I think he only does it after his last update of the day, usually 5:30. So it seems to me that its his own kind of sign off.

I know it's a line from "Caddyshack" when Bill Murray is laying in wait to kill the gopher. Maybe George swiped it from there, but I would think it has been around longer than that.

my understanding of the phrase is as a baseball phrase, but after a little digging it seems that it may have origins in WW2 from "Dear John" letters.

Coach. That is an old line. It's been used for years. I don't know where it originated. But I can't beleive you never heard of it. I find it funny that you actually thought there was a women at the Score writing George's copy and that George was literally saying that she was done writing. LOL.

From yahoo.com:

Dear Yahoo!:
How did the phrase "that's all she wrote" originate?
Bob
Independence, Missouri

Dear Bob:
So, we came into the office this morning, turned on the computer, took a sip of coffee, discovered it was too hot, spit it out all over the keyboard, watched the computer melt down, and, well, that's all she wrote.
When we think of a person saying "that's all she wrote," we usually picture someone who's disappointed for some reason. Maybe her computer died, maybe his girlfriend left, maybe she was just informed the tax laws have changed and she can no longer claim pets as dependents. In short, the good old days are gone and aren't likely to return.

The Word Detective believes the phrase may have originated during World War II. Soldiers who received "Dear John" letters from their wives and girlfriends announcing "a blunt end to the relationship" probably used the saying as a kind of punch line to emphasize the coldness with which they'd been dumped.

Ricky Nelson, Conway Twitty, and Reba McEntire have worked the famous phrase into songs about heartbreak. In fact, some believe the phrase really came from ditties about brides left at the altar. However, if that were true, wouldn't it be "that's all he wrote" instead?

In the early years, SCORE brass was obviously attempting to make each of it's personalities more recognizable by using a phrase. They used to print shirts with the phrases on it. George's ended up being thats all she wrote. I'm sure that t shirt was a big seller.

Only if they plastered on the Homosexual Warewolf head shot to go along with the saying.

For a while I thought it's a reference to someone who writes the update copies, but then I learned that the update guys usually write their own copies. The consistency with which George says "That's all she wrote" seems to suggest that there is some story behind it. Anyone with knowledge?

(In my Steve Stone voice)For you youngsters out there, (my voice) I'm pretty sure Gorgy is using the old Jack Brickhouse line as in "oooh boy, that's all she wrote!"
Pretty sure.

Anyone else find Ofman incredibly nauseating? That fake laughter of his is worse than TB's. His attempts to be cute, wry, and slick in his updates are lame, on a good day.

Does he even write his own? I remember when they really screwed a story up in an update that people ran with, he blamed whoever wrote the copy.

I don't like him either. Don't listen to the Score much now so don't hear him, but hated how he always seemed to put in his personal opinoin into every story

Coach, I have one in my closet that you can have. It has been worn exactly once (on top of another shirt) for a four hour Wiseguys program on Steak and BJ Day on 3/20/2003 in Vegas...coincidentally, the first day of the NCAA tourney and the day the U.S. invaded Iraq. What a day that was. Ahem. If you want it, PM me your address.

I don't like him either. He's like a creepy Mean Gene Okerlund. I prefer my updates to come from the dulcet tones of Chris Rrrongey.

Yeah, got me there.

George of Man is ripping off Jim Johnson's act from 890, that of the dorky update guy who makes really stupid/funny errors and malapropisms at least once a week. Maybe this is a common character?

Always been a Jim Johnson fan as an on the air personality. Comes across as totally believeable and genuine. His interplay with Roe makes for a great listen. Be interested to know if it's an act or if thats just "who he is".

Oh, man. I googled "Jim Johnson" just for the heck of it, and I found a Feder column,
Quote:
*Although Mike North flaunts a woeful intolerance for a whole spectrum of racial and ethnic groups, his WSCR-AM (670) bosses appear to have unlimited patience when it comes to tolerating the rantings of their millionaire afternoon star.

Just last week, Rod Zimmerman, vice president and general manager of the Score, read an abject apology on the air for comments North made that offended members of Chicago's Greek community. No disciplinary action was taken against North by the Infinity Broadcasting station.

Zimmerman might want to get another apology ready after North's tirade this week against all Asian-Americans in reaction to the SARS outbreak. It ranked right up there with his notorious "sombrero" slur last year against WBBM-Channel 2's Hispanic news anchor, Antonio Mora.

You can say this for North: At least he's an equal opportunity offender.

WE CAN'T ESCAPE THE IDIOCY OF MIKE NORTH
IT'S EVERYWHERE
