A Look At Chicago's December 2013 Nielsen Radio Ratings
Published on Thursday, 26 December 2013 15:37
The Nielsen Audio ratings for the Chicago radio market for the "December" period -- which covers the dates of 11/07/13-12/04/13 (almost none of the actual month of December) -- were released on Monday. The following is a study of the local ratings, along with quick looks at some key stories.
In the demographic of Men 25-54, all eyes tend to check out the fierce rivalry between Chicago's two sports talk stations, WSCR-AM/670 The Score and WMVP-AM/ESPN 1000. For the first time in a VERY long time, WMVP-AM was able to close the gap between them, and in some ways and one important daypart, finally beat WSCR-AM.
With WSCR-AM's popular midday host Dan McNeil out on a personal leave of absence since the end of October to deal with his on-again/off-again addiction/depression issues, this left the door open for WMVP-AM to reclaim a lot of its lost listeners. ESPN 1000's Carmen DeFalco and John "Jurko" Jurkovic -- both former on-air partners of McNeil's -- were able to win the midday ratings from WSCR-AM. This was done not only in the Men 25-54 ratings for the December period, but also for the Fall Book (which is an average of the October, November, and December ratings -- the combined numbers often used for attracting sponsors).
For the December period ratings for Men 25-54, the ratings looked like this:
Monday-Sunday, 6:00am-Midnight -- WSCR-AM #6 with a 4.4; WMVP-AM #7 with a 4.1
Weekdays 6:00am-10:00am -- WSCR-AM #3 with a 5.3; WMVP #4 with a 5.0
Weekdays 10:00am-3:00pm -- WMVP-AM #4 with a 4.9; WSCR-AM #7 with a 3.9
Weekdays 3:00pm-7:00pm -- WSCR-AM #2 with a 5.0; WMVP-AM #4 with a 4.7
In the total number of listeners, WMVP-AM has taken the lead over WSCR-AM. In the December ratings period for Men 25-54, it was...
Monday-Sunday, 6:00am-Midnight -- WMVP-AM 305,400; WSCR-AM 265,900
Monday-Sunday Prime Hours (6:00am-7:00pm) -- WMVP-AM 258,900; WSCR-AM 217,800
For the 2013 Fall Book ratings period for Men 25-54, the ratings looked like this:
Monday-Sunday, 6:00am-Midnight -- WSCR-AM #6 with a 4.4; WMVP-AM #7 with a 4.1
Mornings -- WSCR-AM #3 with a 5.5; WMVP #4 with a 4.7
Middays -- WMVP-AM #5 with a 4.3; WSCR-AM #8 with a 3.8
Afternoons -- WSCR-AM #1 with a 5.1; WMVP-AM #8 with a 4.0
In the total number of listeners for the 2013 Fall Book ratings period for Men 25-54, WMVP-AM has also taken the lead over WSCR-AM. The comparison looked like this:
Monday-Sunday, 6:00am-Midnight -- WMVP-AM 284,200; WSCR-AM 256,600
The abrupt disappearance of Dan McNeil certainly hurt WSCR-AM in middays, but WMVP-AM has closed the gap in other dayparts, as well. For the majority of 2013, the rivalry between these two stations was not even close. However, for 2014, the race could become much more close and worthy of attention.
