking point came along. That's a terrible formula for a sports radio show.

You want to touch on something during a segment, great. Then move on...and not back to national NBA talk.

I'd say the younger listener is likely to be liberal and chances are good the NBA is his favorite sport.

Personally, I don't mind some NBA talk, hell I don't mind if Mully wants to talk soccer some. Variety is the spice of life. If I want to listen to national MLB talk, I have a station that does it well. Same goes for NHL, NBA, PGA. I do like a little of all of it on the Score...for the most part though, keep it local.

I'd agree on the NBA but does the younger radio listener exist?

What person under 25 is listening to terrestrial radio?

Yeah, it just has to make sense for the audience. They shouldn't ignore the NBA Finals. And I think they should talk about Daytona, the Indy 500 (in spite of its decline), the Kentucky Derby, the Masters, and Wimbledon. Those are big important traditional events. But I don't want to hear Rozner spend three hours on the Buick Open just because he likes golf. It's like Telander writing about the Dartmouth Women's Swimming Team. Self-indulgent as fuck.

Look, I don't like pro football, but I'm smart enough to know that a Chicago sports show should probably be about 40-50% Bears talk.

Robert Feder update: I just deleted today’s “best comment.” I understand why I should not have highlighted it and I will try to do better next time.
:?

A person of any stripe really has to put in work to make Feder out to be a bad guy.

'Racist' as a word has no actual meaning anymore. Goff is s racist towards white people. People that didn't like Goff are racist. Racist, racist, racist. It's the new 'boy who cried wolf' (not Bruce).

Bunch of intellectually challenged asswipes everywhere a person looks anymore.

Not to mention that somehow along the way 'racist' got conflated (part laziness, part penchant for hyperbolic invective as a part of normal speech) with 'racially insensitive', which is another discussion altogether.

I hate people.

Throwing out accusations like "racist" is just a way to shut up debate and lazily shame an opponent without directly refuting their point.

What a fucking snowflake. So this guy watches Fox News so he can listen to them hammer their bullshit, but god forbid someone expresses a different political opinion than his own on a local radio show. This is what the world is coming to. A complete joke.

Sometimes, yes.

Some times, it's an actual racist getting correctly labeled. Kinda like how if a woman lies about rape, that doesn't mean they all lie.

Exactly. Yet, if they want to extend on golf on the weekend mornings, I'm cool with that. It's sort of a tradition anyway...plus I love golf.

Pretty dumb to choose one that specifically mentioned FoxNews knowing that's a certain segment.

I guarantee there were comments about less politics that didn't indicate political affiliation. Dumb move by R-FED.

I'm not saying that 670 shouldn't try to cater to them a little bit, otherwise if they don't they become SportsGN with a 70-dead demographic talking about the heyday of Johnny Morris and wasn't Bruce Roberts a nice man who died too young. But a proportionate response and allocation of breath is more appropriate.

That's essentially what yesterday's lineup shake-up has done.

Don't underestimate the 70-dead demographic! They're the lifeblood of Fox News, after all.

Yes and no. I agree that DeCastro's m.o. as of late appears to be to grow old with the audience and gracefully manage the decline rather than to shake things up and pursue a younger audience. That's probably the right thing to do with AM radio. But he still seems to be hedging that a bit by having millennials in Parkins and McDoink hosting shows. But overall, I think the station is going to get more conservative (in its programming approach, not right-wing) than it got under Mitch, which I don't think was so much a conscious programming direction as it was just letting the talent roam free-range.

Letting the talent roam free was Mitch's biggest mistake. As others have said, Bernstein needed a producer to step in and end the national NBA talk
