I think Flip is a decent coach and the growth that young players have shown under him is substantial. If you remember correctly the reason that he and Ben Wallace had the falling out because he brought the thought process that the next basket was more important than the next stop or defensive possession. Of the three coaches available (Johnson, Collins, and Saunders) I think Saunders is the best. The Bulls are the laughing stock of the league right now because of how they are handling this coaching situation. I also think that John Paxson is trying to make his eventual exit as GM as easy as possible and maybe thinking about that a little more than he should. If you look at a guy like Doug Collins he would be easily slide into a GM position and the Notre Dame Athletic Director rumors don't make it look any better for him. And you're right we do basketball better than anyone in this city in my opinion.
Damn Goff, I really respect you and Bernstein's basketball acumen, but... Seriously??????? Flip is a terrible coach. He's a career assistant that has lucked into a lot of decent coaching jobs and blown all of them. He's a good X's and O's guy that is terrible at handling players and routinely disrespected. Avery Johnson might even be worse, but thats a whole other story. Im not a big fan of Doug Collins(see: Doug Collins thread in Bulls section), but he's far better than Flip.
1.)Care to elaborate on what substantial growth the young players have shown under Flip? I'll give you Maxiell, but I wouldnt credit to that Flip. Although McDyess played very well this postseason, I would actually argue Maxiell was under-utilized this postseason. How the hell can Theo Ratliff's corpse get playing time in significant situations over this kid?
2.) It took Flip untill Game 4 to realize that Lindsey Hunter could be vital in this series, and that when Rondo was out of the game neither Eddie House nor Cassell could handle a full court press. Even when someone eventually told him this, he still didnt utilize it enough.
3.) Chris Webber said on national TV on TNT when asked what Flip is saying to the team during halftime, and Im paraphrasing here, "Well this is a veteran group that knows what needs to get done, and Im not sure they are really putting much stock into whatever Flip is telling them right now." Wow. This is a guy that was on the team last season.
Bottom line is this guy is routinely outcoached in playoff series, and his players have absolutely no respect for him. I've never heard a ringing endorsement by a former player of his. Also, I dont think he really developed any young players. Sure, he was KG's coach most of his career, but Im not gonna give Flip credit for that given the rest of his resume. If anything, that might be a reason KG is thought of as a playoff choker.
